Tiamat was a primeval Sumerian/Babylonian goddess, who appeared as a dragon. She opted not to take sides in the battle between her generation of gods and the next, until her husband Apsu and son Mammu were slain by Marduk. She became consumed with the desire for revenge, and pitted her forces against the god until Marduk destroyed her. She provided Kingu with the Tablet of Destiny before her end.
