Dr. Gaige was a He was a famed oceanographer known for many discoveries in his field. It was his boredom and greed that led him to a life of crime. Donning a striped orange diving costume complete with a helmet and tiger stripes, Gaige adopted a secret identity as the Tiger Shark. Recruiting a dockside gang of criminals to do his bidding, Tiger Shark led his gang of thugs to an undersea headquarters in a sunken ship 200 miles from shore. Tiger Shark became a brilliant criminal mastermind plotting a series of spectacular crime sprees at sea and Gotham City's waterfront. In May 1949, Batman and Robin took an interest in Tiger Shark's crime spree and used the "sub-batmarine" to help them apprehend Tiger Shark. The devices on the sub-batmarine were successful at apprehending Tiger Shark. Ironically, the "sub-batmarine" that Batman and Robin used to captured Tiger Shark had been designed especially for their use by Dr. Gaige himself, much to the surprise of both parties after Tiger Shark was unmasked by Batman and his true identity exposed. Tiger Shark

While attempting to coerce the businesswoman Sonia Zucco into helping launder his money, Tiger Shark first attracted the attention of Batman Dick Grayson. He murdered one of Zucco's closest friends and left her naked corpse stuffed inside a dead killer whale in the lobby of her bank. (Detective Comics v1 #876) Batman later came to discover the criminals undersea lair with Zucco's help. (Detective Comics v1 #877) Tiger Shark suspended Batman over a tank with killer whales in it, and sacrificed one of his own men to wet their appetite. Although Batman was able to break free from his chains, Tiger Shark escaped and blew up the ship to trap him at the bottom of the ocean. Batman escaped anyway because he was Batman. (Detective Comics v1 #878)

Tiger Shark was suspected of helping a Talon gain access to Wayne Tower through the sewers. They fought underground and Tiger Shark sicced an actual tiger on Batman, but he defeated the pirate with Harper Row's assistance. (Batman v2 #12)

He later placed a bounty on fellow super-criminal Killer Croc as Tiger Shark wished to skin Killer Croc so that he could harvest his mutated, meta-human skin as an 'exotic' pelt. During this time, Tiger Shark had also smuggled a snow leopard cub into Gotham to kill for its skin. Shark shot the cub dead in-front of Catwoman who angrily declared that she would skin Tiger Shark for a coat the next time that they met.

  • In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the Dr. Gage Tiger Shark appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "Legends of the Dark Mite!". He, along with the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Mad Hatter, Catwoman, Two-Face, Killer Moth, Kite Man, Mr. Freeze, Catman, Tweedledee, Tweedledum and several other villains appear in Bat-Mite's imagination, chasing the imp. Tiger Shark also appeared in the episode "Mayhem of the Music Meister!" as one of the many supervillains caught under the hypnotic spell of the Music Meister, forced to join the musical villain in song. In addition, Tiger Shark has made a brief appearance in "A Bat Divided!" among several third-rate villains at the "8 Bar", a known haunt for second-stringer rogues in Gotham City. Gaige was seen here passing the time playing billiards with Catman, Cluemaster, and The Spinner. When three atomic counterparts of Batman entered the bar and engaged in a brawl with the criminals, Tiger Shark was seized by one of the Batmen and hurled through the air, crashing headfirst into a wall. Protected by his diving helmet, Tiger Shark rose to his feet to reenter the fight, but was knocked down for the final time after another villain was hurled directly into him.
