Biography

Pre-Crisis

Brin Londo was a male extraterrestrial humanoid who was born the son of the scientist Dr. Mar Londo. His father was Zuun's most dedicated environmentalist and his mother was the naturalist V'Layla Keely. He spent the early part of his life with his mother in the jungles of his native planet, but when she died, he was taken in by his father, and his life took a turn for the worse. (Adventure Comics v1 #327)

A group of criminals hired to target Legionnaire Timber Wolf got his attention by hijacking an armored car using a grav truck. Timer Wolf fought them, and after a rayblast wounded his arm he fought like a cornered animal, overwhelming them. This confrontation drew a number of onlookers, and one of them, claiming to be a doctor, bandaged Wolf’s arm and gave him something to drink that he assured him would make him feel better. Timber Wolf returned to the Legion clubhouse and snapped at his girlfriend Light Lass. He apologized, saying he did not know what came over him, and she chalked it up to Timber Wolf being used to being a loner. Timber Wolf grew more and more agitated, filled with an intense appetite for something, but he did not know what. Wandering throughout Metropolis he was met by the 'doctor' who was actually a drug dealer who told Wolf he had laced his drink with the lotus of Oomar. Timber Wolf wanted to bring him to the authorities, but he found his will had been sapped and he could not resist when the dealer handed him two lotus fruits, telling him to give one to one of his fellow Legionnaires. Lightning Lad visited Light Lass, and she confessed that she’d been distracted by how strangely Timber Wolf had been acting. Lightning Lad was still impressed that she was able to get Timber Wolf to open up to her. Timber Wolf offered Light Lass the lotus fruit and she threw it at him, saying she did not want gifts, she wanted him to stop shutting her out. She shadowed Timber Wolf when he left the clubhouse, and watched him hallucinate and fall into a daze after consuming the lotus. She followed him to an alley where he met his dealer, who gave him a basket of lotus fruit in exchange for the promise that he had get the entire Legion hooked. Light Lass rigged the basket to a blast grenade in her belt, telling Lone Wolf that if he disturbed the fruit he’d be killing her. Lone Wolf fought his addiction and turned on the drug dealer, attacking him. Light Lass said she knew his love for her was stronger than his addiction. (Action Comics v1 #378)

Brainiac 5 discovers that Brin's 'condition' was the eventual result of his father's scientific machinations which has deteriorated Brin to the point of a fatal malignancy. Brin decides to wait out the remainder of his life with a small group of Legion friends that he feels are "family". Gemini magically appears and because of her deep friendship with Brin, tries to cure him, by transporting him back to the time before he was experimented on with Zuunium, but accidentally shifts the two of them back to late 20th century Earth which metamorphosizes Brin into a new different hybrid creature somewhere between his original self and the Furball beast. (Legion of Super-Heroes Annual v4 #3)

Arriving on Zuun, he set up a laboratory and created an army of androids to help him harvest the native Zuunium which was the rarest element in the universe. It existed only in the core of the cavernous world where he intended to use it to make a machine that could give humans superpowers. The androids came to recover some of the mineral in conditions that were inhospitable to humans. Once recovered, he decided to expose his son Brin to a Zuundium ray device that gave him powers. Notes

  • Timber Wolf was created by Edmond Hamilton and John Forte where he made his first appearance in Adventure Comics v1 #327 (December, 1964).
  • In Interlac (1976), Jim Shooter wrote, "Second to Ultra Boy as the Legion's leading fruitcake. He is probably as neurotic as is Ultra Boy, but exclusively about his own identity. He covers his interior uncertainty with coldness and hostility. Fortunately, Light Lass is enough of a romantic to be turned on by this aloof stance. Ultra Boy thinks he knows himself while Wolf knows he doesn't. This alone makes Wolf a more palatable personality, He is the type who will make wisecracks and noise to hide his inward uncertainty. He wants their approval and acceptance. Actually, being a goody-goody Legionnaire is hard for him, because he is more of the James Bond type, just a little visious and nasty even though he's with the good guys. I think Light Lass had to lead him by the hand to bed, but thanks to her, he undoubtedly does well there now."
  • On CBR, Andy Lanning commented, "Timber Wolf is a member of a rival gang [to Ultra Boy]. We haven't yet said where Wolf's 'powers' come from. But he's a noble guy with a strong sense of honor, and maybe sees his link to the Legion as a means of getting out of the criminal underworld he comes from. … Brin's a little rougher and 'nastier' than most Legion members. A loose cannon. They may not approve of his methods."

Alternate Versions

Television

  • In Justice League Unlimited, Timber Wolf made a cameo non-voiced appearance in the animated television series set in the DC Animated Universe in the episode "Far From Home."
  • In the Legion of Super-Heroes, Timber Wolf appeared in the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Shawn Harrison. Brin Londo's father Dr. Mar Londo was conducting experiments in the jungles of the planet Rawl. It was revealed he had experimented on his son until he became a werewolf-like creature. Thanks to Saturn Girl, Brin managed to regain his personality in a form much closer to human. He joined the legion afterwards, but worries that he may not control the animal within him. In "Phantoms", he helps fight off Drax's pets, which annoys Phantom Girl, who doesn't like to be helped. Timber Wolf goes with Phantom Girl in the sewers to search for one of Drax's pets and Phantom Girl tells him that she can handle her own, to which he responds that he wishes she would stop acting like a princess. Timber Wolf has feelings for Phantom Girl. In "Brain Drain", several Legionnaires must travel to a planet called Zuun to collect a rare element (zuunium) that will restore Brainiac 5's failing mind. Timber Wolf says this is his homeworld and is made mission leader. According to Timber Wolf, Zuunium poisoning was noted to cause mutations, although the miners effected were witless, shambling zombies, instead of his own feral form.
