The Tome of Eternal Darkness

Overview

In appearance, the Tome of Eternal Darkness was an ancient, unearthly grimoire bound in flayed human flesh and reinforced with bones from no identifiable species, many of which seemed to pulse faintly as if still alive. The pages within—charred, brittle, yet unnaturally intact—were etched in an unknowable ink, black and iridescent, which shimmered red, green, or blue depending on the source of light and the observer’s mental state. Its cover bore a central sigil that shifted shape subtly under prolonged observation, causing vertigo or unease in those who stared too long. The tome was always cold to the touch, colder than the surrounding air, and seemed to exude a faint whispering sound from within—a sound that no one could agree on, but which was always heard when in close proximity. It bore no known linguistic lineage yet translated itself to the reader's understanding upon contact, suggesting a form of cognitive infiltration that bypassed the need for language entirely. Most disturbingly, its presence was not static; it appeared throughout history in various ages and locations, often discovered by individuals on the brink of trauma, madness, or revelation. Each holder of the tome became ensnared in a cosmic conflict they could neither escape nor comprehend.

The Tome’s function was to chronicle the dark, millennia-spanning battle between humanity and the Ancients—eldritch godlike entities that existed beyond the limits of time and space. The tome served not merely as a record, but as a catalyst, a metaphysical gateway allowing mortals to witness and reenact key moments of resistance against the coming of these Outer Gods. It allowed the user to relive the memories of chosen 'Guardians of Light' throughout history, each chapter binding their lives and deaths into a shared continuity of purpose. When in possession of the tome, the wielder could harness the Mantorok-based magick system, drawing upon three distinct alignments—Chattur’gha (red, power), Ulyaoth (blue, knowledge), and Xel’lotath (green, madness)—with Mantorok (purple, death and decay) functioning as the corrupting balance. Each rune and spell written within was activated through the construction of circular runic diagrams, the power of which directly taxed the user’s sanity, health, and magical reserves. This was not a spellbook in the conventional sense; it was an alchemical puzzle box that fed on the soul of its reader.

Possession of the Tome was never benign. It led its readers to act not of their own volition, but as agents of a larger cosmic necessity. It offered visions, guidance, and power—but also madness, hallucinations, and the loss of time and reality. Many who held it, such as Pious Augustus and Edward Roivas, were drawn into psychological fragmentation, caught between their own thoughts and those whispered by the Ancients. The Tome was sentient in some capacity, choosing its readers across centuries and subtly directing the course of events to resist the full arrival of the Ancient Ones. It demanded sacrifice, resolve, and an unnatural resilience to the unraveling of one’s own perception. In many ways, the Tome of Eternal Darkness was less a book and more an instrument of war—a ledger of flesh, suffering, and doomed resistance against the return of pre-human gods that sought dominion over reality.
