Biography

Origin

Topo

The original Topo was born in or near the undersea continent of Atlantis where he became a favored pet of Aquaman. The creature appears to be gifted with an exceptional intelligence compared to that of an average octopus, and possesses superior dexterity and problem solving skills as well. Topo once demonstrated his skill with a bow and arrow, and was even known to have developed a keen ear for music; supposedly he was able to play several musical instruments simultaneously.

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The name was given to a coleoid humanoid who was a freeborn citizen of Neos. (Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis v1 #50) He was the result of the most extreme breeding programs that Dyss had in operation before those who fled Dyss founded the city of Neos. (Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis v1 #56)

When Mera, Tempest and Cal Durham need to return to Sub Diego, there is a new hero of the sea known as Topo.

He leads the group to hidden hatches that act as portals. Aquaman soon joins the group and Topo offers to lead them on a trip, but they are surprised by Baron Gargos who was at the behest of the Deep Church to kill them. After the fight with Gargos, they finally reach Sub Diego and notice that the city was dominated by Black Manta, who killed the local police and took Alonzo Malrey hostage to lure Orin.

Realizing that it is not the original Aquaman, Black Manta orders his goons to shoot them all, Topo takes position and squirts ink as a distraction so they have a chance to escape.

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Topo was a gigantic fearsome creature that was part octopus and part crab that only Aquaman can summon with a special conch. Aquaman summoned it to deal with the Scavenger, and uses his full telepathic power to unleash the creature on the Scavenger's fleet. However, this version of Topo is found to be too intelligent to be controlled by Aquaman's telepathy; while the creature managed to destroy the enemy submarines, the strain of mentally commanding Topo causes Aquaman to suffer from nosebleeding before passing out of consciousness. (Aquaman v7 #19)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Topo's intelligence and intellect was so strong that Aquaman was unable to reliably control him with his telepathy. (Aquaman v7 #19)

Powers and abilities

Another incarnation of Topo was a giant octopus noted for a long lifespan that Aquaman could summon by blowing a special conch shell. (Aquaman v7 #19)

Notes

  • Topo was created by Ramona Fradon where he made his first appearance in Adventure Comics v1 #229 (October, 1956).

Alternate Versions

  • In Flashpoint Beyond v1 #1 (2022), an alternate version of Topo appeared in the reality of the Flashpoint. He was shown to be a member of the Atlantean army. He and another Atlantean guard were guarding an imprisoned Wonder Woman as Topo rants about how Wonder Woman killed his father, brother, and sister. After Wonder Woman bites off one of Topo's tentacles, Topo and the Atlantean with him are shot by Batman who frees Wonder Woman.

In other media

Television

  • In Young Justice, the Post-Crisis Topo appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "Downtime" where he was voiced by actor James Arnold Taylor. This version had the semi-humanoid form as an Atlantean sorcery student. Prime Minister Topo represented Lemuria at the annual Conference of Delegates. The opening day went little further than introductions, as Xebel had failed to send a representative yet. At the first day of proper talks, Topo brought up the threats of climate change and pollution from the surface. The conference came under attack from Ocean-Master, who easily resisted the gathered delegates and guards, but was forced into retreat by a mysterious stranger, who disappeared as suddenly as he arrived. As public unrest grew, Topo was one of a number of representatives to call in to a Conference of Delegates at the Xebelian palace. As Coral was in labor, she had granted Topo her proxy. It quickly became clear that they intended to elect a new High King, just as Arion and Chian arrived at the palace. Topo, like most of the delegates, voted in favor of Arion taking the throne, and cast the same vote on Coral's behalf. Topo watched Arion's coronation speech, and saw him die shortly after donning Arion's crown. He was part of the unanimous vote to make Mera the new High King.

Films

  • In Aquaman, Topo appeared in the setting of the 2018 live-action film set in the DC Extended Universe. Resembling his original incarnation, he was a small octopus that was providing drum accompaniment during Arthur and Orm's Ring of Fire combat.
