The original Triceraton population, known to themselves as the First Herd, was all but wiped out while serving as soldiers for Emperor Quanin, with the herd's sole survivor being a very young Zog. The Utroms cloned the dead soldiers to create the Second Herd, and as their clone bodies gradually matured in stasis chambers, the Utroms trained Zog to be a soldier and the clones' general. After the first generation of clones had already matured, one of the mature clones, Commander Zom, discovered something about General Zog's birth parents that triggered both Zog and Zom to begin their rebellion. (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe v1 #16)
The First Herd were sent against a force stronger than them leading to their deaths and leaving an infant Zog the only survivor. It was only through cloning that the Triceraton species survived where they were perfected as warriors under him and used to help expand the Utrom empire. (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe v1 #16)
After the Utroms defeat the Triceratons were freed from their servitude but without a homeworld. They continued allying with their wartime allies the Neutrinos on the condition that they would be awarded a homeworld of their own. After the Triceratons helped defend the Neutrinos from Maligna's invasion, King Zenter recognized and officially proclaimed Earth as the one true Triceraton homeworld, and facilitated their return to Earth for resettlement. King Zenter incorrectly assumed that Earth's current inhabitants were better prepared to handle the repatriation of an alien species.

Television
- In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Triceratons appeared in the setting of the 1987 animated television series starting from the episode "Night of the Dark Turtle". They ruled the Triceraton Empire and were able to breath oxygen the same way Earth creatures do. The Triceratons invaded Earth, claiming it as part of their empire and planned to send it through their Star Gate to their homeworlds to strip it clean. Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo fought them only to be defeated since they didn’t have Donatello. However their plan was thwarted, when Donatello was able to convince the Triceratons that he was ruler of the Earth and the animatronic dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum were his minions. He also used Shredder’s powerful Micro Blaster to convince the Triceratons that he and his brothers were far superior to the Triceratons powers and abilities causing them to leave Earth.
- In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Triceratons appeared in the setting of the 2003 animated television series starting from the episode "Fast Forward". For some unexplained reasons, the Triceratons accidentally destroyed their homeworld, forcing them to live on mobile rocks converted into new homeworlds. For likewise unexplained reasons, the Triceratons have been in military conflict with the Federation for quite a long time. The Triceraton Republic was a glorious empire whose warriors were following a strict code of honor and ruled by the senate. But when Prime Leader Zanramon took over and dissolved the senate, the Republic soon began to regress into a dictatorship, with few warriors left to follow the true path of honor.
