Biography
Tsu-Zana
Suzy Sherman was a struggling model in Southern California when her mutant abilities emerged. Unaware of their existence, she was attacked by a Sentinel left over from Magneto's Onslaught and surprised herself and the general public by defeating it herself. An instant media sensation since the West Coast Avengers had left the area, the Hollywood industry hyped her appearance and began endorsing her media-created name, Ultragirl, without her knowledge. Meanwhile, to make the most of her new potential, Suzy called in all of her best friends to help her design a costume. Later, seeking the remains of the Sentinel she had destroyed, she learned she might be part extraterrestrial. She removed all parts of the Sentinel non-vital to its thinking and speech, in order that it could continue to tell her information about her make-up, without posing any sort of threat. (Ultragirl v1 #1) Ultragirl unsuccessfully tried to stop a fire, which had been set by the criminal Effex. While she saved some firemen, she was unable to put out the fire, and ended up getting badly burnt. Fortunately, she soon learned that she was possessed of a superhuman healing power, which quickly returned her normal appearance. She returned to the fire and joined forces with the New Warriors, who had come out to investigate. Effex revealed his involvement and toyed with the young heroes, who were unable to determine which of his threats were real and which were illusion. During a break in the battle, Suzy received an urgent call to meet with her friend Amber. Upon arriving, she was met by a group of Kree (Amber was actually one of them, as well) who had been watching over her. They told her of her true mission, and attempted to convince her to abandon her identity and go into hiding before the Shi'ar learned of her. Suzy was annoyed and astounded by their demands, and since she felt no loyalty to the Kree Empire and considered herself human, she completely ignored their requests. She returned to the struggle, and found that she also possessed an energy tracing ability, which enabled her to identify the true Effex. She took him out, although he blew up his own armor and killed himself in an attempt to go out in a blaze of glory. (Ultragirl v1 #3)
After her powers manifested, Suzy sought to understand her origins and the nature of her transformation. Her search drew her into conflict with both humans and Kree operatives who viewed her as an anomaly or potential weapon. During this period, she encountered Captain Marvel Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers, whose own experiences as Kree-human hybrids offered her a sense of kinship and guidance. Through these interactions, Suzy began to accept her dual heritage and embraced the name Ultragirl. She resolved to use her powers to protect others, balancing her human empathy with the warrior instincts of her Kree ancestry. (Ultragirl v1 #2)
The honor of working with the New Warriors now haunts Ultra Girl, as the Warriors are blamed for an explosion in Stamford which causes the death of hundreds of people, including children. Ultra Girl is one of the New Warriors whose civilian identities are publicly outed on an Anti-New Warriors website. Teaming with the remaining Warriors and She-Hulk, they shut down the website and discover it is run by former Warrior, Hindsight. Ultra-Girl is a member of Captain America's Secret Avengers in the Civil War among superheroes. She is seen among the heroes rescuing Captain America during Tony Stark and Steve Rogers' private meeting attempting to settle their differences. After the end of the war, she decides to comply with the Superhuman Registration Act. Ultra Girl is now part of the Initiative. Sherman is seen on the bus of registered trainees headed for Stamford. Ultra Girl is injured while fighting the forces of HYDRA. She later accompanies Rage, Hardball, Cloud 9, Komodo, Thor Girl, and Slapstick to Manhattan to help in the evacuation procedures; the Hulk was leading the Warbound in an attack on New York. However, they leave their positions and decide to take on the Hulk's forces by themselves. This was in defiance of the orders of Triathlon. This goes badly and the group has to be rescued by their associates, a covert black ops team. Ultra Girl and her friends are punished by having to restart training all over again. She and Justice have start a romantic relationship. After the appearance of the new New Warriors, Ultra Girl was appointed as director of the Junior Guardsmen, a youth branch of the Initiative, akin to the JROTC program.
Ultragirl’s hero career developed further when she joined forces with other young heroes, including members of the New Warriors and later the Initiative, the government-sponsored training program for superhumans. As part of these teams, she proved herself a capable and courageous fighter, often acting as the voice of conscience among her peers. Her optimism and sense of justice contrasted with the more jaded veterans she worked alongside. Although her Kree genetics made her a target for alien factions and government agencies alike, Suzy remained steadfast in her belief that her powers were meant to serve humanity, not divide it. (Avengers: The Initiative v1 #1)
When the other former New Warriors decide to quit the Initiative, Ultra Girl instead returns to Camp Hammond to complete her training. With her Initiative training complete, she and Thor Girl are assigned to Georgia, with Ultra Girl wearing a new costume: Carol Danvers' original Ms. Marvel outfit, given to Suzy by Carol as a graduation present. During the events of Secret Invasion, the Skrull Dum Dum Dugan calls all the sleeper agents in the Initiative, causing Ultra Girl and Thor Girl to fight each other out of fear. When the Skrull Kill Krew arrives to the scene, 3-D Man confirms that Thor Girl is a Skrull. The Skrull Thor Girl is killed with her own hammer. The real Thor Girl is later seen with all the people that had been replaced by the Skrulls. Ultra Girl is ordered to hand over her Ms. Marvel costume, as Norman Osborn has secured the rights to the name and likeness, and is planning to create a new Ms. Marvel. When the deranged Thor clone Ragnarok attacks the Initiative, Justice and Counter Force (now calling themselves "New Warriors") arrive to stop them, and Ultra Girl, wearing her old costume, saves Justice from one of Ragnarok's deadly attacks. When Justice unearths the original MVP's body, wanting to give it a proper burial, Ultra Girl joins him and his team in leaving the Initiative. Ultra Girl is arrested by agents of S.W.O.R.D. as part of a move by Henry Peter Gyrich to evict all aliens from Earth. She is broken out by Abigail Brand and with the rest of the aliens, assists in saving Earth from a murderous fleet. She is sent back to Earth.
Following the events of the Dark Reign, Ultra Girl attempts to gain a spot on the New Avengers by acting as the nanny for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' daughter. She is ultimately passed over in favor of Squirrel Girl, and is shown to be offended when Cage and the other Avengers are unable to remember her name. Ultragirl appears at a meeting held by Prodigy regarding magical hammers that have crashed into the Earth.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Ultragirl was depicted as a young teenage girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and an athletic build reflecting her background as a cheerleader. Her superhero costume was a blue and yellow bodysuit with a bold 'U' insignia on her chest, complemented by a yellow belt and boots. Upon her emergence as a superpowered being, Earth media came to give her the name Ultragirl. (Ultragirl v1 #1)
Ultragirl was optimistic, determined, and earnest. Suzy wanted to use her powers responsibly but also grappled with the pressures of her age, her alien heritage, and her desire to live a normal teenage life. She showed a strong sense of loyalty to her friends and family, as well as a natural inclination toward heroism when faced with threats. While she could be impulsive and sometimes insecure about her identity, her courage and determination consistently pushed her forward into action. (Ultragirl v1 #2)
Ultragirl’s personality was defined by her enthusiasm, determination, and moral clarity. Though she initially struggled with insecurity and the pressures of adolescence, Suzy’s experiences as a superhero fostered a strong sense of responsibility. She possessed a natural leadership instinct and often acted as the emotional center of her teams. Her optimism, occasionally mistaken for naïveté, was rooted in a genuine belief in redemption and the potential for good in others. Despite facing prejudice from both humans and Kree, she maintained a resilient sense of identity and self-worth. (Ultragirl v1 #3)
Powers and abilities
Ultra Girl is superhumanly strong, capable of lifting multiple tons, and is highly resistant to physical injury. She is also superhumanly fast, and can move at velocities approaching the speed of sound, and she heals at an accelerated rate. Ultra Girl can also fly at great speeds. Ultra Girl can alter her vision to see in other wavelengths of energy (besides visible light), such as infrared and ultraviolet. Her powers have vaguely activated in relation to what's been required for the situation, but it is unknown if this is a case of reactive evolution, or simply a process of discovery.
In powers, Ultragirl possessed the natural abilities of a human-Kree hybrid. She had superhuman strength, allowing her to fight Skrull soldiers and even damage starships with her punches. She could fly at high speeds, maneuvering through combat zones in the air. Her body was highly durable, resistant to physical trauma and energy weapon fire, giving her resilience in battle. While she lacked advanced weaponry or energy projection, her physical gifts made her a powerhouse, especially for her young age. These abilities placed her firmly within the class of Marvel’s super-strong, durable, and mobile heroes. (Ultragirl v1 #3)
Ultragirl’s powers stemmed from her Kree physiology, granting her superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and invulnerability far beyond human limits. She was capable of flight and exhibited limited energy resistance, enabling her to endure direct physical assaults and extreme environments. Her Kree heritage also gave her enhanced durability and regenerative capacity, allowing her to recover quickly from injuries. Unlike many Kree hybrids, Suzy’s powers were self-sustaining and did not require exposure to Kree technology or energy sources. In combat, she relied on brute strength and aerial agility, but her growing tactical awareness made her a formidable opponent even against more experienced foes. (Avengers: The Initiative v1 #3)
