Biography

Ultraman Noa (Japanese: ウルトラマンノア, Hepburn: Urutoraman Noa)

Ultraman Nexus first manifested when the Night Raider defense team confronted a monstrous Space Beast that had emerged in a populated area. As the creature rampaged, Nexus appeared suddenly in his Anphans form, a silver-and-blue giant of light standing as humanity’s protector. He immediately engaged the Space Beast in direct combat, utilizing precise physical strikes and energy blasts to drive the creature away from civilian areas. His movements demonstrated both strength and restraint, as he carefully fought to protect innocents while overpowering the enemy with a mix of martial prowess and light-based attacks. In his next appearance, Nexus once again came to humanity’s defense when another Space Beast appeared, this time pushing the Night Raiders and their advanced weaponry to their limits. Transforming swiftly, Nexus intercepted the creature in close combat, countering its brutal charges with his agility and raw strength. As the battle escalated, he unleashed the Optical Ray Schtrom, a powerful beam attack that obliterated the Space Beast in a decisive display of energy projection. However, Nexus’ battle left destruction in its wake, revealing both the immense power of the giant and the collateral danger his fights posed to the world around him. As the threat of the Space Beasts intensified, Nexus continued to intervene in escalating confrontations. In one early battle, he demonstrated a wider array of his powers, including his capacity to generate protective energy barriers and to channel light-based energy into devastating melee strikes. His actions underscored his role as the only being capable of facing down the Space Beasts on equal terms, yet his fleeting appearances and mysterious silence left humanity uncertain about his true nature and intentions. Despite the devastation of the battles, Nexus’ consistent defense against the Beasts established him as the enigmatic guardian standing between Earth and annihilation.

Himeya later encountered Dark Faust, a female Giant of Darkness in league with the Beasts, who proved herself as a formidable opponent due to her mastery of the Dark Field. In their final battle, Faust revealed herself to be inhabiting the body of Komon's girlfriend, Riko Saida, who had actually died six months prior. Within the Dark Field, Komon's words were able to reach Faust and she stopped fighting, but then died at the hands of Nosferu to protect him. Following their battles against Faust and Lafleya, Nexus and Himeya were acknowledged as allies to the TLT. However, soon after, Dark Mephisto emerged as Nexus' second adversary. Mephisto tried to manipulate Komon's depression to pull him into the dark side, but he was able to move on from his past, allowing the TLT and Ultraman to finally destroy the regenerating Nosferu. Not long after, Himeya's connection to Nexus was exposed and he was abducted by the TLT in hopes of studying the Ultra's power. After being tortured, Jun managed to escape and was treated by his old colleague Megumi Sakuta, but the injuries he sustained left him severely weakened, such that the Illustrator stated another transformation would likely lead to his death.

Time would prove his words to be true as his injuries took a toll on Nexus during his fight with Kutuura while also trying to save Sakuta from Mephisto's grasp. Nexus was ultimately defeated and crucified in the Land of the Dead, as Kutuura's tentacles slowly drained his light. During this, Himeya met Sera's spirit, who helped him realize the true purpose of the light he had been entrusted with, and thus allowed Nexus to be revived via a reserved energy source. Initially in a weakened state, the Night Raiders fired their last supply of Ultimate Vanisher, providing Nexus with enough energy for a counterattack to finally defeat Mephisto for good. Although both giants seemingly perished in the resulting explosion, Himeya appeared to Komon one last time, telling him that the light shall be passed to someone else.

Noa's power was passed on to Ren Senjyu, a 17-year-old genetically-engineered human with ESP abilities. However, due to his his flawed creation, he had a limited lifespan, being calculated to die at the age of 18. Having escaped the facility where he was raised, Ren wished to spend his last days in Japan surrounded with smiles and laughter. After his first battle as Nexus, like his predecessor, he befriended Komon, as well as Mizuo Nonomiya, a woman from the Memory Police. While fighting under Nexus' mantle, Ren could achieve Junis Blue, a speed-oriented form.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Ultraman Nexus was a towering, humanoid giant clad in sleek, bio-mechanical armor that fused silver plating with organic, light-imbued blue sections across his chest and limbs. His head bore the iconic Ultraman design of luminous compound eyes, a smooth crest, and a glowing blue forehead crystal known as the Beam Lamp. His Anphans form in particular was characterized by a simpler, elegant design with a blue chest pattern and streamlined armor, exuding both strength and otherworldly grace. His entire body radiated an aura of light, underscoring his origin as a warrior of luminous energy.

In terms of personality, Nexus was portrayed not through spoken dialogue but through his actions and presence in battle. He demonstrated unwavering determination to protect humanity, repeatedly placing himself between the Space Beasts and innocent lives. His fighting style revealed a sense of discipline and restraint, as he countered the Beasts with precision and decisiveness rather than reckless destruction. His silence and mysterious appearances lent him an enigmatic quality, but his actions consistently aligned with the role of a guardian who valued life and fought with purpose.

One of the most defining aspects of Ultraman Nexus's character was his profound sense of burden and duty, which heavily influenced his actions through his various human hosts, or 'Dunamists'. In his primary form as Jun Himeya, Nexus operated with a heavy heart, viewing his role not as a heroic gift, but as a form of atonement for his past failures as a war photographer who could not save an orphan named Sera. This deep-seated survivor's guilt meant he fought with a grim, often self-sacrificial resolve, pushing his body to its limits and sustaining serious injuries that didn't easily heal. He was driven by an inherent desire to protect others and see justice done, but this was constantly tested by the brutal reality of the clandestine war against the Space Beasts and a skeptical defense team, the Night Raiders. This sense of a heavy, often unappreciated, duty defined his actions during this period, as he battled relentlessly to save lives, even when it came at a significant personal cost to himself and his human form.

Powers and abilities

Physiologically, Ultraman Nexus was a giant of light whose body was composed of bio-energy and armored tissue capable of withstanding extreme force and energy attacks. His physiology granted him immense strength, superhuman speed, and the ability to withstand physical and energy-based assaults that would obliterate conventional weaponry. Nexus possessed enhanced senses, allowing him to track the energy signatures of Space Beasts, and his body could generate and manipulate photonic energy for both offensive and defensive purposes. His primary abilities included devastating energy blasts, melee-enhancing energy flows, regenerative resilience, and protective shielding, all of which placed him beyond the capacity of human understanding.

The Dunamists (適能者デュナミスト, Dyunamisuto, lit. chosen people) were beings who can bond with the light to become Ultraman Nexus. Each new bond provided Nexus with additional strength, as evidenced from his constant evolution throughout the series.
