Van Daam Family

The Van Daam family are a Human family that feature in the movie Hemoglobin.

Background

Originally, the Van Daam family were a wealthy group present in Europe during the early years when the continent of America was discovered. They were considered a deviant group that frequently engaged in incest between brothers and sisters eventually leading to the birth of children that were inbred. Resulting problems would develop in the future such as deadly blood disease within future children that could be slowed down by drinking the blood of other Humans. Also, a noted problem would be the eyes of future children which would be of different colour from one another. As the family moved to America, they would continue their inbreeding until they were distorted completely from the Human norm.

The years of inbreeding have had a dramatic effect on the family resulting in them becoming a short dwarf-like species with extremely short legs but strong arms which they use to move themselves about. They have developed distorted features across their face making them appear almost completely inhuman. They have developed an existence as a subterranean culture and live entirely underground. They made frequent use of sharp instruments to kill their prey and usually suspended bodies upside down within their underground homes. When forced to hunt for Humans, they would typically attack from underground passages and burst from below or cause the floor to collapse in order for their targets to fall down into the caverns below.

There internal anatomy has also greatly diverged from the Human norm; they have become fully functioning hermadophites allowing them to reproduce without assistance though they do find sexual intercourse enjoyable. They also possess three stomachs within their bodies and developed a taste for blood. Infact, their entire food source involves the race raiding corpses within the cemetary which they do so by burrowing underground and stealing the corpses which they begin to eat. However, when a lack of food is available, the race engages in active hunts against Humans, who are unaware of the existence of this divergent breed.

Though a majority of the species born end up as mutated dwarf-like creatures, on occassion a more Human child is born from the family. Such children are rare and can sometimes lead to the more mutated Van Daam members to actually kill these children. However, its also common for twins to be born and that the brother and sister. This can be seen in the case of John Strauss.
