Biography

Original Timeline

Voldo (Japanese: ヴォルド, Hepburn: Vorudo)

It was shown that he served as the right-hand man of an Italian weapons merchant named Vercci who was known as the 'Merchant of Death' due to his business with the Spanish armada. In that time, his master had desired the fearsome blade Soul Edge which he wanted for his collection of rare weapons. Thus, Voldo came to stand at the head of many of the expeditions in search of the legendary weapon. This even saw them contracting the services of the feared Spanish Captain Cervantes de Leon for his goal. Voldo even accompanied Vercci when he decided to conduct a personal search for the Soul Edge but these failed to find the sword. Afterwards, the Italian Wars bad broke out in Italy with Vercci's possession's becoming a notable prize for many. In anger, Vercci came to move his fleet that was his only remaining possession to an uninhabited island located off the coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean. One there, he had a 50 meter deep shaft made that would serve as his tomb and a vault for his treasures. After construction was complete, Vercci had Voldo slay the sailors that helped in building the site in order to prevent word of its existence from spreading out and he was instructed to shut himself inside with his dead master.

Voldo's search of Soul Edge ended in failure, and he returned to the Money Pit to find it flooded by a storm. After saving what he could, Voldo remained inside for the 3 year span later to reemerge from the pit following a woman with the essence of Soul Edge, Ivy, who tried to find leads on the sword for herself. Voldo returned to the Money Pit after taking Yoshimitsu's katana, mistaking it for Soul Edge due to its evil aura, only to find years later an intruder with Soul Edge fragments. Voldo realized the katana was not Soul Edge and set out on a new search, collecting fragments while seeking it. During one of his periodic visits to the Pit, found the tomb ransacked and the sword he mistook for Soul Edge stolen alongside the fragments he collected in his travels. Since the thieves were apparently interested in Soul Edge, he decided to track them down and force them to reveal any information of the sword they know. He also came to realize he was someday going to die and leave the pit unprotected, so he also started to search a worthy successor. Later on, Voldo does find Soul Edge with Nightmare at Ostrheinsburg. As he picked up the sword, he heard Soul Edge's voice, in disguise of his master's, telling him that he has done well in finding Soul Edge and that now he must offer his soul. However, the true voice of Voldo's master spoke to him, warning Voldo of the Evil Sword's trickery. Voldo took Soul Edge into his guardianship, protecting the sword from those that sought it, but in turn also protecting humanity from its malevolence by preventing it from ever being wielded. Soul Edge's illusion of Vercci was shattered from Voldo's mind by a purifying blow from Kilik's Kali-Yuga. He returned to Vercci's Money Pit with the intention to become its guardian once again, only to find it had been ransacked by thieves in his absence. Voldo spent the next several years murdering the ones responsible and retrieving every piece of treasure stolen. Even after the collection was complete, Voldo continued to search, this time for the object his master had always desired and he had been so close to acquiring: Soul Edge. In 1607, Voldo serves under Graf Dumas, and battles Patroklos when he attempts to kill Dumas. Later, after Patroklos reunites with his sister, Pyrrha, they are ambushed by Voldo. Patroklos is wounded by him, and Pyrrha is forced to take up arms and fight him.

New Timeline

The Money Pit was an expansive, deep hole in the middle of an island in the ocean. It was created as a place to horde the magnificent treasures collected by Vercci, a weapons dealer. Naturally, such fortune attracted the attention of more than a handful of thieves, but the Money Pit was not without the protection. In addition to numerous traps, it was guarded by a character wielding strange weapons: Vercci’s former right-hand man, Voldo. Having lived in the pit since the death of his master, he had lost his eyesight, but still continued to deal out cruel punishments to any who dared to attempt to steal his master’s valuables. Voldo left the Money Pit for a short period to search for his master's most desired treasure: Soul Edge, the ultimate weapon. During that time, a great storm flooded part of the pit, causing extensive damage, and many of its traps were destroyed. Voldo did his best to make repairs, but invaders attacked before he could finish. One of these marauders was a woman wielding a strange weapon—Ivy—whom Voldo just about succeeded in holding at bay. She did, however, manage to escape with one of Vercci's most prized items: his notes. Prioritizing their return, Voldo left the pit once more. But that wasn't the only reason for his departure: Ivy emitted the same aura as Soul Edge. Perhaps she knew its whereabouts. Doggedly he pursued her, until eventually they met. While he was able to retrieve Vercci’s notes, he found out that Soul Edge had been destroyed. On his return to the Money Pit, he reported to his master, whose words of appreciation made the loyal Voldo proud and even momentarily joyful. The bond between him and his master was unbreakable.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Voldo was a male human pale skin and bald head from the original timeline, with his eyes and mouth completely covered for his blindnesss and muteness.

Powers and abilities

After spending years and years in the dark depths of the Money Pit, Voldo lost his eyesight, but acquired excellent hearing and a heightened awareness that easily make up for his loss. His eccentric fighting style perhaps developed in response to the unusual environment of the vault, and consists of bizarre, unpredictable moves that make use of his height and flexibility. Despite the strangeness of his many thrusts and slashes, every attack Voldo makes is deadly and designed to kill. Countless robbers have foolishly entered the Money Pit, unaware that a terrifying being lurks within who is able to survive among the deadly traps dotting the vault.

For fights, Voldo came to wield a pair of Jamadhar Katars for close quarter fighting. The bizarre style uses unique arm blades known as jamadhars to perform highly unpredictable moves. Designed to be used in dark places, it allows a fighter to strike even with their back turned to an opponent. The wide variety of unusual attacks used by this style require an incredibly flexible body to unleash; however, mastering them enables precise strikes that can cut an opponent down wherever they stand. Notably, the bizarre and twisted stance, Mantis Crawl, allows for different moves depending on the the direction the fighter is facing. The average warrior will find themselves unable to defend against an endless array of disturning attacks and will quickly fall to the Mantis Crawl's shredding blades.

Voldo is easily recognizable by his strange and unique style of play. His moveset is based on contorting his body in unnatural ways, making him an extremely unpredictable fighter. He also has many stances that compliment his odd style, like his Mantis Crawl in which he stands on his four limbs face-first. Also unique to Voldo is his ability to fight with his back towards his opponent. He uses a different set of attacks in this mode, though he returns to face-forward mode to execute grabs. Due to the nature of his weapons, Voldo has one of the shortest range in the game, which is considered a major flaw. Also, due to his lack of eyesight, Voldo will sometimes miss the opponent if they are quicker than him. Despite these difficulties, he is generally considered as a high tier character by the tournament community.
