Biography

Pearl as a hero in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas v1 #1.

Pearl Pangan was a female human born on Earth in the modern age. She grew up by the beach on Mactan Island in Cebu, Philippines. She displayed a strong affinity for water at an early age, becoming a swimmer full of promise and Olympic potential; however, obstacles in life turned her aside from that path. While working at a fast-food chain, Pearl was approached by a representative of the company AlonTech who had learned of her from her high school's swim team records. AlonTech used Pearl's swimming expertise for experiments, but unbeknownst to Pearl, they were a nefarious organization that was eventually targeted by the Triumph Division. During the Division's assault on AlonTech Lab, Pearl was drenched in water and exposed to energies of unknown origin, granting her the ability to control water. Pearl tried to hold off the attackers, but was taken out, eventually learning where AlonTech really stood. The group of heroes took Pearl in and helped her figure out how to use her new powers, becoming a superhero known as Wave. (Aero v1 #1)

Pearl Pangan debuted when the Queen of Cinders’ forces attacked Asia during the War of the Realms. Equipped with her hydrokinesis and a pair of enchanted wave blades, Wave battled alongside Aero, the Chinese superheroine, against fiery invaders threatening her homeland. She demonstrated skillful teamwork with Aero, combining water manipulation with Aero’s wind powers to extinguish flames and repel enemies. Her courage earned her recognition as one of Asia’s defenders during the global crisis. (War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas v1 #1)

Wave and Aero looked to defend the Sirenas from Alontech who dispatched their hybrids against the resistance force. During this time, the leader of Alontech arrived who as the Reyna Sirenas where it was discovered that the founder of the company was the Queen of the Mermaids. She managed to capture Sea Hunter and forced the two heroes to stand down leading to their capture. It was then discovered that the Sirenas were often attacked by the Atlanteans and in desperation the mermaid queen created Alontech with the goal of finding a means of improving themselves. In that time, Sea Hunter was found and the mermaid queen's lover Carina fell in love with the human. This caused a fracture among the Sirenas with Alontech hunting down the renegades. It was also discovered that Pearl was a product of experiments by Alontech in giving the Sirenas a great power with the mermaid queen looking to recover it from the unconscious Pangan. (Aero v1 #3)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Wave in Atlantis Attacks v1 #4.

In appearance, Wave was a female human usually depicted in a sleek black-and-gold wetsuit-like costume that emphasizes her aquatic origins. The outfit was streamlined for combat and swimming, and she wielded a pair of glowing, water-infused blades that serve as both melee and channeling weapons for her hydrokinesis. Her long dark hair often flowed freely. (War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas v1 #1)

Wave was a strong-willed, independent, and sometimes defiant toward authority figures. Coming from humble beginnings in Cebu, she carries herself with pride in her Filipino heritage and displays a fierce protectiveness toward her people. While she sometimes struggles with feelings of isolation, especially when operating outside her home country, her determination to defend others remains constant. (Agents of Atlas v3 #1)

Powers and abilities

Wave possessed hydrokinesis, the ability to generate, control, and shape water at will. She could form powerful tidal blasts, create protective barriers, and combine her powers with Aero’s aerokinesis for devastating elemental attacks. Her enchanted wave blades amplify and focus her powers, functioning as both weapons and conduits for her abilities. In addition to raw elemental strength, Wave was also an agile fighter and an experienced swimmer, giving her versatility on both land and in aquatic environments. (Atlantis Attacks v1 #1)

Notes

  • Wave was created by Greg Pak and Leinil Yu where she made her first appearance in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas v1 #1 (July, 2019).
  • In an interview on Spin.ph, Pak commented, "We're keeping some things secret for now so we can reveal them in the books, but Wave's civilian name is Pearl Pangan, and she's a Filipina from Cebu. She has water-based powers and a special costume designed by Leinil with retractable fins and other features to be revealed. Leinil also had the inspiration to give her those awesome swords reminiscent of Filipino kampilan. I think there's some speculation out there that since she's got these water-based powers, she might be part Atlantean. But I like the idea that she grew up as a regular girl without any kind of special, royal, or magic bloodline that gives her powers. Later down the line, we'll reveal more about her abilities and how she got them, but for now I'll say she grew up by the sea and has always felt as comfortable in the water as on land."
