History
Yharnam
In the earliest records of the Yharnam region, it was inhabited by the people of Pthumeru. The early Pthumerians lived in primitive societies as the creators, tenders, and guardians to the tombs of the gods. As time passed, the Pthumerians coalesced into a more complex civilization, headed by a usually female monarch based in the capital of Pthumeru Ihyll. It was at this stage that a group of Pthumerians called the Keepers defiled the bodies of the Great Ones under their care to obtain holy blood. It was believed that the source of this blood was Oedon. Experimentation with the blood yielded the process of communion, creating the first hunters. These individuals wanted to use the blood of the gods to achieve godhood for themselves. Other by-products of their work included the Keepers' Hounds, the Watchdogs of the Old Lords, and the Maneater Boars, who were all products of feeding the Great Ones blood to animals. Only one of the Keepers ever succeeded in the order's aims. This woman, after her ascension, was known only as Paleblood to even the greatest eldritch scholars. However Gehrman's doll, which had been brought to life by Paleblood and lived in her dream, would occasionally pray to her in trance under the name Flora. Flora was able to become a Great One of the nightmare, not a mere abandoned Great One as the people of Isz would later accomplish. But though she was powerful and intelligent, Flora was not wise and had not lined her brain with eyes before ascension. She was thus unable to share her enlightenment and raise all the Pthumerians into the dream world. The Keepers' experiments were regarded as sinful to the Great Ones and dangerous to the Pthumerians. The Caryll rune for 'hunter' was on a hanging body that had been left to bleed out.
After the Keepers of the Old Labyrinth concluded their early rituals and the Byrgenwerth scholars unearthed the Old Blood from the subterranean tombs, they witnessed the rapid, feverish ascent of Yharnam into a sanctuary of blood ministration. Following the schism led by Laurence, the Healing Church established itself as their new governing power, building a vertical city of jagged Gothic spires and sprawling cathedrals upon the ruins of the ancient Pthumerian knowledge. They grew addicted to the miraculous properties of the blood, which cured their ailments and fueled a period of immense medical and architectural expansion, yet this prosperity carried the seed of their ruin as the Ashen Blood plague began to take hold. In response to the encroaching darkness, the Church formed the Healing Church Hunters and the Workshop, turning their once-proud streets into a site of perpetual, bloody purges as they succumbed to the Beast Plague. Their history became a cycle of 'Hunts' that grew increasingly desperate, eventually leading to the total collapse of their civil society and the transformation of their populace into the very monsters they sought to eradicate under the silent, watchful gaze of the Great Ones.
