Biography

Origin

Yolanda Maria Dorothea Lucia Montez was the daughter of Maria Montez and was born in the modern age. Her mother and her sister both came to be patients of the insane Dr. Benjamin Love. The siblings were given experimental drugs by the mad gynecologist whilst they were pregnant. Doctor Love kept close tabs on most of his experiments, but lost track of the sisters when they travel to Mexico. In Mexico, Maria's daughter Yolanda was born on the same day her sister gives birth to Carcharo where both offspring were mutated as a result of the experiments. Yolanda and her mother returned to America to be reunited with her husband Juan "Mauler" Montez. As a child, Yolanda came to manifest her superhuman powers, but was unaware of why she was born a metahuman. (Infinity Inc. v1 #26)

She came to a reporter for Rock Stars Magazine where she came to attend the press conference that was being held with Infinity, Inc. who were taking questions. (Infinity Inc. v1 #12)

At first, Ted Grant was annoyed with this new superheroine, but when he discovered she was his god-daughter he gave Yolanda his blessing to be the new Wildcat. (Infinity Inc. v1 #25)

She was then fished out of the water by Carcharo who to take her away on his submersible ship after telling her that Infinity Inc. believed her to be dead with there being no hope of rescue. Yolanda though ended up slashing at his face leaving a scar whilst she escaped into the waters. However, she was quickly pursued by Carcharo who rendered her unconscious underwater and captured her where she was brought back to his ship. Once she awoke, she was told that there was no chance of escape for her as he took her to a remote island where she came was introduced to Carcharo's compatriots in Helix that included Mister Bones, Tao Jones, Penny Dreadful, Kritter, Arak and Babe. They revealed their ties to her where Yolanda came to learn that she had been an experiment of Dr. Love just like them. (Infinity Inc. v1 #26)

As the second Wildcat, she joined Infinity Inc. and fought alongside them. (Infinity Inc. v1 #31)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Yolanda Montez

At some point, Yolanda Montez took up the mantle of the Wildcat and became associated with the Justice Society of America. Later on, she died alongside Elizabeth Chapel, also known as Doctor Mid-Nite. The pair were buried in the jungles of Parador, in South America. (Justice Society of America v4 #3) Yolanda Montez was later erased from the timeline when Doctor Manhattan prevented Alan Scott from becoming the Green Lantern and, as a consequence, his death prevented the creation of the Justice Society of America. (Doomsday Clock v1 #10) Later, Doctor Manhattan undid his manipulations of the timeline and allowed Alan Scott to become once again the Green Lantern and form the Justice Society. Restored to history and resurrected as part of what would later be recognized as a precursor quake to the Lazarus eruption. Wildcat was with the Justice Society of America when they fight Angle Man and an army of inter-dimensional Bizarros until Angle Man was defeated by a Huntress from an alternate future. After Green Lantern's ring confirms Huntress' story and her encounter with Per Degaton, Wildcat suggests that they call Ted Grant. The JSA was then confronted by Per Degaton. (Justice Society of America v4 #3) She fought alongside the JSA side by side with her predecessor, Ted Grant, helping Superman defeat the metahumans who were ravaging Washington, D.C.. Yolanda Montez was the result of experiments conducted by Dr. Love who used drugs to mutate her whilst she was in her mother's womb. This resulted in her gaining powers as a result though she appeared human. (Infinity Inc. v1 #26)

Notes

  • The Yolanda Montez Wildcat was created by Roy Thomas, Dannette Thomas and Don Newton where she made her first appearance in Infinity Inc. v1 #12 (March, 1985).

Alternate Versions

  • In Earth 2 v1 #10 (2013), an alternate version of Yolanda Montez appeared in the Multiverse in the world designated as Earth-2. Yolanda and her cousin Alejandro were both born minutes apart where they came to be close friends from childhood. Her cousin was chosen to be the Avatar of the Red but Yolanda volunteered to take his place thus giving her the ability to connect with all forms of animal life in the world. She was then transformed into the champion of the Red whilst Alejandro was made to forget her. She was subsequently sent to the Tower of Fate, where she became its Great Beast until a time when she would be needed. In her time as that beast, she fought with the second batch of the Wonders of the World upon them entering the Tower. She united with the other Avatars of the Parliament of Earth to face off against the New Gods, demonstrating an ability to shapeshift. Later, she is captured by the evil New God Desaad and transformed into an enormous, ferocious shapeshifting red monster loyal to Darkseid.

Television

  • In Stargirl, Yolanda Montez appeared in the setting of the live-action television series where she was portrayed by actress Yvette Monreal. This version is a formerly popular girl, a fan of Ted Grant, and the ex-girlfriend of Henry King Jr. Three months prior to the series, she became an outcast when her rival Cindy Burman leaked a risqué photo she had sent to Henry during a school presidential election to ruin her candidacy, which also soured her relationship with her Catholic parents and led to her pouring her frustrations into boxing. Montez later takes up Grant's former costumed identity of Wildcat, at the request of Stargirl, to help rebuild the Justice Society. After forgiving Henry before he was killed by his father Brainwave, Montez would later avenge him by killing the latter.
