Although Yondu initially planned to plunder the vessel and kill the intruder, he was caught off-guard when the resourceful human orphan managed to temporarily outsmart and trap the pirate crew. Recognizing a mirroring reflection of his own harsh, homeless upbringing in the boy's survival instincts, Yondu spared the child's life and offered him a permanent position on his crew as a basic janitor boy. This fateful encounter established an enduring, highly volatile relationship between the hardened crime lord and the future Star-Lord, shaping the trajectory of the Ravagers' criminal operations.
