History

The Zahard Empire was established during the early Age of Genesis, following the arrival of Zahard and his companions into the Tower. Unlike the native residents who lived on the inner floors, Zahard and his entourage originated from the Outside—a world beyond the Tower’s entry floor and were the first known group to climb the Tower’s inner floors as unified explorers. With unmatched strength, cunning, and ambition, Zahard conquered floor after floor, striking contracts with the Guardians of each level and solidifying his growing influence. Eventually, Zahard ceased his climb at the 134th Floor, declaring it the summit of his domain. There, he established the Zahard Empire, appointing the Ten Great Families whose leaders had accompanied him on the expedition where they came to be the noble backbone of his regime. These Families governed each floor in his name, their bloodlines gifted with extraordinary strength and privileges. The Tower’s hierarchy was shaped by this act, and the Zahard Empire became the ruling force across the Inner Tower, wielding both political and magical control over its inhabitants.

Though initially hailed as a hero and god-king, Zahard soon transformed his empire into a rigid totalitarian system. Fearful of ascending further or inviting new contenders into the Tower, he sealed the Tower’s entrance, preventing any new Irregulars from entering and threatening his authority. Zahard himself fell into a deep slumber, entrusting the daily management of the empire to his military officials, royal aides, and the Ten Great Families. The Empire maintained strict control over commerce, information, and the lives of all inhabitants on each floor. Climbing the Tower became a regulated endeavor, requiring approval from Zahard’s Administration. Those deemed threats such as native tribes, rebellious Rankers, or Irregulars were crushed swiftly by the Empire's forces. This bureaucratic tyranny ensured an era of political stagnation. Though the Tower remained stable, its society became a pyramid of power, with the royal family and nobles at the top, and the vast majority of the populace locked into systems of servitude and compliance. Zahard’s image endured as a divine monarch, untouchable and eternal, while resistance to the regime slowly brewed in the shadows.
