Biography

Zato-1 (Japanese: ザトー=ONE?, Hepburn: Zato Wan) was a male human whose parents were lost to the Crusades where the orphaned child was taken in by the Assassin's Guild in 2166. As a member, he had witnessed the guild's swift expansion and deviation where he came to see Slayer's resignation as leader two years later. In the aftermath, the assassin organization suffered from decay due to a lack of leadership. By 2173, Zato came to be disgusted with his own powerlessness and risked death by invoking the forbidden arts. The Post-War Administration Bureau offered him a Forbidden Beast with this being a parasitic organism derived from Gear technology. He lost his eyesight, but with his newfound powers, he became the guild's leader within weeks. In that same year, Millia Rage and Venom were taken in by the guild. To them, Zato was their savior and teacher where he came to earn Venom's undying loyalty whilst Zato eventually fell in love with Millia. These two subordinates became Zato's right and left hands, respectively. As leader, Zato had the guild turn to money contracts but attempted to turn it into a place where those with nowhere else to turn after the war could take shelter. However, the Guild had become too massive to manage making change difficult to accomplish.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Powers and abilities

His primary weapon was the parasitic entity named Eddie (エディ, Edi) that was a shadow-being created using Gear technology. Eddie was one of the Forbidden Beasts (禁獣?, Kinjū) where he was bound to his human host by the 5th Forbidden Magic Spell (卑・泥獄墜法第5法, Hi-Deigokutsuihō Daigo-hō?). Due to its seal of protection, he had to give up his sight. However, he gained in its stead enhanced senses[ that was enough for him to perceive his surroundings better than he ever could with sight alone.

Through Eddie, Zato-1 had complete control over his own shadow, and is able to shape it into a variety of different forms, ranging from simple swords to monstrous beasts. Able to deflect bullets and magic with his shadows, he can also meld with darkness for a number of uses, including his own brand of teleportation.

He was the leader of the Assassin's Guild until his demise.
