At an unknown point, she became a protégé of the man called [[Bill (Kill Bill)|Bill]], and joined his [[Deadly Viper Assassination Squad]] becoming one of the world's most ruthless assassins, and specializing in knife-fighting. She earned herself the codename: '''Copperhead'''. In [[1999]], Vernita and the rest of the DiVAS on Bill's orders attacked the wedding party in El Paso, Texas, of one of their former comrades; [[Beatrix Kiddo|Beatrix Kiddo]], wiping out the entire party, while Bill shot Beatrix in the head, putting her in a coma. Shortly after the wedding massacre, Vernita retired from the DiVAS, married a [[Bell, Dr.|Dr. Bell]], and with him had a daughter named [[Bell, Nikki|Nikki]]. But four years later, Beatrix (now known as the Bride) awoke from her coma and began a revenge mission against the DiVAS. Vernita was her second target. The Bride attacked Vernita in her suburban home in Pasadena, California but were interrupted when Nikki came home from school.
