Captain Campion was the captain of the Efrafan Owsla and a loyal supporter of General Woundwort.

Watership Down

After Woundwort's apparent death, Campion took over as Chief Rabbit of Efrafa.

Watership Down (Film)

Largely identical to the version in the novel, although he is portrayed as being much more ruthless, and there is no mention of him taking over Efrafa following Woundwort's death.

Watership Down (Series)

Unlike his cruel and sadistic second-in-command, Captain Vervain, Campion was a very fair individual and treated the "inferior" rabbits of Efrafa fairly. Despite his loyalty to Woundwort, he could see that the fascist system which governed Efrafa was beginning to destroy the warren.

When he was unable to persuade his Chief of this, Campion opted to secretly help out the Watershippers in their campaign against Woundwort, during which time he fell in love with Blackberry. However, when Woundwort was nearly killed during a cave-in while the Efrafans and Watershippers were scuffling in the caverns beneath Efrafa, Campion risked his life to save Woundwort.

Everyone thought he was dead, but he survived, albeit badly scarred, with some help from the Black Rabbit of Inle. With the help of Pipkin, he recovered and rejoined Woundwort at Darkhaven (something which Woundwort allowed because Campion had saved his life.

Campion's real reason for sticking with Woundwort was so that he could continue to thwart the evil Chief Rabbit, and he got his chance when he helped Blackberry smuggle Woundwort's seer Silverweed out of Darkhaven and turn him over to the Watershippers. After that, he eventually left Woundwort's side altogether and joined Blackberry at Watership Down, and he participated in the final battle between Woundwort and the Watershippers.
