Dr. Lawrence Phillips was an English oncologist and head of Phillips Laboratory, world famous for his research of cancer. Described as very reclusive and willing to go to any lengths to avoid interruption in his work, Dr. Phillips set up shop in an old mansion on the remote Petrie's Island, where he worked in conjunction with similar laboratories in Rome, New York and Tokyo. Although brilliant, Phillips got too impatient and careless with his experiments to grow living cells to combat cancer, and his rush to finish ahead of schedule resulted in both the creation of the fierce silicates and Phillips' death, when he and his three assistants were killed in the mansion by their own creations.
