Dr. Elias Thorne was a professor of temporal physics who invented a process known as TimeScan, which would allow human beings to view the past. He was aided in his research by his wife, Dr. Helen Thorne. During an experiment aboard the Prometheus which would allow Thorne and his fellow scientists, as well as a cadre of UN delegates, to view the Mesozoic Era, Thorne discovered his process had been hijacked by the Supreme Monstrosity, an ancient, evil being. The Supreme Monstrosity attacked Prometheus, killing three security officers before turning the TimeScan against the Earth, causing prehistoric monsters to behin phasing into existence to terrorize the planet in the hopes of displacing mankind so that dinosaurs could once more rule the rule. Thorne referred to this event as a time "tilt."
Dr. Thorne and his colleagues worked 'round the clock to solve the problem. After forty days, he fell asleep at his desk. As he slept, he was visited in his dream by a reptilian alien which referred to itself as a "Saurian." The Saurian explained to him the machinations of the Supreme Monstrosity. After awakening, Thorne quickly began attempting to reverse the time "tilt," aided by Helen. However, the Supreme Monstrosity, intent on stopping him, reached through the TimeScan viewer, dragging the scientist into his hellish realm.
His blood boiled and his skin blistered and smoked. Yelling for Helen to complete the computations to reverse the time "tilt," Thorne succumbed to agonizing death in the clutches of the Supreme Monstrosity. Aboard the Prometheus, Helen successfully reverse the "tilt," then evacuated aboard a shuttle before the station was destroyed an overload of the nuclear furnace. As he died, Thorne witnessed the destruction of all the invading dinosaurs as they were literally ripped back through time, seeing that his sacrifice was not in vain.
Comments
- In the comic adaptation by Eclipse (later IDW), Thorne is referred to as Professor Thorne as opposed to Doctor Thorne (although this isn't too much of a change, considering Thorne is a professor of physics and can be addressed as such).
- He is also given a subplot in which he initially doubts the Supreme Monstrosity's existence, as he and others (including Helen) worry that the entity is a manifestation of Thorne's dark side, as a result of the recent death of his brother Jordan. Helen almost shoots him after everyone else aboard the Prometheus dies of a mass heart attack (in reality this was the Supreme Monstrosity's doing). However, after seeing the Supreme Monstrosity on the TimeScan viewer, the Thornes realize the evil entity is real.
- As he dies in the grip of the Supreme Monstrosity, Thorne witnesses the spirit of Jordan calling to him from the afterlife, suggesting a much happier ending than burning forever alongside the Supreme Monstrosity.
