The U-33 was a World War I German U-boat commanded by Captain von Schoenvorts, which took Bowen Tyler and the survivors of a sunken British ship to the lost continent of Caprona. It sank in boiling hot water caused by a volcanic eruption and exploded when Dietz tried to submerge and escape.
