Mallard Glover

Mallard Glover was a wildfowler who lived in Sutton. He was known as something of a recluse and had an antagonistic relationship with Manton Haywood. When the locals, egged on by Tom Southgate, blamed Professor Lowson's expedition for the appearance of the Slime Beast and attempted to attack them, throwing him, his niece Liz Beck and assistant curator Gavin Royle into the quicksands of the Wash to die, Glover came to their rescue, using his shotgun to drive the angry mob away. However, his intentions were not entirely altruistic. When Lowson and Gavin went into town for supplies the following day, Glover stayed with Liz, ostensibly to protect her, but instead he attempted to rape her. He was stopped by the Slime Beast, who attacked the pair. Liz escaped, but Glover was killed by the monster, which ate his brain. Upon returning to Sutton many years later and encountering a second Slime Beast, Gavin and Liz remember Glover as one of the original monster's many victims.
