History

The Brethren attack Earth in Avengers v1 #337.

The Brethren were a race of beings that were originally created by the Celestials. The Celestials typically used their genetic knowledge to transform primitive pre-human bipeds into the Eternals. Normally, the Celestials foresaw a need for a control group in their experiments in order to serve as a balance. To accomplish this, they took the bacilli, the spirilla, the cocci, and other bacteria and germs from the planet Omega Climion Six which were used to form the Brethren. In this capacity, the Brethren served the Celestials where they awaited each planet's judgment from Arishem the Judge. Upon a negative judgment from Arishem, the Brethren would sweep onto the unfit planet and destroy everything on it. The Celestials eventually lost interest in the Brethren and let them loose onto the cosmos. (Avengers v1 #339) Knowledge of their origins would be forgotten and the leader of the Brethren took the name of Thane who alongside their brother were the only ones aware of their creation. They were pressed by the urge to destroy life and move on where they spread terror as well as genocide across the universe. (Avengers v1 #337) No race had survived the onslaught of the Brethren. (Avengers v1 #335) In time, their existence became legendary as they were noted as being a terror among the stars. (Avengers v1 #336) Their actions were noted to had been witnessed by Uatu of the Watchers who saw them commit unparalleled acts of destruction across the cosmos. (Avengers v1 #334) It was alleged that the Brethren had caused the fall of thousand worlds and races. (Avengers v1 #336) Their rampage across the cosmos was said to had come to an end around 5,000 years ago. (Avengers v1 #334) Spreading destruction throughout the universe, the Brethren came to be found by the Collector who added them to his collection. (Avengers v1 #339) For many decades, he kept the Brethren trapped where they were reduced in size. (Avengers v1 #335)

Overview

For eons, the Brethren engaged in the practice of killing the weak and meaningless. Their ruthless nature meant that in their entire history they had never taken prisoners and defeated foes were killed by the victor which was deemed their right. In battle, these aliens fought exceedingly well and seemingly thrived in tougher battles. This was partly as a result of their group mentality which aided them in combat. (Avengers v1 #335)

It was said that they had an urge to conquer. (Avengers v1 #336) This saw them seek out and destroy other forms of life. (Avengers v1 #337)

Their holy text was forbidden to members of other races. (Avengers v1 #337)

They could marry and breed only amongst themselves. (Avengers v1 #334)

The Brethren also abandoned their elders when they are not fit enough anymore to follow, with such treatment being considered an honorable death. (Avengers v1 #338)
