Biography

Origin

Kakashi Hatake.

Kakashi Hatake (Japanese: はたけ カカシ, Hepburn: Hatake Kakashi) was a male human born as the son of Sakumo Hatake where he grew up in Konohagakure in the Ninja World. It was noted that his mother had died when Kakashi was very young leaving the boy to be raised by his father. Sakumo was a famed warrior in the shinobi world who had saved Konoha on at least one occasion with Kakashi revering his father. Kakashi was later enrolled Konoha's Ninja Academy during on of his father's missions when Sakumo made he decision to save the lives of his teammates rather than complete the assignment. The mission's failure had disastrous consequences for the Land of Fire leading to many in Konoha including the teammates he saved to shun Sakumo. After being disgraced, Sakumo came to commit suicide with Kakashi vowing to not to make the mistakes his father had made in his life. Thus, he dedicated himself to the Shinobi Rules that were to take priority over any other concern. He came to earn top grades at the Academy where he earned recognition for being a prodigy and the best of his generation. In time, he came to be popular amongst his peers where his talents saw him at 5 years old graduating from the Academy at the top of his class in a single year. Reaching the rank of genin, he was joined his classmates Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha where the three of them went under the leadership of their sensei Minato Namikaze.

Afterwards, he keep the reach the rank of jonin when he was 12 years old with this being celebrated by his sensei and Rin who got him a gift. Obito though was late for their gathering leading to the typical argument between him and Kakashi. At the time, the lands were engulfed in the Third Shinobi World War with Team Minato being assigned the task of destroying the Kannabi Bridge in Kusagakure in order to cut off the supply line from Iwagakure. Shortly after entering Kusa, they encountered an Iwa-scout with Kakashi attempting to eliminate them with his newly developed jutsu that was he Chidori. Though powerful, Kakashi's lack of control of it made him vulnerable to a counterattack and he was nearly killed by an enemy ninja thus forcing Minato to intervene to save his student. Minato then advised Kakashi to not use the Chidori again as it had not been mastered yet whereupon he had to depart to the frontlines thus leaving Hatake in charge of the team to continue their mission. They continued their mission but Rin Nohara was captured by the enemy but Kakashi was willing to abandon her in favour of the mission. However, Obito refused to abandon his comrade and went on his own to save Rin with Kakashi eventually joining him. They found the enemy ninja's hideout and during the fight Kakashi suffered a blade cut across his left eye which was destroyed in the process. During this time, Obito's Sharingan opened thus improving his fighting skill where they succeeded in freeing Rin but the enemy ninja triggered a cave collapse on top of the three Konohagakure ninja. Obito came to save Kakashi from falling rocks but was crushed by one of the falling debris which destroyed the right side of his body. Slowly dying, he asked Kakashi to save Rin and gave a gift to Hatake which was his left Sharingan with the transplant being made by Nohara's medical ninjutsu. Prior to being buried alive by rocks, Obito made Kakashi promise him to protect Rin and told them to run to safety. With the Sharingan's power, Kakashi killed the enemy ninja but the pair were overwhelmed by reinforcements from the other side. Kakashi then bade Rin to escape whilst he fought the enemy off where he lost consciousness but awoke sometime later to find him and Rin had been saved by their sensei Minato who had rushed back and dealt with the enemy ninja.

On a later mission, Rin came to be kidnapped by shinobi from Kirigakure with Kakashi taking part in the mission to rescue her. He succeeded and started to take her back to Konoha but Rin revealed that the Three-Tails was sealed into her body with the intention that she lose control of it and unintentionally release the Tailed-Beast on the hidden leaf. To prevent this, Rin begged Kakashi to kill her where he refused to do so as he was unwilling to break his promise to Obito with him looking to find another solution. However, Kirigakure nin caught up with them where they made a false effort to recover her with Hatake fighting them off using his Chidori. During one such attack, Rin jumped into the path of his lightning blade causing her to be fatally injured thus fulfilling her wish to die so that Konoha would survive. The trauma of killing Rin caused Kakashi's Sharingan to evolve into a Mangekyō Sharingan where he passed out from the strain. When Hatake awoke, he found all the Kiri shinobi having been killed at the hands of an unknown party. The death of his two teammates, his own role in Rin's death and his failure in fulfilling Obito's last request led to Kakashi falling into a deep depression. In this time, his sensei Minato Namikaze came to be appointed the Fourth Hokage where he wanted to help Kakashi emerge out of the darkness and thought to assign him into the ranks of the Anbu. He performed well in this role where he reached the rank of captain and became the leader of a team. In this time, he demonstrated a coldness and ruthlessness in combat whilst avoiding his comrades leading to him falling deeper into the darkness. This led to Minato trying a different approach where he assigned Kakashi to watch over and protect his wife Kushina Uzumaki when she was pregnant. Hatake performed his duty faithfully where in his time off he would visit the graves of Rin and Obito.

During the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack, Kakashi and many of Konoha's other young ninja were prevented from helping defend the village, instead being confined within a barrier to keep them safe. Minato eventually saved the village from the Nine-Tails, but at the cost of his and Kushina's lives. After which, Danzō Shimura approached a grieving young Kakashi, noting that it was Hiruzen Sarutobi's orders for the children, even high-ranking ninja like Kakashi, to not help battle the Nine-Tails, ultimately preventing Kakashi from possibly saving Minato and Kushina. Convincing an emotional Kakashi that the Third was not best for the future of the village, Kakashi agreed to join Danzō's Root division and spy on the Hokage for him. During a mission, Kakashi encountered another Root member codenamed Kinoe who was able to use Wood Release. Knowing that Wood Release was unique to the First Hokage, Kakashi broke in to the Hokage Residence to see what he could learn about this anomaly. The Third caught him, but freely gave him the information he wanted: Konoha had tried to recreate the Wood Release powers in the past, but abandoned the project for killing too many test subjects. The Third then mused that the Nine-Tails might have been defeated and Minato saved had the research been successful. From this meeting with the Third, it became clear to Kakashi that the Third was not the ineffectual, passionless leader Danzō had made him out to be. Moreover, Danzō had not used Kinoe to try and stop the Nine-Tails' attack. Realising he had picked the wrong side, Kakashi told the Third about Danzō's plans to assassinate him and, the following day, personally lured out the assassins, of whom Kinoe was one. Kakashi easily defeated him, but chose to spare his life in the belief that he would become a valuable ally in the future. Kakashi attempted to resign from the Anbu afterwards for working against the Hokage, but the Third insisted his service was invaluable and made Kakashi his right-hand man.

Naruto

Kakashi came to be assigned as the leader of Team 7 that was comprised of Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. The Third Hokage explained that Hatake was selected for the team in order to keep an eye on Naruto, the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki. During his first meeting with Team 7, Kakashi came to be unimpressed by them as he found them all to be too self-interested. He nevertheless gave them a bell test as he had done so for all the previous teams he had been assigned to and told them to take one of the two bells on his person. Naruto launched a first attack before the test officially began with Kakashi stops him easily but was nevertheless amused. Kakashi reads Icha Icha Paradise during the test, convinced he won't need his full attention or both of his hands. Naruto and his shadow clones fail to take a bell and Sakura, who focuses on looking for Sasuke, is defeated by one of Kakashi's genjutsu. Kakashi then goes to find Sasuke, expecting the same outcome as Naruto and Sakura, but finds Sasuke was waiting for him. Kakashi is forced to go on the defence and, when Sasuke uses the Great Fireball Technique, he must close his copy of Icha Icha, but he still manages to defeat Sasuke. Kakashi gathers them together afterwards and tells them they've failed, explaining that, had they worked together rather than individually, they might have succeeded in acquiring a bell. They convince him to give them another chance after lunch, but Kakashi demands that Naruto not be fed. He secretly watches them as they eat and sees Sasuke and Sakura give Naruto food against his instructions, needing Naruto in top form if they're to get a bell. Kakashi pretends anger when he approaches them, but tells them that they pass the test for placing the team's well-being above the mission parameters. Team 7 completed a number of D-rank missions, which Naruto themselves to be over-qualified for these assignments. He complained to the Third Hokage about this and was able to secure a C-rank mission which was to escort Tazuna to the Land of Waves. Shortly after leaving Konoha, Kakashi notices they're being pursued by the Demon Brothers. He pretends to be killed by one of the Demon Brothers' attacks so that he can observe them, stepping in to neutralise them once Team 7 could not hold them off anymore. After restraining them, he learnt from the bridge builder that the businessman Gatō had been targeted him as he wanted to prevent Tazuna from completing his work. This bridge being created would have led to a drop in Gatō's profits by connecting the Land of Waves to the mainland. As a result, he came to hire a band of rogue ninja from Kirigakure to eliminate him with Kakashi looking to protect his charge. It was then that he learnt that their foe was none other than the rogue ninja Zabuza Momochi. Recognising how formidable Zabuza was, Kakashi uncovered his Sharingan and engages him, leaving his students in charge of protecting Tazuna. Kakashi initially does well against Zabuza, defeating Zabuza's water clones with his own. When Zabuza succeeds in trapping him in a Water Prison, Kakashi instructs Team 7 to leave him behind and escape with Tazuna. Naruto ignores him and with help from Sasuke is able to release him. Kakashi thanks them and resumes his fight with Zabuza, copying his ninjutsu and using them against him. Just as he is about to finish off Zabuza, Zabuza is seemingly killed by a young hunter-nin and his body is taken away. Team 7 continues on to Tazuna's home, but Kakashi must be carried, having exhausted himself due to overuse of the Sharingan.

Following the fight, he collapsed and was taken to the nearby village of their charge where he recovered from his injuries. He then recalled the events of Zabuza's seeming demise and concluded that the Hidden Mist ninja was actually still alive. Kakashi determined this from the fact that the weapons used by the tracker ninja were actually not lethal and that normally such shinobi destroyed their quarry's body rather than take it away. These facts led to him determining that the tracker ninja was actually Zabuza's ally and had moved in to save him from being killed in their fight. While recuperating, Kakashi starts to find Zabuza's death suspicious and worries he may still be alive. In case this is true, he shows Team 7 the Tree Climbing Practice in order to improve their chakra control, which will be useful if Zabuza does indeed return. After a week of rest Kakashi has recovered and all of Team 7 has mastered the exercise; Naruto is tired from the training and is allowed to keep sleeping as they resume their bodyguarding of Tazuna. When they arrive at the bridge Tazuna is working on, they find Zabuza and Haku waiting for them. Haku traps Sasuke in his Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals, which Zabuza blocks Kakashi from helping him escape from. Once Naruto arrives to lend Sasuke assistance, Kakashi engages Zabuza in combat. Having learned from his previous encounter, Zabuza coats the area in a thick mist so that Kakashi can't use his Sharingan. Because of this, Kakashi sticks close to Tazuna, knowing Zabuza will come for him eventually. Zabuza does indeed attack, and Kakashi is badly injured by Zabuza's Kubikiribōchō while defending Tazuna. While reeling from his wound, Kakashi senses Naruto using the Nine-Tails' chakra. Fearing that the seal containing the beast is weakening, Kakashi decides to finish the battle quickly: he summons his ninken and has them track down his blood which is still on Zabuza's Kubikiribōchō. Once they locate him, they pin him down while Kakashi attacks with his Lightning Cutter. Just before he hits Zabuza, Haku steps in front of him and takes the attack instead. As his last act, Haku grabs Kakashi so he can't get away, allowing Zabuza, freed from the ninken, to try to slice through him in order to get to Kakashi. Kakashi pulls away, sets down Haku's body, and, angered by what's happened, proceeds to debilitate both of Zabuza's arms. Gatō then arrives to kill them all, Zabuza included, with a horde of mercenaries. Zabuza kills Gatō first and Kakashi scares off the horde with his 'Multiple Shadow Clone Technique'. Zabuza, dying from his injuries, asks Kakashi to place him next to Haku. Kakashi complies and, after he passes, buries them both. Their mission complete, Team 7 returns to Konoha, travelling by way of the Great Naruto Bridge that Tazuna finished building.

Team 7 resumes its series of uninteresting missions, but Kakashi is nevertheless pleased by their development. He then attended a meeting called by the Hokage alongside the other squad captains to discuss whether their respective students were ready to take part in the Chūnin Exams. Kakashi stated that his students were ready to attend the exam despite the objections of Iruka Umino. He neglected to tell his students that they must enter as a team as he did not want any of them, especially Sakura, to feel pressured to participate. He was therefore glad when they all independently decide to take the exams and wishes them luck.

Taking Sasuke to an isolated spot, he looked to train the Uchiha personally and increase his speed to the point that he could master the chidori technique. This was because he felt that Sasuke was like him and thus able to master the ability. During their training, they were approached by Gaara though the sand ninja did not attack as he was keen for his eventual match against Sasuke. The length of training took sometime leading to the pair being late for Sasuke's match which nearly left him disqualified.

He remained in the hospital until Tsunade was brought to the village to be the new Hokage. Once there, she used her medical ninja techniques to repair the damage to Kakashi's body thus restoring him to full power.

Two years later, Naruto returned to the village after completing his training under master Jiraiya. Upon meeting the Fourth Hokage, Lady Tsunade wanted a demonstration to see his progress where she decided that Naruto and Sakura were to fight as a team against their former sensei Kakashi. This was part of a test where the objective was for them to get the bells on his body where they showed considerable skill compared to the last time they had undergone this trial against him. Ultimately, they were able to succeed in their task and he came to note the considerable progress the pair had made under their respective mentors in the last two years. Tsunade then decided to form a new squad called Team Kakashi that would consist of Hatake, Naruto and Sakura where the three would operate as peers.

The exhausted Kakashi was then taken back to the hidden leaf village by Might Guy where he was taken to the medical ward for recovery.

Whilst making his recovery, he learnt that Team Kakashi headed by Captain Yamato had been sent to return Sasuke to the village but failed in their assignment. In addition, they learnt that Sasuke had improved greatly whilst under Orochimaru's training and that he far surpassed Naruto. Thus, it was decided that Uzumaki would have to go through an intense training regimen in order to lessen the gap between the two with Kakashi responsible for this matter. After some thought, he found a possible means of reducing years of training in harnessing different chakra natures into a short span of time through the use of Shadow Clones. The idea was for Naruto to create many clones all undergoing the same training with the belief that their knowledge would pass to Naruto once they dispersed which would reduce the training time as a result. The training regime was given to Naruto but Kakashi was dispatched on an assignment by the Hokage to join Jiraiya in order to watch the activities of the Akatsuki.

He was in the village when it came under a surprise attack from the Akatsuki leader Pain who seemingly operated from six bodies each of whom possessed a powerful jutsu. Kakashi came to find himself in a battle against the Asura Path that could generate projectiles from their body but he was later joined by the Deva Path. Despite Kakashi's skill, he was unable to match the sheer power of Pain though had managed several fatal attacks. This allowed for Chōza Akimichi and Chōji Akimichi to arrive at the scene to provide support where they managed to badly damage the Asura Path. They later tried to ambush the Asura Path with Kakashi intending to use his chidori to deal a fatal blow but it was easily dissipated by Pain. This saw Hatake being trapped in debris seemingly leaving him an easy target with Pain sending a spiked needle into Kakashi seemingly killing him. The Asura Path departed the scene whereupon Kakashi revealed that he had faked his death as he used a kamui teleportation jutsu to send the spiked needle to another dimension just before it could his head. He then witnessed Choji Akimichi mourning the seeming death of his father from the last attack by Pain but Hatake told him o take what iformation they knew about their foe to the Fifth Hokage. It was then shown that the Asura Path was still functional and looked to eliminate Choji before he could deliver his message by sending a projectile after Akimichi who could not outrun it. This forced Kakashi to use his last strength on a kamui technique to remove the projectile in mid-flight thus saving Choji but the strain of the move caused Hatake to die as a result. As he died, he seemingly found himself in the afterlife where he came to find his father and sat down with him by a fire place as the two talked to one another. Though dead, Kakashi came to be resurrected when Pain was inspired following his confrontation with Naruto leading to him using the Rinne rebirth jutsu thus restoring all the dead in Konohagakure at the cost of his own life. Hatake was present to take the exhausted Naruto back to the hidden leaf where the Uzumaki youth was hailed a hero by the village with Kakashi being proud of his student.

At the onset of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Allied Shinobi Forces came to divide their forces as they prepared for their battle against the Akatsuki. Kakashi came to head the forward commando unit where they were sent to confront the enemy only to find that the Akatsuki had used the reanimation jutsu to revive the dead to fight for them. This necessitated the use of sealing techniques in order to deal with the reanimated shinobi whilst the bulk of their forces battles a massive army of White Zetsu.

Next Generations

After the Osutsuki attack on the village, the chunin guards came under attack seemingly from Mitsuki. This led to the former Hokage Kakashi and Tsunade meeting in a closed meeting with Naruto along with the village elders. It was there that Uzumaki revealed that Mitsuki was the son of Orochimaru with this being a closely guarded secret. Tsunade was furious at Naruto hiding this information but Kakashi believed that their duty as former Hokage was not to question Uzumaki's decisions but rather to advise him.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Kakashi Hatake was a male human with spiky silver hair that was parted to his left side where he had dark grey eyes and typically a relaxed, lazy expression. During the Third Shinobi World War, his left eye was damaged with this leaving a vertical scar from the injury and shortly afterwards it came to be replaced with a Sharingan that he hid by covering it with his forehead protector when he was not using it. It was remarked that he greatly resembled his father to the point that he was sometimes mistaken for him. His talent for copying techniques led to him being known as Copy Ninja Kakashi (コピー忍者のカカシ, Kopī Ninja no Kakashi). Due to possessing a Sharingan, he came to be known as Kakashi of the Sharingan (写輪眼のカカシ, Sharingan no Kakashi, Literally meaning: Kakashi of the Copy Wheel Eye). The fearsome reputation he developed led to him being known as Cold-Blooded Kakashi (冷血カカシ, Reiketsu Kakashi) with some calling him the Friend-Killer Kakashi (仲間殺しのカカシ, Nakamagoroshi no Kakashi).

When he was younger, he was shaped by the death of his father to the point that he held the Shinobi Rules above everything else. At the time, he felt that those ninja that disregarded the rules were scum. This saw him not acknowledge acts of friendship and even consider abandoning allies all for the sake of completing the mission. Kakashi in these years felt that it was better to not exist than to be useless as he felt that there was no place in the world for useless things.

His views began to change during the Third Shinobi World War during his interaction with Obito. It was his fight for Rin and seeming death that led to him valuing friendship.

By adulthood, he was shown to have a relaxed attitude where he often seemed to be bored.

In battle, he tended to rely on his Body Replacement Technique and clone techniques in order to keep himself out of harm's way whilst he observed his foes and their abilities.

His father was Sakumo Hatake (はたけサクモ, Hatake Sakumo) who was a renowned jonin known across across the shinobi world who came to be known as Konoha's White Fang (木ノ葉の白い牙, Konoha no Shiroi Kiba, English TV: White Fang of the Leaf, literally meaning: Tree Leaf's White Fang).

Might Guy came to be a friend of Kakashi who considered themselves rivals with them attempting to one up the other.

In his youth, he had a turbulent working relationship with his teammate Obito Uchiha (うちはオビト, Uchiha Obito). This came from a mutual dislike the two had with one another where they constantly sniped at each other. However, this changed during their final mission together that saw the death of Obito with the event changing Kakashi's views. He came to greatly value Obito and continued his ideals after his seeming death.

Another person who was close friends with Kakashi was his fellow team mate Rin Nohara (のはらリン, Nohara Rin) who had often served as a peacemaker between Kakashi and Obito. It was her death at Kakashi's hands that caused Kakashi to fall into a deep depression and falling into darkness.

Might Guy had considered Kakashi his rival ever since they first met in the Academy. Despite his father's warning that Guy might someday prove stronger than him, Kakashi didn't think much of Guy at the time. Guy took this as a challenge and began striving to earn Kakashi's approval so as to show that his perseverance could be just as good as Kakashi's natural genius. When Guy would suggest contests to test how their abilities compared, Kakashi would respond with indifference, only fuelling Guy's desire to defeat his 'cool, hip, and trendy' personality. Prior to Naruto leaving the village to train, Kakashi's score was 50 wins and 49 losses.

Powers and abilities

Kakashi Hatake was born a human male who had the natural ability to manipulate chakra allowing him to perform a number of techniques and jutsu. A natural prodigy, he demonstrated a high level of skill from a young age. It was shown that he had attained high grades at the Academy and was regarded as a prodigy for his generation. Despite this, he had stated that he did not have the large reserves of chakra like Naruto and had to build it up for use in certain jutsu. The likes of Naruto Uzumaki were said to possess four times the chakra reserves when compared to Kakashi.

At his prime, he was a wielder of Dōjutsu (瞳術, English TV: Visual Jutsu, literally meaning: Eye Techniques) when he received the Sharingan (写輪眼, literally meaning: Copy Wheel Eye, meaning (Viz): Mirror Wheel Eye) from Obito Uchiha during the Third Shinobi War which replaced his lost left eye. With it, he was able to heighten the visual information he was able to see and accurately analyse any jutsu performed before him. Its true strength though lay in it allowing him reproduce another jutsu so long as his own physical skills were able to permit reproducing the feat. In addition, it allowed Kakashi to perform a wide range of genjutsu on another person. Initially, overuse of his power came to exhaust him after extended usage of his abilities. He later came to evolve it into the Mangekyō Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, literally meaning: Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye) that was even more powerful which occurred when he accidentally killed Rin. It afforded him greater abilities but this initially required large sums of chakra for its use. The experience was known to drain him greatly and leave him exhausted as a result. He eventually came to learnt to use it to perform teleportation jutsu where he could pull himself into another dimension though he could only do this for a limited number of times.

Among his techniques included:

  • Body Replacement Technique (変わり身の術, Kawarimi no Jutsu) : the substitution jutsu involved switching his body with an inanimate object such as a wooden log. Thus, any lethal attack against him saw him performing the body replacement that switched him with the inanimate object which bore the brunt of the damage.
  • Earth Release: Double Suicide Decapitation Technique (土遁・心中斬首の術, Doton: Shinjū Zanshu no Jutsu) : an earth-style technique whereby he lurked underground in order to grab a target and drag them into the earth leaving only their head exposed to the surface. The move trapped its victims leaving them unable to move in this state making them vulnerable to any further attack or interrogation.
  • Chidori (Lightning Release: Chidori (雷遁・千鳥, Raiton: Chidori, Lightning Release: One Thousand Birds) : a technique developed by Kakashi after he failed in attempting to master the Rasengan. It was said to be his only jutsu which he did not steal from another person. The Chidori involved gathering a large amount of chakra as lightning around the finger tips that made the sound of birds chirping and became visible to others. It was noted to be the ultimate technique that could be used in an assassination and was capable of almost piercing anything.
  • Lightning Cutter (雷切, Raikiri) : a Chidori developed by Kakashi and named after he used it to cut lightning. He initially developed this technique when he was only 12 years old and had reached the rank of jonin. At the time, the ability was noted for its power but left him vulnerable to a counterattack which necessitated in him having to master it better for it to be effective in the field.
  • Lightning Release: Lightning Beast Tracking Fang (雷遁・雷獣追牙, Raiton: Raijū Tsuiga) : a lightning technique whereby he crafted a hound made of electricity that he sent after a target where its movements were unpredictable making it difficult to avoid and the beast was connected to a cord of electricity held by Kakashi.
  • Lightning Release: Purple Electricity (雷遁・紫電, Raiton: Shiden) : a new technique developed by Kakashi after the loss of his Sharingan that left him unable to use his Lightning Cutter technique safely.
  • Summoning Technique (寄せの術, Kuchiyose no Jutsu) :
  • Kamui (神威, Kamui) : a space-time jutsu tied to the Mangekyō Sharingan where by concentrating and using a supply of chakra he could create a portal within line of sight into another dimension. At first, he could only create a small tear that could threaten to pull a person into it and could any object trapped within it. In one case, he used it to dampen the effects of an explosion that threatened to kill himself and his cohorts.

Due to his skill, he came to be assigned to the ranks of the Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai (暗殺戦術特殊部隊, literally meaning: Special Assassination and Tactical Squad). This saw him operating in the shadows where he helped handle threats to the village. By adulthood, he came to be a sensei to his own students that were gathered under Team Kakashi (カカシ班, Kakashi-Han).
