Tobi's mask shatters revealing his identity in Naruto v1 #63.

Obito Uchiha (Japanese: うちは オビト, Hepburn: Uchiha Obito) was a male human ninja of the Uchiha clan who resided in the village of Konohagakure in the Ninja World.

At the Academy, he underwent training where he longed to become a talented ninja who could become Hokage one day. In that time, he met Kakashi Hatake where he developed a one-sided rivalry with him and was jealously of his natural talent and popularity. Obito also came to meet Rin Nohara who became a close friend of his and in time he fell in love with her. Some years later, all three came to graduate from the Academy where they were placed in a team that was headed by Minato Namikaze. The team later participated in the Chūnin Exams, where Obito was defeated in the third round in a one-on-one match with Might Guy. Kakashi would go on to defeat Guy in a subsequent match, promoting him to chūnin and impressing Rin. Eager for Rin's attention, Obito trained relentlessly, eventually rising to the rank of chūnin himself. His excitement was short-lived as Kakashi soon afterwards became a jōnin, once again earning Rin's praise and Obito's resentment. During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi was placed in charge of the team for a mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge, which would hinder Iwagakure from using Kusagakure as a relief point. Before beginning the mission, Minato and Rin gave gifts to Kakashi to celebrate his promotion to jōnin, though Obito had 'forgotten', straining their already poor relationship. Minato was soon called to the front lines, leaving the team to complete the mission alone under Kakashi's command. The three were discovered by Iwa-nin along the way and Rin was captured. Kakashi elected to abandon Rin, believing it was more important to finish the mission before concerning themselves with her safety. Obito became enraged at the idea and insisted that they focus on her rescue. When Kakashi refused, Obito left on his own, remarking that Kakashi was worse than trash for abandoning his friends. Obito located the cave the Iwa-nin were using as a hideout, but was found by a camouflaged Taiseki before he could launch a rescue. Kakashi, moved by Obito's earlier words, arrived in time to save him from Taiseki's attack, but lost his left eye in the process. From his desire to help Kakashi, Obito awakened his Sharingan, allowing him to see through Taiseki's camouflage and kill him. Obito and Kakashi infiltrated the cave and released Rin from her restraints. Her captor, Kakkō, caused the cave to collapse around them. As the team ran for the exit, Kakashi was struck in his blind spot and fell. When Obito noticed that Kakashi was about to be hit by a falling boulder, Obito pushed him out of the way and became trapped in his place. With the right side of his body crushed and no way to free himself, Obito accepted his fate and made an offering: to give Kakashi his left Sharingan as an apology for not getting him a present earlier. Rin performed the transplant and, once the procedure was finished, Kakashi used his new Sharingan to kill Kakkō. Iwa reinforcements quickly began to further compress the rubble, forcing Kakashi and Rin to leave Obito behind. As the rocks tightened around him, Obito reflected that he had finally started to get along with Kakashi and that he couldn't confess to Rin that he loved her. Kakashi and Rin were rescued by Minato and, when they returned to Konoha, Obito's name was engraved on the village's Memorial Stone.

Unknown to him, he subconsciously used his Sharingan to create a Kamui that helped him pass through the rocks thus surviving the cave in. Whilst unconscious, he came to be found by an elderly Madara Uchiha who had a White Zetsu save the boy. He then had Hashirama's cells implanted in Obito to help heal the boy's broken body. Despite his condition, Obito looked to return to the hidden leaf to be with his friends though he was too weak to leave and Madara refused to aid in him departing the area. In this time, Madara explained much about his life and philosophy including his view that the world was filled with pain and suffering. The older Uchiha looked to rectify this but Obito wanted no part in this and instead was determined to make himself strong enough to return home. Obito's only other companion were the White Zetsu who watched over him as he trained and overheard him speaking his two comrades names during his sleep. One day, the White Zetsu told Obito that they saw Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara both involved in a fight against ninja from the hidden mist. This news made Obito wanting to rush to support them but he lacked the strength alone until one of the White Zetsu bonded with him to serve as a living armour. They then rushed to the battle only for Obito to arrive to see Rin being killed by Kakashi before collapsing from exhaustion. Obito then fell in a rage and massacred the mist shinobi where he manifested the greater power of his Sharingan. With all dead, he left Kakashi behind and returned to Madara's underground cave where he decided to work with the elder Uchiha. Madara then revealed his plan which was to create an Infinite Tsukuyomi that would place every in a genjutsu dream world where they would live in peace. Obito thought that in such a world he could finally be with his love Rin and that the pain and suffering would come to an end. During this time, Madara gave a set of instructions detailing the Eye of the Moon Plan for Obito which included to resurrect the older Uchiha using the Rinne Rebirth jutsu that could only be performed by a person with the Rinnegan. Obito then operated in the world where he hid behind a mask to cover his identity and claimed that he was Madara Uchiha.

For his task, he was given a guide in the form of Black Zetsu where they travelled to Amegakure that held the person possessing the Rinnegan. Whilst there, they came upon a fledgling group called the Akatsuki which opposed the tyranny and war that engulfed their land. In his masked state, Obito offered the Akatsuki his support where he claimed that he could help bring about a world of peace though in reality he simply wanted to gain the support of Nagato who possessed the Rinnegan which Madara had implanted in the shinobi when he was a child. However, Yahiko who headed the Akatsuki refused though the masked 'Madara' claimed that they would eventually agree come to him and waited for them. One account showed that he became aware of a conspiracy held between Hanzō the Salamander and Danzō Shimura to eliminate Yahiko. To ensure Nagato's allegiance, Obito intercepted and killed the members of the Akatsuki that were attempting to rescue their leader. This ensured Yahiko's demise whereupon Nagato decided to support 'Madara' after losing hope following the death of his best friend. The incident came to cripple Nagato who was forced to remain in an elaborate device to maintain himself and forced him to operate through six bodies that he called the Six Paths of Pain. The masked 'Madara' then encouraged Nagato and Konan to believe that the only way to stop war was by acquiring the Tailed-Beasts which would then be used to bring about mass destruction that would horrify people to stop them from further conflict. For this task, a new Akatsuki was formed with Nagato as Pain becoming their public leader whilst 'Madara' adopted the guise of Tobi. They then went about recruiting powerful missing-nin to their cause and acquiring the Tailed-Beasts.

Twelve years ago, he came to secretly visit Rin's grave in Konoha where he came to spy Kakashi there already where he heard in him confiding that Minato's wife Kushina Uzumaki would soon be giving birth. Obito knew that Kushina was the jinchūriki for the Nine-Tails and that childbirth was the one time when the seal around the Tailed-Beast was weakened. Thus, he determined that this was a good opportunity for him to claim the power of the Nine-Tails. As a result, on the night of October 10 he came to track down Kushina Uzumaki where he managed to bypass the barrier around the site and eliminated the Anbu bodyguards as well as the midwives. The Masked Man (仮面の男, Kamen no Otoko) managed to take the newborn Naruto Uzumaki as a hostage to prevent Minato from interfering. Despite that, Minato was able to recover his son and take him to safety but in the chaos that ensued Kushina had been taken by the Masked Man. He then released the Nine-Tails from her body and using his Sharingan came to control the beast who he ordered to destroy the hidden leaf. In this time, he came to battle his former sensei Minato where despite his skill he was defeated by the Fourth Hokage. However, he managed to flee the scene and in an effort to stop the Nine-Tails both Minato and his wife Kushina were forced to sacrifice themselves to stop Kuruma where the half of the Tailed-Beasts power was sealed away in their son Naruto.

Naruto

With Sasori dead, Tobi was seemingly brought into the Akatsuki to maintain their numbers with him being paired off with Deidara as they continued their mission to hunt down the Tailed-Beasts.

Tobi then confronted the Hidden Leaf when they were in pursuit of Sasuke with his goal being to delay them and prevent them from going any further. This was until Itachi Uchiha was killed in a battle against his brother whereupon Tobi fled the scene. He then took the unconscious Sasuke to an Akatsuki base where his demeanour had now completely changed with him intending to reveal the truth about Itachi to his younger brother. This involved him showing part of his face that revealed that Sharingan thus highlighting the fact that Tobi was one of the Uchiha clan. It was then that a hidden failsafe was triggered where Sasuke developed a Mangekyō Sharingan that sent an Amaterasu at Tobi in an effort to kill him. However, he survived Itachi's last trick and proceeded to tell Sasuke how everything his brother had done was to protect him from harm. He also claimed that he was Madara Uchiha and that he had sought revenge against Konohagakure for their longstanding mistreatment of the Uchiha clan. Ultimately, his words convinced Sasuke to turn against the hidden leaf and seek about its destruction where he allied his forces with the Akatsuki.

Upon gathering, he decided that it was time to gather the last remaining Tailed-Beasts where he had Pain dispatched to Konohagakure in order to capture Naruto Uzumaki. Similarly, he had Sasuke Uchiha and his allies being sent to capture the Eight-Tails who was held by a jinchuriki from the hidden cloud village.

In this time, he came to learn that Nagato had been killed and worse was that he betrayed the Akatsuki as he used the rebirth jutsu to restore all those killed in he attack against the hidden leaf.

Teleporting to Sasuke's location, he expressed his dissatisfaction at the young Uchiha's failure in acquiring the Eight-Tails who he revealed was actually a substitution. He then revealed that he had a new mission for Sasuke and the Taka which was to disrupt the Five Kage Summit that was being called by the Raikage. Tobi believed that such a gathering would be a threat to his plans and could not allow an alliance to be formed by them. He gave an incentive for Sasuke by revealing that Danzō Shimura was attending the summit with the man being one of those responsible for the misery experienced by Itachi Uchiha. In reality, the reason why he dispatched Sasuke for this mission was for multiple reasons as he hoped the young Uchiha would have weakened several of the Kage in order for them to be taken hostage. Another reason was to improve Sasuke's visual jutsu and develop his sharingan even further by having him fight stronger opponents. Tobi though had to take part in the fight when Sasuke was nearly killed by the Tsuchikage's Dust Release technique where he used his transportation ability to take him to safety. He then had Karin sent to heal Sasuke whilst Tobi spoke to the Kage at the scene. 'Madara' claimed that he planned to have the Tailed-Beasts merged back to their original form as the Ten-Tails and use them to perform an Infinite Tsukuyomi that would bring about a lasing peace to the world by stripping free will from the inhabitants of the Ninja World. Thus, he demanded the Kage hand over the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails to him but they refused to comply with him. As a result, 'Madara' declared the start of the Fourth Great Shinobi War and that the next time they would meet would be on the battlefield as he teleported away.

He then intercepted the fleeing Danzō who was attempting to return to the hidden leaf alongside his bodyguards. This saw Fū Yamanaka and Torune Aburame attacking Tobi who despite their skill were easily defeated leaving Shimura alone. However, rather than fight him, Tobi instead teleported Sasuke to the scene where he had the Uchiha get his revenge for the destruction of his clan against Danzō. Observing the battle, Tobi witnessed as Shimura unleashed a range of stolen jutsu techniques through the Sharingan eyes he had implanted in his arm. Despite this power, he came to be defeated by Sasuke with Tobi pleased at seeing the young Uchiha manifest Susanoo. With Shimura defeated, Tobi looked to claim Shisui Uchiha's eye from him but Danzō activated a Reverse Four Symbols Sealing in an attempt to take his two enemies with him but failed to accomplish this trap. Tobi then took his body away and left Sasuke to get some rest from the recent battle. Tobi though found that Sasuke had not yet returned and teleported back to the scene to find the Uchiha in a battle against Naruto Uzumaki. Intervening, he teleported Sasuke back to their headquarters at the Mountains Graveyard where he requested to have his brothers eyes implanted in him to increase his power.

By this point, he looked to acquire the remaining jinchuriki where he had Sasuke and his team go after the Eight-Tails. Meanwhile, Pain and Konan were dispatched to the hidden leaf to acquire the Nine-Tails from Naruto. After Taka left, Tobi met with Kisame, consoling him over Itachi's death and revealing his face, allowing Kisame to recognise him as the former Mizukage. Tobi also met with Zetsu and they discussed how much easier their plans would be now that Itachi was dead. Zetsu questioned Akatsuki's recent actions, specifically the loss of five members, but Tobi insisted it had all been worth it to gain Sasuke's loyalty. Taka later delivered the Eight-Tails' jinchūriki, Killer B, to Tobi. The remaining members of Akatsuki began the sealing process, but quickly found that it was only one of the Eight-Tails' tentacles disguised as B. Tobi was irritated that Sasuke failed in his mission, but still sealed the tentacle into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path so that it would have at least a fragment of the beast's chakra.

Much to Tobi's surprise, Pain was defeated and even betrayed the Akatsuki by siding with Naruto after becoming inspired by him. This saw Nagato using the rebirth technique to restore the souls of everyone who had been killed in Konohagakure though died in the process. His body was taken by Konan back to their village where she similarly also left the ranks of the Akatsuki. Tobi decided to claim back the eyes in Nagato for himself and travelled to the village where Konan opposed him leading to an intense battle between the pair. Despite her preparations, Konan was defeated and killed by Tobi who then took Nagato's body away back to his headquarters. Whilst there. he encountered Kabuto Yakushi who offered his services as an ally where he revealed that he had perfected the reanimation technique. This allowed him to return dead shinobi that followed his commands with Tobi being forced to accept Kabuto's offer after seeing that among the dead shinobi was the real Madara Uchiha. Thus, Yakushi came to be an ally for the Akatsuki in the coming Fourth Shinobi World War though Tobi remained on guard as he did not trust Kabuto. Once preparations were complete, the Fourth Shinobi World War began as thousands of White Zetsu and reanimated ninja were deployed onto the field. By this point, Kabuto came to capture Anko Mitarashi when she tracked him to the Mountains' Graveyard. Tobi though came to suspect that Kabuto had deliberately led her to their hideout where he suspected that Yakushi intended for the Akatsuki and Allied Shinobi Forces to destroy one another. As a sign of loyalty, Tobi wanted Kabuto to kill Anko but he refused on the grounds that he intended to use her to make the Impure World Reincarnation even stronger. Still uneasy, Tobi had White Zetsu spores planted on Yakushi so that his actions could still be monitored. By this point, Tobi came to learn that Naruto and Killer B had joined the battlefield. This saw Tobi entering the conflict where he summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path which he used to decimate the First Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces. He then sought out the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei that contained the reanimated Gold and Silver Brothers which he claimed for the next stage of his plans. By this point, Tobi had returned to his hideout where six of the reanimated jinchūriki had been implanted with the Rinnegan and through the Six Paths technique he controlled them as they went out into the field.

Tobi leads the Six Paths towards Killer B and Naruto. Naruto headbutts Tobi as soon as they meet, to which Tobi only responds by pointing out that Naruto couldn't even scratch his mask. Naruto notices his new Rinnegan and remarks that it is the same as the "other" Madara's. Realising that Kabuto has revealed his secret, Tobi quietly curses Kabuto before shedding his Madara-identity, embracing the role of being a 'nobody'. Tobi has his Six Paths engage Naruto and a transformed Killer B. B levels the area in an attempt to force Tobi away while he seals the six jinchūriki, which Tobi counters by having the jinchūriki enter Version 2 forms. As the jinchūriki overwhelm Naruto and B, Tobi takes advantage of Naruto's distraction and nearly captures him, only to be parried by Might Guy and Kakashi Hatake. In the confusion of their appearance, the Five-Tails breaks free of Tobi's control but he promptly subdues it. He then forces the Four-Tails and Six-Tails to fully transform in an attempt to stack the odds in his favour. The Four-Tails is able to swallow Naruto, leading Tobi to believe that Naruto is out of commission. Instead, the Four-Tails manages to communicate to Naruto how Tobi is controlling it. Naruto escapes from its mouth, locates the chakra receiver embedded in the Four-Tails' flesh, and removed it. With the Four-Tails free, Tobi quickly summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to reseal the beast. He has the remaining jinchūriki transform into their respective tailed beasts to try and finally bring the situation under his control. Despite the overwhelming power of the five tailed beasts, Naruto, working in full cooperation with the Nine-Tails, is able to neutralise all of them and release them from Tobi's influence. Like the Four-Tails, Tobi seals them back into the Statue. Despite the setbacks, Tobi remains confident that he will emerge victorious. Sometime later, the revived bodies of the jinchūriki, having been kept restrained by a transformed Killer B, are released from the effects of the Impure World Reincarnation, causing them to once again become lifeless corpses. As this could only mean that Kabuto has failed, Tobi realises that time is running out. With no other option he tosses the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei into the Demonic Statue's mouth which, in addition to the Eight-Tails' tentacle from the fake Killer B, completes the set of the nine tailed beasts, initiating the Ten-Tails' revival.

While the Demonic Statue undergoes its regeneration into the Ten-Tails, Tobi protects it from Naruto, B, Guy, and Kakashi. Despite their combined efforts they are unable to get past Tobi or damage him. Tobi is even able to turn some of their own attacks against them, such as a lightning-infused kunai that Kakashi is forced to send away with Kamui. After this latter exchange, however, Kakashi notices that Tobi's mask takes damage. Unable to attribute the damage to any of their attacks, Kakashi tests a theory: Naruto attacks Tobi with a Rasengan, and when it appears to pass through Tobi, Kakashi targets the Rasengan with Kamui. Tobi's arm is then damaged. Kakashi concludes that his Kamui and Tobi's ability share the same dimension; that attacks sent to the dimension at the same moment that Tobi has transported his body parts there for safety will do damage to Tobi. Now that they have a strategy to use against Tobi, Naruto, B, Guy, and Kakashi begin to coordinate their efforts. One of Naruto's shadow clones attacks Tobi, but the attack appears to fail and the clone disappears. The real Naruto attacks immediately afterwards with a Tailed Beast Ball, which Tobi avoids by retreating to the other dimension. There he finds Naruto's shadow clone waiting for him, having been sent there by Kakashi's Kamui. Before he has a chance to react he is hit in the face with a Rasengan, shattering his mask. His face revealed, Kakashi and Guy recognise him as their former team-mate Obito Uchiha. Kakashi is devastated to learn that Obito is not only alive but is now one of the world's worst criminals. Before he can find out how Obito survived, the reincarnated Madara Uchiha arrives at Obito's side. Seeing the Demonic Statue, Madara chides Obito for reviving the Ten-Tails prematurely and reviving him in the state he is in. Obito informs him of Nagato's betrayal before returning to him his gunbai and directing him to Naruto and B. While Madara goes after them, Obito fights Kakashi. He ignores Kakashi's pleas for an explanation and nearly kills him, stopped only by Naruto. When Kakashi gets over his initial shock and starts to fight seriously, Obito sends him away with Kamui. This is part of Kakashi's plan, as through a combination of efforts Naruto and Killer B nearly destroy the Demonic Statue. But the attack comes a moment too late, and from the smoke emerges the Ten-Tails. Obito and Madara take position atop the Ten-Tails' head and attach themselves to it so they can control its actions.

As they no longer need Naruto or B, they came to direct the Ten-Tails to kill their enemies. The combined Allied Shinobi Forces arrive in time to stop the attack. The Allies collaborate against the Ten-Tails and succeed in restraining it, but the Ten-Tails matures to its next form and releases itself. Though this was countered easily enough, they have the Ten-Tails destroy the Allied Shinobi Forces' Headquarters to prevent future collaborations. Madara remarks that the battle is more difficult than it should be and blames Obito's deviations from the original plan, namely not bringing Madara back to life in the correct way. Obito replies that he never trusted Madara would keep his word and that he now follows his own version of the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito uses the beast as a medium to fire off several wooden projectiles into the assembled Alliance. Many die, including Neji Hyūga, which Obito uses to try and encourage the Alliance and, specifically, Naruto of the futility of their resistance. Naruto and the Allies refuse to be broken by their shared loss and instead unite for yet another attack, successfully separating the Ten-Tails from Madara and Obito's control. Madara and Obito join forces against the shinobi army, but now have the unrestrained Ten-Tails to contend with. The Ten-Tails prepares to use Tenpenchii, which Kakashi attempts to stop with Kamui. Obito intercepts him and together they relocate to the other dimension. With nobody to interrupt them, Kakashi again tries to speak with him, and Obito finally starts to answer some of his questions, explicitly stating Kakashi should feel no guilt for killing Rin so many years ago. Kakashi tries to explain, but Obito saves him the trouble, saying he already knows the circumstances surrounding Rin's death and that it was Rin's idea to die, which is what led him to despair at the world that forced Rin to kill herself. Kakashi persists that what Obito is doing is wrong, but Obito continues to rebuff him. In an ensuing fight, he directs the outcome to have Kakashi stab him through the heart with a lightning-infused kunai in order to get rid of the Forbidden Individual Curse Tag Madara placed on him years ago. Obito gives Kakashi a non-fatal stab in return which causes him to fall to the ground and allows Obito to return to the real world. Badly injured, Obito teleports to the top of the Ten-Tails. Madara senses his return and his weakened state and exerts his control over Obito to try and force him to perform the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique and bring him back to life. Before the technique can be completed the Allies try to eliminate Obito, including a reincarnated Minato, who is able to teleport to Obito's location using the same Flying Thunder God seal he branded Obito with years earlier. Minato and Obito only recognise each other after Obito has been cut down. Madara admits defeat, but not because Obito is dead: Obito, already beyond Madara's influence, was sealing the Ten-Tails into his body, a process he completed in time. Now the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Obito begins attacking the other reincarnated Hokage, using his new abilities to overpower them and all others with ease. Attacks do not affect him and his Truth-Seeking Balls overcome every defence that is placed against him. The Allies' only advantage is Obito's lack of control; the Ten-Tails' power physically distorts his body and some inner struggle deprives of any discretion or precision in his actions. Deep within his mind, Obito fights to rein in the Ten-Tails and keep it from tearing him apart. By focusing on a picture of his old team, he is able to subjugate the Ten-Tails' power. He hones the Ten-Tails, composes himself, and begins a methodical attack against the Allied Shinobi, nullifying every jutsu they use against him. In a blind gamble, Gamakichi uses Starch Syrup Gun against Obito, which is the first attack to not be completely nullified. Naruto realises that, despite all of Obito's new powers, he remains vulnerable to senjutsu. With the moon nearing the optimal position to perform the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Obito begins making final preparations. He traps the Alliance in a barrier and creates an enormous tree with four flowers, each flower charging a Tailed Beast Ball. The balls are fired at the shinobi forces but Naruto and Minato teleport everyone to safety. After repelling the two's senjutsu-fuelled counterattack, Obito summons the tree form of the Ten-Tails and has it absorb the chakra of nearby ninja, taking their chakra and killing many. Obito uses this rising death toll to shatter the determination of the Shinobi Alliance, offering them mercy if they stop fighting and allow themselves to enter the infinite dream. Naruto is nearly shattered, but is galvanised by Sasuke's refusal to surrender and he rallies the shinobi forces.

Naruto and Sasuke would later join forces where they combined their own senjutsu abilities against him to increasingly greater effect. Obito, who is fighting both the shinobi alliance by controlling the tree and Naruto and Sasuke personally, becomes frustrated with their continued attacks and Naruto's denial of his way of thinking. Obito forms the Sword of Nunoboko, intending to use it to strike all of them down for good. Naruto and Sasuke realise they will only have a small window to defeat Obito so they enlist the aid of their classmates from Konoha to help them with a combined attack against Obito. They successfully overwhelm Obito and he begins to lose control of the Ten-Tails' chakra, giving the Alliance a chance to pull it from his body. During this time, Naruto enters Obito's consciousness through their linked chakras and begins to reason with him. Though he tries to resist the pull of both Naruto's words and the Shinobi Alliance's grip on his chakra, the chakra of the nine tailed beasts is removed from him and he falls to the ground, his power and transformation gone and his battle lost. As Obito lies helpless, Kakashi finally returns from Kamui's dimension with the resolve to kill him. Minato stops him and explains it's no longer necessary, as Obito's defeat by Naruto has finally shown him that he was wrong all this time and that deep down, he was living a lie fighting for the Infinite Tsukuyomi. As the Alliance begins shifting their attention to Madara, who is fighting elsewhere, Obito decides to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive everyone he's killed as atonement for his sins. As he is performing the technique, Black Zetsu emerges from underground and forces him to change targets, reviving Madara instead. Black Zetsu tries to take the Rinnegan Obito is using also, but realises it will not be able to get away from Kakashi and Minato. Obito explains to them what he has been forced to do and pleads with them to destroy his Rinnegan at any cost. While he struggles against Black Zetsu's control, the Demonic Statue is summoned from Obito's body, sapping what little energy he has left and enabling Black Zetsu to overpower him. Obito later manages to reassert control of his body just before Black Zetsu can transfer the Rinnegan and the Nine-Tails' Yin-half (taken from Minato) to Madara, who has already regained the Rinnegan Obito hid away and become the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. Madara tries to convince Obito of the error he is making and lets his guard down while he gives Obito another chance. Obito opts instead to stab Madara, and in the process steals fragments of the One-Tail and Eight-Tails' chakra, embracing his identity as Obito Uchiha for the first time in years. Because Obito has all of the pieces that Madara still needs for his plans, his escape becomes paramount. Kakashi uses Kamui on him while he also uses it on himself, allowing him to flee to the other dimension before Madara can stop him. Arriving in the Kamui dimension, he came upon Sakura who was desperately trying to keep Naruto alive by using emergency life support due to the removal of the Nine-Tails' Yang-half from his body. Assuring her of his intentions, he came to place the other half of Nine-Tails along with two other Tail-Beasts inside Naruto. This act came to save the young Uzumaki's life and gave him the necessary power to save his life and continue the fight against Madara. When Naruto recovers, Obito sends him back to the real world to fight. He then asks Sakura to destroy his Rinnegan. Before she can go through with it Madara arrives, having stolen Kakashi's Sharingan so that he could confront Obito. Obito teleports Sakura away so that Madara couldn't kill her. Because Obito is out of options, Madara gets one last thing off his chest: he orchestrated Rin's death all those years ago in order to gain Obito's cooperation. With that said, Black Zetsu then took control of Obito's body.

Obito awakens later to find circumstances greatly changed: the Rinnegan is gone, replaced by his original left eye; Black Zetsu is completely gone from his body; the Infinite Tsukuyomi has been cast and the world trapped in a dream; Madara is gone, replaced by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki; only Naruto and Sasuke, with help from Kakashi and Sakura, remain to resist Kaguya; they are now all stuck in a network of Kaguya's Dimensions, lost within which somewhere is Sasuke. After taking all this in, Obito expresses his belief that he can use his two Mangekyō Sharingan to locate Sasuke. Naruto creates an opportunity for Obito and Sakura to infiltrate Kaguya's core dimension and then draws her away while they work. Through a process of trial-and-error – the stress this causes to his body being healed by Sakura – Obito searches through Kaguya's dimensions with Kamui and eventually finds Sasuke. Obito returns Sasuke and Sakura to the dimension where Naruto and Kakashi are. He watches as Naruto and Sasuke fight Kaguya, their combined powers the only ones capable of stopping her. Aware of this, Kaguya relocates them to a dimension with powerful gravity and pins Naruto and Sasuke down while she attacks with All-Killing Ash Bones. Obito and Kakashi, empowered by a shared memory of their past friendship, place themselves in front of Naruto and Sasuke as shields. Because his odyssey began by saving Kakashi from death by a boulder, Obito decides he must now end things by saving Kakashi's life again: he uses his left eye to teleport the attack aimed at Kakashi away, allowing the attack directed at him to connect. Obito's body begins to crumble and there is nothing anyone can do to save him. He warns Kakashi that he will not be around to save him a third time and places his faith for a better world in Naruto before dying with a smile.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Upon being the leader of the Akatsuki, he began to claim that he was the Uchiha's legendary warrior Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara). To hide his identity, he had a tendency of wearing unique featureless masks that had a single opening for his eye where his foes referred to him as the Masked Man (仮面の男, Kamen no Otoko). He also came to make use of an alias where he went under the name of Tobi (トビ) to hide his various identities. After the real Madara was awakened, Tobi came to be known as the Masked Madara (仮面のマダラ, Kamen no Madara) until his true identity was revealed.

One of his desires as a young shinobi was to rise to the position of Hokage.

At first, it appeared that his descent into villainy stemmed over the death of Rin and Kakashi killing her. However, Obito revealed that such a view was wrong and actually underestimated him. He had been aware that Rin had sacrificed herself in order to save the hidden leaf and forced her self to die at Kakashi's hands. Obito though came to believe that Kakashi and the grave of Rin were not the real ones. Instead, he wanted to enter into a dream world where he could be with their real selves and that they could live together happily.

As the Masked Madara, his plan was to bring about the Infinite Tsukuyomi which he intended to perform using the moon. He believed that this would help end the endless cycle of violence by stripping free will from shinobi. This was the plan set out by Madara which was Eye of the Moon Plan (月の眼計画, Tsuki no Me Keikaku, English TV: Project "Tsuki no Me") whereby everyone would be placed in a dream-like genjutsu. To Obito, he believed that this would reunite him with all his friends and loved ones. As such, he had no issue with killing Kakashi as he reasoned that he would be reunited with his comrade in the dream world. This was also deemed as the only way of ending the constant conflict that affected the world.

Within the Akatsuki, he took the name Tobi and adopted the mannerisms of the one White Zetsu that would keep him company. This was used to prevent anyone from realising that he was the mastermind of the organization.

In his youth, he had a longstanding rivalry with Kakashi Hatake with the two often getting into arguments with one another.

At the hidden leaf, he came to love Rin Nohara (のはらリン, Nohara Rin) but had never confessed his feelings for her. In fact, one of the reasons for going rogue stemmed from Rin's death.

After being saved by Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara), he came to grateful to the man for saving his life but was weary of him because of his reputation. Initially, he was averse to working with him with Obito simply wanting to return to his village. This changed though after the death of Rin whereupon he decided to ally himself with Madara in order to bring about a perfect dream world for everyone in the world. Despite that, he said that he did not fully trust Madara even though the pair were working together. Part of this was seen when he hid one of Madara's original Rinnegan eyes in a safe spot rather than return it. Obito came to ask what he meant to his partner to which the elder Uchiha responded by saying that he was simply another 'Madara'. To him, 'Madara' was the name given to anyone that rejected the modern world and attempted to use this to have Obito return to his side. However, by this point, Obito had rejected his 'mentors' teachings and instead turned against him.

Kakashi came to see Naruto Uzumaki (うずまきナルト, Uzumaki Naruto) as sharing many of the traits of a younger Obito. This led to him wanting to break Naruto of his ideals and to show him the cruel nature of the Ninja World. Despite his attempts, Naruto remained committed to his ideals and even made Obito turn against Madara.

Powers and abilities

Obito Uchiha was a human with the ability to manipulate chakra that allowed him to achieve a number of feats such as performing a number of jutsu. As a genin, his skills were average at best where he struggled to match his classmates at the Academy. Despite that, Obito sought to improve himself and trained for several months at a time to eventually become a chūnin. His last mission for the hidden leaf saw him badly injured where he was only saved by the actions of Madara. this saw one side of his body being destroyed leaving him unable to use it. To function, a large section of his body were replaced by tissue from White Zetsu. This dominated the right side of his body and his entire arm was composed of this matter. It was shown that Tobi had no issue ripping it off and replacing it with another one. Through his sensing technique, he could detect chakra allowing him to predict attacks and locate others from great distances even in different dimensions.

Due to being an Uchiha, he was in possession of a Sharingan (写輪眼, literally meaning: Copy Wheel Eye, meaning (Viz): Mirror Wheel Eye) that allowed him to perform a number of Dōjutsu (瞳術, English TV: Visual Jutsu, literally meaning: Eye Techniques) techniques. During his last mission for the hidden leaf, it came to awaken with two tomoe which allowed him to track chakra signatures and predict movements. This later evolved into a more advanced state that was the Mangekyō Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, literally meaning: Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye) after he witnessed Rin's death. As it matured, he grow powerful enough to place a Tailed-Beast under his control allowing him to command them. Following the death of Nagato, he came to take the Rinnegan (輪廻眼, literally meaning: Saṃsāra Eye) where one was placed in Tobi's left eye thus granting him access to its great power.

One of the main abilities offered to him by the Mangekyo Sharingan was access to teleportation. This involved him absorbing himself through his right eye into the special dimension and from there he can travel anywhere in the world instantly. A weakness though was that the technique took a moment to perform with only one eye thus meaning that a particularly fast opponent could strike him before he could teleport himself away. Another power that Obito was the ability to seemngly phase through any solid object. This was a valuable technique in battle as it meant that all attacks simply passed through whilst his own were able to connect with an opponent. It appeared that he had a completely separate ability that was intangibility but this was actually a specialised application of his teleportation. When using this power, he was able to send only parts of his body to another dimension thus allowing him or objects thrown at him to physically pass through him. Obito was only able to make himself continuously intangible for about 5 minutes at a time before needing to rest.

Like many shinobi, he was trained in the art of shurikenjutsu (手裏剣術, literally meaning: concealed hand blade techniques) where he was able to throw shuriken and other weapons at his targets. These were stored in his Kamui dimension where he was able to deploy many of them against his foes.

Among the techniques known to him included:

  • Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique (火遁・豪火球の術, Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu) : a signature Uchiha Clan technique where he kneaded the chakra in his body that he turned into fire and expelled from his mouth with it taking the form of a large fireball.
  • Uchiha Flame Formation (うちは火炎陣, Uchiha Kaenjin) : a technique whereby the user manifested a small chakra flame on each finger of one hand whereupon they slammed their palm on the ground resulting in the creation of a cylindrical barrier of flames enveloping a location of their choosing. Any enemy that came into contact with the barrier's exterior were quickly quickly set ablaze.
  • Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance (火遁・爆風乱舞, Katon: Bakufū Ranbu) :
  • Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique (火遁・豪火球の術, Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu) :
  • Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path (口寄せ・外道魔像, Kuchiyose: Gedō Mazō) : Obito was capable of using the Summoning Technique where the power of the Rinnegan allowed him to call upon the Gedoh Statue.
  • Kamui (神威, Kamui) : a space-time ninjutsu that was unlocked after attaining the power of the Mangekyō Sharingan. With it, he was able to transfer objects to and from another dimension with these characterised by a spiralling void that swirled in and out as they distorted the form of the target.
  • Truth-Seeking Ball (求道玉, Gudōdama) :

After implanting the Rinnegan in his eyes, Obito gained access to the Six Paths Technique (六道の術, Rikudō no Jutsu) that allowed him to operate through the bodies of six former jinchūriki that were reincarnated by Kabuto Yakushi. The corpses vision was linked by the Rinnegan allowing Obito to see through all their eyes and respond easily to attacks.

He was able to use Fūinjutsu (封印術, English TV: Sealing Jutsu, literally meaning: Sealing Techniques) that allowed him to control beings as powerful as Ten-Tails. It was through the Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal (六道十尾柩印, Rikudō Jūbi Kyūin) which made him the Jinchūriki (人柱力, literally meaning: Power of Human Sacrifice) of the Ten-Tails. After sealing all Tailed-Beasts, he came to make himself into the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails thus gaining its incredible power. At first, his body struggled to contain this power that attempted to consume his mind until through strength of will he pulled himself together. In this state, Obito's body turned white where in this form he was granted tremendous boosts of speed and strength. After Ten-Tails was stripped from him, Obito came to lose much of the power he gained as a Jinchūriki though he retained a small amount of it in his body.

As the Masked Madara, he came to wield the Gunbai Uchiwa (軍配団扇, Gunbai Uchiwa, literally meaning: army arrangement fan) that was a non-folding fan carved from a unique spirit tree. With it, he was capable of performing the Uchiha Return (うちは返し, Uchihagaeshi) capable of blocking an incoming attack where the incoming chakra was nullified into wind nature transformation that was then reflected back at the enemy.

He was seemingly the mastermind behind the Akatsuki (暁, literally meaning: "Dawn" or "Daybreak") and served as their hidden leader.
