Biography
Lash was a male Inhuman born in the remote city of Orollan who only contained small quantities of the Terrigen crystals that allowed their metamorphosis. Years ago, Lash was one of the lucky chosen to undergo the rite of Terrigenesis whereupon he emerged in his powered up state. (Inhuman v1 #1)
He was in Norway where he intercepted a transport of an Inhuman cocoon where he watched over it to see the newly metamorphosed person. However, he concluded that the person was a failure and he proceeded to kill him. Lash then continued his mission where he next travelled to Illinois where he came upon the Pertuz household. Inside were two newly formed cocoons though one failed to reach completion with the woman inside dying as a result whilst the other manifested into a fiery Inhuman named Inferno. The two battled but their fight was interrupted by the Inhuman Queen Medusa who was arrived to investigate the Terrigen Cloud's effects. She caused Lash to depart the scene but he told Dante Pertruz that he had a choice to join other tribes rather than those of Attilan. (Inhuman v1 #1)
At the advice of Lineage, a group of Inhumans from New Attilan teleported to the city looking to capture Lash. He urged his recruits to fight them, claiming their lives were in danger. As the battle developed, Lash was incapacitated by Gorgon, and ultimately apprehended by Queen Medusa. Medusa and the Nuhumans later left Orollan, warning Lash to stay away from her path were he not to help her. (Inhuman v1 #3)
Lash later interrupted a fight between the Invaders and a group of Neo-Nazis that took place in Germany to recruit two Invaders that had recently become Nuhumans, Iron Cross and Toro. (All-New Invaders v1 #14) Lash detected that the leader of the Neo-Nazi group, Uber Alles, was a Nuhuman too, and tried to recruit him as well. The Inhuman Royal Family arrived to thwart Lash's plan, forcing him to flee, but not before being able to recruit Uber Alles, while Iron Cross and Toro refused his offer without reservations. (All-New Invaders v1 #15)
Lash later found out from Maximus that Iron Man had abducted Ulysses Cain and considered it to be an act of war. In response Lash and the Tribe destroyed Stark Manufacturing Facility SZ-4 near Zurich, Switzerland on behalf of Inhumans everywhere in order to force Queen Medusa's hand. After a confrontation with Medusa and the Ultimates, Medusa had Lockjaw teleport Lash and his group to the Triskelion where they were taken in custody. (Uncanny Inhumans v1 #13)
In this time afterwards, he came to determine that the Inhumans lacked the numbers in taking the world from mankind. Thus, he decided to create a version of the Terrigen bomb and allow it to create a new surge of NuHumans. However, the bomb was not as sophisticated at the original and could function by using an Inhuman who had been exposed to Terrigen from birth. The only such individual with this trait was Black Bolt with Lash targeting him upon the Inhuman King's return to Earth. He kidnapped his alien ally Blinky and had Black Bolt meet him in the fallen settlement of Orollan with him forcing the monarch to bow to him leading to his capture. (Black Bolt v1 #10) He had intended to use Black Bolt as a means of powering a machine to trigger a new Terrigen Bomb that would unleash mists across the planet. However, during this time, Blinky transformed into the Jailer who was a powerful Inhuman criminal that was a psychic vampire who fed on the essence of others. Lash attempted to fight the entity and unleashed his power only for it to have no effect with the Jailer feeding on Lash. (Black Bolt v1 #11)
Overview
Personality and attributes
He believed not all Inhumans were worthy of Terrigenesis and held that only a chosen few had the right to be transformed by the mists. Those that went through the mists that he deemed were inferior were then killed by his hands. Lash believed that an act was one of mercy that he gave to his victims. (Inhuman v1 #1)
It was shown that he resented the Inhumans of Attilan and did not recognise their leaders as having rule over him. (Inhuman v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Notes
- Lash was created by Matt Fraction, Charles Soule and Joe Madureira where he made his first appearance in Inhuman v1 #1 (June, 2014).
- In an interview, Soule said on the character, "The idea is that not everyone on Earth sees all these new Inhumans popping up as a good thing -- one of our main new antagonists is a dude named Lash (who has an awesome design by Joe Mad). He's Inhuman as well, but he lived in a community isolated from the main group in Attilan. They had only a very small amount of Terrigen to effect the transformations that are so central to Inhuman existence, so they had to be very selective about who got it. It became almost a religious experience -- a sacrament. So, to Lash, the Terrigen cloud making its way around the globe, changing everyone with even a touch of Inhuman blood, is deeply sacrilegious -- and he acts."

Television
- In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Lash made an appearance as an antagonist in the third season of the live-action television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Univrse where he was portrayed by actor Matt Willig. This version had a largely different backstory as his secret identity was that of psychologist Andrew Garner who was played by actor Blair Underwood. After the conflict with Jianging, Phil Coulson had all Inhuman documentation from Afterlife sent to Dr. Garner for study. Upon opening one book, he was exposed to Terrigen Mist that transformed him into an Inhuman who by instinct started targeting other Inhumans. Secretly, Lash eliminated Inhumans as he believed it was a kindness for them whilst secretly operating in his civilian guise as Andrew Garner that gathered intelligence for his targets.
- Executive producer Jed Whedon said on the character, "I would just say that we’re doing our own take on it. There will be some elements from the comics for sure, but as we always do, we want people to not know what’s coming, so we’re changing it up a little bit."
Video games
- In Marvel: Future Fight, Lash was introduced as a playable character in the mobile game where his appearance was based on his Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
