The Prophets
At some point, a Prophet took possession of a human being by the name of Sarah and guided her to meet Joseph Sisko. The pair fell in love and their union produced Benjamin Sisko who was destined to be the Emissary of the Prophets for the Bajoran people in the future. Afterwards, the Prophet would leave Sarah who returned to her life as a journalist and abandoned her married life as her memory prior to meeting to Joseph returned. She would eventually die in a skimmer accident leaving Benjamin Sisko in the care of his father. (Episode: Shadows and Symbols)
In 2374, an ancient event dictated by prophecy came to pass when a stone tablet from the Bajoran city of B'Hala was brought onto Deep Space 9. Once there, Captain Sisko attempted to study it and in an unexplained fit of rage destroyed the artifact leading to two entities leaving the relic. One of these entities was a Prophet who was to take part in the prophecised battle of the Reckoning against its Pah-Wraith counterpart known as Kosst Amojan. The two incorporeal entities took corporeal hosts with the Prophet taking Kira Nerys whilst the Pah-Wraith took Jake Sisko as his body. According to Shabren's Fifth Prophecy, the Pah-Wraith would have been destroyed by the Prophet bringing about the rebirth of a golden age to Bajor and bringing a thousand years of peace. The writings did not specify who would be the winner of this battle. (Episode: The Reckoning)
Benjamin Sisko initially was reluctant to accept such a prominent religious position in Bajoran society, but that changed in 2372 when the Prophets sent a 22nd century Bajoran, Akorem Laan, two hundred years into his future, where he was accepted by many Bajorans as being the true Emissary since he discovered the wormhole first. Akorem encouraged draconian reforms on Bajor that Captain Sisko knew would affect its membership application to the Federation. After experiencing a lapsed vision, Sisko realized the significant influence the Emissary had on Bajoran society, then challenging Akorem and taking him to the wormhole to ask the Prophets who was the true Emissary. The Prophets said Sisko was of Bajor and returned Akorem to his own time. The Prophets' intention was to make Sisko accept his position as their Emissary. (Episode: Accession)
Following the disappearance of the wormhole, there became a resurgence in the Cult of the Pah-Wraith's who believed this heralded a new age for Bajor. (Episode: Image in the Sand) After Captain Sisko recovered the Orb of the Emissary, he managed to re-open the Bajoran wormhole where the Prophet's expelled the Pah-Wraith that had entered within it. (Episode: Shadows and Symbols) A Prophet that inhabited Sarah Sisko appeared before Benjamin Sisko in order to warn him against marrying Kasidy Yates as that was not his destiny. She warned that any such marriage would bring only sorrow to his life as there were many tasks ahead of him as his greatest trial was to begin. Despite her warning, Benjamin Sisko decided to marry Kasidy Yates regardless of the destiny ahead of him. (Episode: Penumbra)
Overview
In their natural state, the Prophets appeared as blue translucent energy capable of rapid movement throughout any environment. When communicating with visitors in their own domain, the Prophets could appear as someone familiar to the visitors by probing their consciousness. For instance, when first encountered in "person" by Starfleet Commander Benjamin Sisko in 2369, the Prophets appeared to take the form of people from his past and present—including his wife Jennifer Sisko; son Jake Sisko; Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his alter-ego Locutus of Borg, against whom Sisko had once fought; the Vulcan captain of the USS Saratoga, on which Sisko had served; Kai Opaka; and others. Being incorporeal beings, Prophets required a mortal vessel to serve as the means of interacting with the corporeal realm. Such hosts sometimes had their eyes glow blue and were able to fiery a beam of blue energy against powerful incorporeal foes such as Pah-Wraiths. Undue exertion on the host sometimes damaged the vessel causing them to bleed from their nose and other features. (Episode: The Reckoning)
Their only known vulnerability was to chroniton radiation. (Episode: The Assignment) A slow rise in chroniton radiation did not kill these beings but forced them to leave the area. (Episode: The Reckoning)
The nature of the Prophets meant that they were non-linear beings with time being a construct that they initially were not familiar with as it did not impact their existence. As such, aspects such as the past, present and the future were a single continuum for them. This meant that they did not understand concepts such as linear progression involving birth and death. (Episode: Emissary)
They were known to peacefully attempted to make contact with other civilisations though rejected those that they deemed as adversarial and aggressive. This led to them making contact with the Bajorans and in effect shaping that species theology. (Episode: Emissary)
Aspects of their technology included the Orbs of the Prophets that had been dispatched to Bajor. Their technological level allowed them to construct stable artificial wormholes linking two different regions of space such as the Alpha Quadrant to the Gamma Quadrant. (Episode: Emissary)
