History
The Diviners were constructs that were created by a rogue faction among the alien Kree civilization as vessels and containers for the Terrigen Crystals. Their exact construction was not known but they were built during experiments conducted thousands of years ago on ancient Humans on the primitive world of Earth. At this time, the Kree were genetic altering a select number of Humans to create living weapons that became known as the Inhumans. Their physiology contained genetic patterns embedded deep within their being that could be made manifest through exposure to the Terrigen Crystals. Once done, they went through a metamorphosis and became beings with super-powered abilities. To facilitate the transformation, a temple structure was built on Earth whereby a chamber was made that would activate the Diviner and expose subjects to the Terrigen Mists. Ordinary Humans that were incompatible with the crystals suffered from horrible deaths upon exposure to the mists. The Diviners were designed to only activate when placed within the temple whereupon they would open up to reveal the Terrigen Crystals inside that started the transformation. Due to this nature, even the container of the Diviner could not be touched by ordinary Humans who died through simple physical contact with it. The purpose of the Inhumans was to serve as living weapons for the Kree war machine and to fight in their battles. As such, six Diviners were brought to Earth with them that contained the crystals needed for the transformation process to create an army. However, once the greater Kree discovered these experiments, they put an end to the project and the Diviners were believed lost forever. In time, the Inhumans were regarded as myth to both Humanity and even the Asgardians.
Overview
These devices were constructed from a metal that was actually deadly to Humans. In fact, anyone that touched it had their bodies slowly transformed into stone from simple contact. If an Inhuman touched it, the Diviner began to glow with symbols lighting up on its surface.
Notes
- Though the Terrigen Crystals featured in the comics, the Diviners themselves were an entirely original creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Initially, the device was called the Obelisk until Calvin Zabo stated that in the Inhuman language it was called a Diviner.
