History

Dragons (ドラゴン Doragon) were a species of giant winged intelligent reptiles that were native to the world of Earth Land. Around 400 years ago, the world was ruled by Dragons who were the dominate creatures in the lands with man being little more than prey for the giant beasts. During this time, one dragon did not agree with the idea of using mankind only as food and believed that they could like in peaceful co-existence with them. Within the east, a number of Dragons came to live in peace among humans with this being seen among those in the kingdom of Dragnof. They came to protect their charges from the Dragons of the West that were consuming their prey in their lands. Ultimately, they came to seek to spread their terror to the rest of humanity. This chain of events brought them into conflict with the peaceful Dragons with their arrival in the eastern lands even causing some of the native Dragons to side with them. Thus, dragon fought against dragon in a brutal conflict that remained as a stalemate between the two sides. This state of affairs changed when the peaceful dragons taught their magic to their human allies thus creating the first Dragon Slayers with the magic being developed by Irene. With their aid, they managed to turn the tide against the more aggressive dragon kind. However, this became the start of the end of the ruling age of dragons as Zeref Dragneel helped transform the Dragon Slayer Acnologia attain his ultimate form. This resulted in the human being turned into a powerful deadly dragon who turned against all the dragons where he killed them during the Dragon King Festival. The bones of the dragons were buried and their spirits remained behind whilst Acnologia became known as the feared black dragon king of Earthland. Meanwhile, the deceased dragon's life energy gathered into a powerful relic known as the Dragon Cry (竜の涙ドラゴンクライ Doragon Kurai).

During the battle with Acnologia, the dragons that opposed him were struck by a powerful attack that seared their souls. Thus, they were effectively killed in body but their spirits continued to persist over the years. They then gathered young orphaned children that they trained to be Dragon Slayers. They taught them their respective dragon slaying magical art but came to fear their charges suffering the same fate as Acnologia. To prevent this, they bonded with the spirits of the Dragon Slayers without their knowledge and thus vanished from the world. In reality, they remained within the Dragon Slayers bodies where they produced anti-bodies to prevent the dragonification process from falling on them. They also bid their time for the correct moment to reveal themselves once more into the world.

In seven years in the future, a time displaced Rogue Cheney would come to the modern day in an effort to defeat Acnologia. This version orchestrated a plot to use the Eclipse Gate to open a doorway back in time to the era of dragons and bringing an army of them to the present. Through the use of dragon tamer magic, he intended to assemble an army of the creatures which he intended to use to kill Acnologia. Through trickery, he had events organised to make it appear that the Kingdom was going to be attacked by a horde of dragons with the Gate being the only means to stopping them. Thus, the doorway had opened allowing seven of the great beasts to enter the Kingdom of Fiore before it could be closed. The giant beasts were commanded by the future Rogue to devastate the capital of the kingdom with armies of wizards failing to stop their rampage. However, it was determined that the only way to stop them was to destroy the Eclipse Gate. Following its destruction, the future Rogue and all the dragons disappeared from the current day to return to their respective time periods.

Overview

In appearance, Dragons were large titanic reptilian beings with each having different characteristics. All Dragons had a special form of magic that was unique to them.

It was said that only Dragon Slayers were able to harm and kill a Dragon.

Dragons were noted to shed their scales with them losing their colour sometime after falling. Until they lost their colour, dragon scales were said to be toxic to humans who could not handle them until that time.
