History

Dragon Slayers (Japanese: 導士ドラゴンスレイヤー, Hepburn: Doragon Sureiyā) were a class of magic user that resided in the world of Earthland and consisted of mages that had been trained by a Dragon. Around 400 years ago, the world was ruled by Dragons who were the dominate creatures in the lands with man being little more than prey for the giant beasts. During this time, one dragon did not agree with the idea of using mankind only as food and believed that they could like in peaceful co-existence with them. This dragon managed to bring others to his line of thought leading to a divide between dragons that ultimately resulted in a civil war between the two factions. Thus, dragon fought against dragon in a brutal conflict that remained as a stalemate between the two sides. This state of affairs changed when the peaceful dragons taught their magic to their human allies thus creating the first Dragon Slayers. In the kingdom of Dragnof, it was the enchanter Irene Belserion (アイリーン・ベルせリオン, Airīn Beruserion) who first developed the magic as she wanted to aid her ally the Dragon Belserion (ベルせリオン Beruserion). With their aid, they managed to turn the tide against the more aggressive dragon kind. However, this became the start of the end of the ruling age of dragons as Zeref Dragneel helped transform the Dragon Slayer Acnologia attain his ultimate form. This resulted in the human being turned into a powerful deadly dragon who turned against all the dragons where he killed them during the Dragon King Festival. The bones of the dragons were buried and their spirits remained behind whilst Acnologia became known as the feared black dragon king of Earthland.

To combat Acnologia, the dragon Igneel orchestrated a plot whereby five youths would be trained in the lost magic art of Dragon Slaying. Among those to be trained in this art was Natsu Dragneel who was the young charge of Igneel. With four other Dragons, he sealed his soul inside his Slayer foster child's body with the Dragon Soul Technique for several reasons: one was to prevent Natsu from turning into a Dragon like Acnologia by creating antibodies to prevent the Dragonization process; and the other was to allow Igneel's wounded soul time to heal by absorbing Ethernano so that he could reemerge and defeat Acnologia once and for all, like the other Dragons planned to do.

General Zash Caine on the island of Stella created a new generation of Dragon Slayers consisting of 4th generation automatons powered by Dragon Lacryma with these being known as the Quartum Army.

Overview

In appearance, Dragon Slayers were all humans that had attained incredible magic powers. Dragon Slayers were a specific kind of castor-type wizard who were skilled in the arts of Dragon Slayer Magic (滅竜魔法 Metsuryū Mahō). Those individuals that were Dragon Slayers were noted for their fine sense of smell. However, it was said that the earlier generations of Dragon Slayers tended to suffer from motion sickness. This allowed them to track people if they had their scent. It was claimed that a Dragon Slayer grew stronger if bathed in the blood of a dragon.

They were divided into a number of generations that included:

  • 1st Generation : these were magic users that were trained directly by the dragons that taught them their respective magical art with many of these seeing their teacher as a parental figure.
  • 2nd Generation : these were magic users that were implanted with a Lacryma to give them the abilities of a dragon. As they were not taught their abilities by a Dragon, they were considered artificial Dragon Slayers
  • 3rd Generation : these were magic users that were both implanted with a Lacryma and trained by a dragon who taught them the ways of their magical art.
  • 4th Generation : these were artificial beings created from either a Dragon Lacryma or pure magic power thus creating automatons able to fight indefinitely with incredible power and speed. As automatons, they are capable of fighting indefinitely until their source of power was destroyed.
  • 5th Generation : these were magic users that gained their power by devouring the flesh of a Dragon and were sometimes known as Dragon Eaters (ドラゴンイーター Doragon Ītā). Fifth Generation Dragon Slayers were said to not succumb to motion sickness compared to the earlier generations.

A few Dragon Slayers had a unique talent at consuming elements outside of their own such as Fire Dragon Slayers able to eat lightning. Upon doing so, they could wield both elements and use them in a combined attack that was greater than normal.

An advanced ability utilised by them was Dragon Force (竜の力ドラゴンフォース Doragon Fōsu) whereby the person effectively became a humanoid dragon and developed characteristics of the giant reptiles such as scaly skin along with sharp claws. It was said to be the final and most powerful state for a Dragon Slayer that granted them the power akin to a real Dragon allowing them to annihilate their targets. Dragon Force not only increased the strength of the Dragon Slayer but gave them access to more advanced techniques. Certain Dragon Slayers were only able to enter it in extreme situations but with training some were able to enter this state at will.

It was said that the ultimate fate for all Dragon Slayers was the transformation of the practitioner into a full dragon. This was rooted in the Dragon Seed (竜の種 Ryū no Tane) that grew within their bodies and was responsible for their transformation. This resulted in the process of Dragonification whereby their flesh started developing Dragon-like features such as scales. The ultimate end was their turn into a full Dragon with them typically unable to return to their human form.

Within Edolas, Dragon Slayer Magic had limitless functions and were valued as a priceless resource for everyday use.

Members

  • Irene Belserion : a red haired Queen of Dragnof from 400 years ago who was an enchanter that developed the art of Dragon Slaying magic. However, the Dragon Seed in her caused her to change into a dragon leading to her imprisonment by her people and leading to her going into exile. She later took the last name of Belserion after the dragon that was her kingdom's protector.
  • Acnologia : a male doctor whose town was destroyed by dragons 400 years ago thus sparking a hatred of all dragons where after becoming a Dragon Slayer he began exterminating the creatures. After having forgotten his own name, he took the name Acnologia after the Dragon that destroyed his town where the Dragon Seed caused him to change into a fearsome Black Dragon.
  • Elefseria : to combat the Five Dragon Gods, he taught himself Dragon Slayer magic where as a consequence of overusing his power he ultimately transformed into a dragon.
  • Natsu Dragneel : brother to Zeref Dragneel where the two lived around 400 years ago. He came to die alongside his parents from a dragon attack until he was revived as a powerful demon by his brother Zeref who looked to resurrect his sibling. Around this time, the world faced the threat of Acnologia and the young Natsu was left in the care of the dragon Igneel who came to be responsible for raising the youth. Igneel went out of his way to teach Natsu how to talk, write, and perform his own signature form of Lost Magic: Fire Dragon Slayer Magic; Igneel ultimately chose, like four other Dragons of that time period, to seal his damaged soul inside Natsu's body and leap four hundred years into the future, recover his strength with the future's high Ethernano concentrations and kill Acnologia.
  • Gajeel Redfox : a dark-haired male born over four hundred years ago, Gajeel was taught Iron Dragon Slayer Magic by Metalicana. During his tenure as Metalicana's child, he became affiliated with the four other Dragon Slayer children, and met with them several times a year when their foster parents got together for meetings, wherein he would frequently fight with Natsu, much to the young Wendy's chagrin. Gajeel, at some point after, then had his body used to house his foster father's damaged soul; Metalicana hid himself inside Gajeel's body to create antibodies that would stop Gajeel's natural Dragonization process. Gajeel was then sent forward in time four hundred years, awakening on July 7, X777, so that Metalicana's damaged soul could recover in the dense Ethernano atmosphere so that he could exit and attempt to someday kill Acnologia.
  • Wendy Marvell : a young short dark haired girl born over four hundred years ago, Wendy Marvell was orphaned at a tender age. She was adopted and raised by Grandeeney; during her tenure as Grandeeney's child, she became affiliated with the four other Dragon Slayer children, and met with them several times a year when their foster parents got together for meetings, wherein she would frequently beg Natsu and Gajeel to stop fighting.
  • Laxus Dreyar :
  • Erik :
  • Rogue Cheney : an orphan originally born over four hundred years ago, Rogue was raised by a Dragon known as Skiadrum, who taught him Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic; during his tenure as Skiadrum's child, he became affiliated with the four other Dragon Slayer children, and met with them several times a year when their foster parents got together for meetings, wherein he and Sting would respectively idolize Gajeel and Natsu. Skiadrum, like the other four Dragons he conspired with, ended up implanting his damaged soul in Rogue's body, and then used Rogue's body as a host to create anti-Dragonization antibodies. After this, Skiadrum manipulated Rogue's memories to erase this event, instead, he made it appear as though he was ill and Rogue had assisted in his timely death. From here, Rogue was sent four hundred years into the future via the Eclipse Gate, arriving on July 7, X777, so that his foster parent could use the Ethernano-dense atmosphere to also heal his soul and recover enough to possibly defeat Acnologia, alongside the other four wounded Dragons.
  • Sting Eucliffe : originally born four hundred years ago, Sting, an orphan, was raised by the Dragon Weisslogia, who taught him White Dragon Slayer Magic; during his tenure as Weisslogia's child, he became affiliated with the four other Dragon Slayer children, and met with them several times a year when their foster parents got together for meetings, wherein he and Rogue would respectively idolize Natsu and Gajeel. Sting subsequently became a host for his foster father's weakened soul, which allowed his Dragonization process to be halted due to the presence of new antibodies in his body. To ensure that Sting did not remember any of what had happened, Weisslogia implanted the memory that Sting had been forced to kill him and the results he would have actually achieved had such a thing been done. After the deed was finished, Sting and four other young Dragon Slayers were sent four hundred years into the future via the Eclipse Gate, arriving on July 7, X777, so as to allow Weisslogia time to recover in the Ethernano-dense world in the hopes that he, and the other damaged Dragons, could heal enough to stop Acnologia.
  • God Serena : a male implanted with eight different Dragon Lacrima into his body, granting him the powers over those elements as a 2nd Generation Dragon Slayer and in the process was recognized as the strongest Mage on the continent.
