History
The Hirogen were a humanoid species that were native to the Delta Quadrant in the Milky Way Galaxy. (Episode: Hunters)
In 2374, the U.S.S. Voyager encountered the Hirogen after the crew came upon the ancient abandoned communication network which they intended to use as a means of sending a message to the Alpha Quadrant. Upon sighting the vessel, the Hirogen acted aggressively and attempted to force the Starfleet vessel to depart. (Episode: Message in a Bottle) The encounter led to the Hirogen hunters sensing a worthy prey in the U.S.S. Voyager and came to attack them again when they came upon another sensor relay. (Episode: Hunters)
In 2377, one of the final confrontations between Voyager and a Hirogen war party is so devastating to both sides that a cease-fire was reached, an unprecedented event in the entirety of Hirogen history. The Alpha in charge of the Hirogen raiding party had initially invaded Voyager in the hopes of obtaining holographic technology; and, though he fell during the combat, Janeway delivered the technology to his successor. The Alpha acknowledged that, by chasing 'prey' across the entire Quadrant, the Hirogen people were losing all cultural and national unity and would eventually be overcome by other species. By creating holographic hunts, with the safety systems off, they could continue to have lethal and challenging hunts while remaining united in a single portion of space. Unfortunately, the Hirogen program their holographic prey too well—the hologram warriors are programmed to learn from each "death", and their combat abilities increase exponentially. This eventually reaches the logical conclusion of the prey becoming the predators, and it is only the intervention of the Voyager crew that prevents the Hirogen's utter extermination.
Overview
As a species, they were dedicated to the concept of hunting worthy prey. The stronger the prey meant a better and more challenging hunt for the Hirogen. Hunting new species drew the envy of other members of their kind with this being the case with men whilst women sought out successful hunters. It was for this reason that some hunters were unwilling to share in this glory. (Episode: Hunters)
Prey that were unusual or worthy had their bodies prepared to be taken as relics by the hunter. (Episode: Hunters)
Technology
Their vessels were able to go into stalking mode allowing them to sneak up on their prey. (Episode: Hunters)
One weapon in their arsenal was a subnucleonic beam that was used to scan and disrupt systems which disabled a target in order for them to capture them with a tractor beam. (Episode: Hunters)
They came to claim a series of sensor relay stations that were abandoned in the Delta Quadrant. It was possible to use the network to send messages from one quadrant of the galaxy to another. (Episode: Message in a Bottle) This was due to the fact that they extended all the way into the Alpha Quadrant. It was believed that the Hirogen used them as a means of communication. These stations made use of a quantum singularity as a power source. As such, the relays generated as much energy per minute as that produced by a typical star did in a year. (Episode: Hunters)
