Biography
Origin
Hiruzen Sarutobi (Japanese: 猿飛 ヒルゼン, Hepburn: Sarutobi Hiruzen) was a male human ninja born as the son of Sasuke Sarutobi (猿飛サスケ, Sarutobi Sasuke) where the clan lived in the village of Konohagakure in the Ninja World. The Sarutobi clan were among the first clans that came to settle in the newly created hidden leaf village. After the establishment of the village, he came to be among the first generation of shinobi born of the hidden leaf. In his youth, he was noted to had struck a friendship with Danzō Shimura. During this time, he was placed alongside Homura Mitokado, and Koharu Utatane under the tutelage of Tobirama Senju. Hiruzen's talent as a shinobi later led to him being marked for further training by the village's leader the First Hokage Hashirama Senju. Unknown to Sarutobi, this success caused a sense of envy and jealously in his friend Danzō Shimura thus creating a one-sided rivalry where he sought to surpass Hiruzen. Later on, his team leader Tobirama Senju came to succeed his brother and became the Second Hokage of the hidden leaf. Afterwards, the ninja world was engulfed by the First Shinobi World War where Second Hokage Tobirama Senju led the village. He came to personally lead a team consisting of Hiruzen Sarutobi, Danzō Shimura, Homura, Koharu, Danzō, Kagami Uchiha, and Torifu Akimichi. During the mission, they cam to be pursued by the Kinkaku Force of [[[Kumogakure]] where they needed a distraction to allow the team to escape. Hiruzen would volunteer to sacrifice himself for his comrades by being a decoy and thought that he had the best chance of surviving the encounter. However, Tobirama instead decided to take on the role and knew that it would result in his death. He would name Hiruzen to be his successor and appointed him to be the Third Hokage just before leaving thus allowing the rest of the team to survive. Returning to the village, he took the mantle of Hokage where according to one account he entrusted Danzō with dealing in certain matters in the shadows. This allowed for the creaton of the Root who served as Shimura's personal enforcers in responding to threats to the village. For years, Hiruzen would ignore the more dubious practices of the organisation all for the sake of maintaining harmony within the hidden leaf village. Afterwards, Hiruzen would marry with his wife being Biwako Sarutobi who gave him several children one of whom became an Anbu and another son being named Asuma Sarutobi.
Later on, he came to note that Naruto was in danger of failing his Academy graduation exam once again. This led to him fearing for the young Uzumaki's future and decided to place Iruka Umino as the boy's instructor. He reasoned that Iruka and Naruto shared a common experience in the fact that the pair had lost their parents. Thus, he advised Umino to be compassionate to Uzumaki where they could bond over the similar loss they experienced in their lives.
Overview
Personality and attributes
Such was his talent that he came to be regarded as the God of Shinobi (忍の神, Shinobi no Kami, English TV: The Supreme Shinobi). His sheer knowledge of ninjutsu techniques led to him also being referred to as the Professor (プロフェッサー, Purofessā). After being appointed leader of the village, he came to be given the title of Third Hokage (三代目火影, Sandaime Hokage, literally meaning: Third Fire Shadow).
He was a firm believer in the philosophy of the Will of Fire (火の意志, Hi no Ishi) that held all the people of Konoha as a family and that duty of the Hokage was protecting their well-being.
Hiruzen would lament his leadership skills as he thought he lacked the strength of the First Hokage to govern the village. It was this reason that he came to split the duties of the Hokage between himself and Danzō who was tasked with performing more extreme actions to deal with threats to the village.
He was noted to had later married a medical-nin by the name of Biwako Sarutobi (猿飛ビワコ, Sarutobi Biwako). The couple were noted to have had a son named Asuma Sarutobi (猿飛アスマ, Sarutobi Asuma) who came to be a skilled jonin.
From another child, he came to be a grandfather with this grandchild being named Konohamaru Sarutobi (猿飛木ノ葉丸, Sarutobi Konohamaru).
In his youth, he came to forge a friendship with Danzō Shimura (志村ダンゾウ, Shimura Danzō) where the two often played together as children. They kept each other company as they grew up where they trained and served on teams together. However, as they grew older, a rift began to form between the two former friends where they disagreed on their approaches to situations. It was said that he and Danzō were the opposite of one another as Sarutobi operated out in the light whilst Shimura kept in the shadows. Part of this stemmed from Danzō's sense of envy and feeling that he was left in the shadow of Hiruzen.
Powers and abilities
Hiruzen Sarutobi was a human who had the ability to manipulate chakra which he could use to achieve various feats. From a young age, Hiruzen was marked as a natural prodigy in the ninja arts leading to his moniker as the God of Shinobi.
Among the techniques known to him included:
- Summoning Technique (口寄せの術, Kuchiyose no Jutsu) : He came to make a contract with the Monkey King: Enma (猿猴王・猿魔, Enkōō: Enma) who became his personal summons.
- Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall (土遁・土流壁, Doton: Doryūheki) :
- Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet (火遁・火龍炎弾 (Katon: Karyū Endan) :
- Shadow Clone Technique (影分身の術, Kage Bunshin no Jutsu) :
- Dead Demon Consuming Seal (屍鬼封尽, Shiki Fūjin) :
Hiruzen was a member of the influential Sarutobi Clan (猿飛一族, Sarutobi Ichizoku) who resided in the village of Konohagakure (木ノ葉隠れの里, Konohagakure no Sato, English TV: "Village Hidden in the Leaves" or "Hidden Leaf Village", literally meaning: Village Hidden by Tree Leaves). After being named Hokage (火影, literally meaning: Fire Shadow), he came to be responsible for leading the hidden leaf village and protecting it from harm.
