History

The Fourth Holy Grail War began in the 1990's where it was supervised by Risei Kotomine from the Church. During this competition, the events of the previous Grail Wars began to take effect. Among these included the Einzbern family create a homunculus called Irisveil von Einzbern in order to house the spirit of Jubstacheit von Einzbern who would serve as the vessel for the Grail. In addition, they took into their home the mercenary mage killer Kiritsugu Emiya as their representative who intended to use the wish granted by the relic to end suffering in the world. Similarly, the Tohsaka family forged an alliance with the Church in securing the relic and thus Tokiomi Tohsaka took Kirei Kotomine as his apprentice as part of a joint alliance in securing this goal. Eventually, the competition began with the other five masters being selected though the corruption caused by Angra Mainyu led to the summoning of improper servants such as Gilles de Rais. During the course of the war, Kirei Kotomine became corrupted by power and betrayed his mentor Tokiomi and took his servant Gilgamesh as his own. After the other Masters were defeated, the final confrontation saw Kiritsugu battling Kotomine with the latter being defeated in the final battle. However, this came at the cost of his life Irisveil who became the vessel for the Grail but he shockingly discovered that it would not grant his wish. Thus, he betrayed his patrons in the Einzbern's and ordered his Servant Arturia Pendragon to destroy it which she was forced to do so against her will. The contents of the Grail later spilled out and ravaged a section of Fuyuki City that killed five hundred people with 134 buildings destroyed in the process. Among the only survivors of the Fourth Holy Grail War were Kiritsugu Emiya, a resurrected Kirei Kotomine and Waver Velvet with the Servant Gilgamesh exposed to the contents of the Grail that allowed him to remain in the world even though the magical conflict had ended. For his actions, the Einzbern's barred Kiritsugu from returning to their home thus preventing him from seeing his daughter Illyaviel von Einzbern that his child and Irisveil's. Thus, he remained in Fuyuki City and raised a child that he saved from the destruction who was named Shirou Emiya.

Due to the events at Fuyuki City, the Fifth Holy Grail War began ten years prematurely due to the failure in granting a wish to the selected winner in the previous conflict.

Overview

The relation between a Master and Servant was achieved through the creation of Command Spells or Seals that were gifted to the selected Master from the Grail. These manifested on the right hand of the individual where they appeared as red elaborate tattoos. Typically, this saw three such spells given to the Master in question that allowed their mana to pass to the Servant that kept them in the world. With the seals, the Master could given a command to the Servant that compelled them to achieve an act such as instant teleportation to their location or committing an act that the Servant would not normally do of their own free will. The use of such an order came at the cost of the spell thus restricting their use as they were normally used as a last resort. When all the spells were used, the Master was discharged from the war and their Servant was free to engage in any act that they desired. Similarly, if the Servant was destroyed in the battle than the command spells disappeared from their Master's hand.
