Alistair was a male human born in 9:10 Dragon where he was the son of King Maric Theirin and an Elhven woman named Fiona on the continent of Thedas.

- Alistair was created by BioWare where he was voiced by actor Steve Valentine and featured in the setting of Dragon Age.
- Writer David Gaider on Twitter stated that the character was named after actor Alistair Appleton.
- In an interview, it was revealed that the original character of Alistair was to be a grizzled Grey Warden veteran by original lead designer James Ohlen. This was then changed by Gaider who drew inspiration from the characters of Xander Harris and Malcolm Reynolds.
- Originally, it was planned for Nathan Fillion to voice the character but the writers required someone with an English accent and decided on someone else as a result.
