Biography

Deku and All Might in Boku no Hero Academia v1 #1.

Toshinori Yagi (Japanese: 八木俊典, Hepburn: Yagi Toshinori?) was a blonde male inhabitant of the world following the emergence of Quirks. However, unlike others at this point, Toshinori was actually born Quirkless that meant he had no powers. This was until he encountered a Nana Shimura who was the 7th bearer of One for All who took Toshinori under her wing and passed the Quirk to him. She was eventually killed at the hands of the villainous All For One but passed her successors training to her old friend Gran Torino. Gran Torino then began to teach at U.A. for a year and served as Yagi's home room teacher as he helped him come to grips with One for All. Due to Yagi's strength, much of the training involved combat in order to help him develop into a hero whereupon he took the name All-Might (オールマイト Ōru Maito?). As a promise to his close friend Nana, Gran Torino continued training Toshinori in her place. However, Toshinori was distraught after the death of his master and was unable to train to his potential. Thoughts of revenge plagued Toshinori's mind and he wished to avenge Nana, who he saw as a true hero. Gran Torino reminded Toshinori that his enemy is a man who's walked the earth for over a hundred years. Toshinori cried while saying his master gave up everything to raise One For All's next torchbearer and admits he thought of her as his own mother. Gran Torino recommended him to train in the United States after he graduated so All For One could not reach him and to gain experience as a hero. He reminded Toshinori why Nana sacrificed herself and restored his resolve. That spring, Toshinori graduated from U.A. and prepared to cross the ocean. Before he departed, Toshinori reminded himself of his master's trademark smile. He shaped his hair and donned what would become his own signature smile for the first time as All Might.

Whilst operating in the United States, Toshinori came to be involved in numerous superhero activities as he battled villains in the country. During one such occasion, he went to the scene of an explosion at a laboratory where he saved the scientists present at the scene. This led to him encounter David Shield who became impressed at the Japanese hero. Shield noted that All-Might’s clothes were damaged in the incident and offered to make him a hero costume to better aid him in the field. This cemented the two’s friendship as they began to work with one another. David often accompanied All-Might into the field where he produced various equipment for Toshinori and aided him in stopping villains.

Eventually, Toshinori decided to return back to Japan where his career experienced a rise in fame. This saw him go through the Bronze, Silver and Golden ages of his career with him quickly becoming the Symbol of Peace as well as the No. 1 Hero. Standing at the top, he came to inspire a new age of Pro Heroes with this seeing a change in the country that began to see a drop in crime which brought about an age of peace. Criminal activities dropped to below 6% due to All-Might's presence with the biggest threat remaining in the shadows in the form of All For One. Around this time, he was approached by a hero who was a fan of All-Might and wanted to be his sidekick. With his ability to see into the future, Sir Nighteye wanted to operate alongside All-Might who was reluctant at taking on a partner at the time. However, he eventually accepted and Sir Nighteye quickly became the brains of Toshinori's operations during the peak of All-Might's career.

Around 6 years ago, he confronted the villain All For One with this battle being done so in secret. During the brutal fight, he managed to badly wound the villain who similarly hit All Might with a grievous injury in his stomach. The injury destroyed his stomach and damaged his lungs requiring Yagi to go through many operations to stabilise the wound but it could never be repaired. Thus, the fight had left a permanent injury on All Might that also reduced his ability to be a hero for long periods of time. During this moment, Sir Nighteye used his Quirk to see into All-Might's future which showed that he would perish in battle against a supervillain. In horror, he begged for All-Might to abandon being a hero so that he could live and avoid this future. However, this went against All-Might's ideals with this started a rift between the hero and his sidekick as the two parted ways. Afterwards, All-Might kept the circumstances of the fight and his injury a secret from other people as he believed it would affect his image in being the Symbol of Peace for them.

Whilst in his civilian form, he went out for shopping when he witnessed a robbery by a villain made of sludge. He pursued the villain into a tunnel where the sludge creature had captured a young boy by the name of Izuku Midoriya. The villain had attempted to take over the child's body but All-Might saved him. While the young man recovers, All Might encases the villain inside a couple of empty bottles, in order to take him to the authorities. When Izuku awakens, he finds that All Might has signed his Hero Analysis for the Future notebook and thanks him profusely. All Might prepares to leave, but the young fanboy holds on to All Might after he leaps high into the air. At first, All Might tries to shake him off but stops after agreeing that Izuku would die if he dropped him in mid-air. He is forced to land and tries to leave again, but Izuku questions him on whether he can become a hero without a Quirk. Before answering, All Might's time in his muscle form comes to an end and he reverts to his true form, shocking Izuku. All Might reveals to the surprised young man that he was injured in battle five years ago and can only stay in his hero form for a short time. He goes on to tell Izuku that professionals must always put their lives at stake to save the day and thus cannot openly say whether it is possible to be a Hero without a Quirk as it may not be possible. All Might told Izuku that if he cared about saving people then he could always go on to become a policeman, as in that way he would be responsible for putting the villains in jail. He tells Izuku that it is not bad to dream, but warns him not to obscure the facts and then leaves.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Toshinori Yagi's form depended on which state he had taken due to his abilities. When he was empowered, he was a very large man with an equally-muscular and well-defined physique. As a superhero, Yagi came to take the name of All Might (オールマイト Ōru Maito?) where protected others in the world. He came to be referred to by his title as the world's Symbol of Peace (平和の象徴 Heiwa no Shōchō?).

It was claimed that there was always a smile on his face even when things were bad. This was regardless of the foes he faced or troubles he encountered with him saving everyone with a smile on his face. When he was young, he told his mentor Nana Shimura that he wanted people to have a smile on their faces with the only way for that to happen was if they had a symbol of peace to look up to in life. As such, he was resolved in making himself that symbol to inspire the people of the world.

Originally, he felt that his home country of Japan needed a hero to inspire them. This saw him running towards that goal at full speed as he wanted to be a beacon of hope and a warning to villains. On that day, Toshinori swore that's what he would become in his life and never looked back from that point onwards. As All Might, he embodied all the traits of a superhero with him being charismatic, courageous, selfless, kind-hearted, and protective hero. The Symbol of Peace became such a deterrent against crime that villains were largely discouraged by his presence in society with him single-handedly bringing near-absolute stability throughout Japan.

After encountering David Shield, Toshinori forged a close friendship with the American inventor. The two were considered best friends to the point that David’s daughter Melissa came to encounter Toshinori as an uncle and referred to him as ‘Uncle Might’. Despite their close ties, All-Might never revealed to David the true nature of his Quirk One For All or that he could pass it on to another person. He did this because he feared that this knowledge would have made the Shield family targets to All-Might’s enemies, particularly to All For One.

For a time, he came to believe that there was no place in the hero world for a person without Quirks. As such, he told Izuku Midoriya that he could never become a hero if he had no Quirk and that he had to choose more attainable dreams. However, he felt shamed when he saw the Quirkless boy risk his life for his friend Bakugo when he was captured by the sludge villain. This convinced All Might of the greatness and heroic spirit inside Midoriya which became the reason why he decided the boy would become his successor.

When he started as a hero, he initially did not want a sidekick but relented on this and partnered up with Sir Nighteye who was a big fan of All-Might. The two worked together for many years with it said that Sir Nighteye was the brains of their operation.

After his retirement, All Might dedicated the rest of his life to training Izuku entrusting him with the information about the other One For All users and their Quirks.

Powers and abilities

Toshinori Yagi was originally a human who was actually born Quirkless (無個性, Mu Kosei, lit. "No Individuality") meaning that he had no powers in a society filled with superpowered individuals. Through Shimura, he came to inherit his own Quirk that was known as One For All (ワン・フォー・オール Wan Fō Ōru?) with it being unique and keyed to the users DNA with it being derived from an older Quirk called All For One. He was in fact the 8th bearer of the Quirk where it was expected that he would pass it on to a new user eventually. This Quirk stockpiled an enormous amount of raw power that provided him great strength and physical abilities such as incredible endurance and durability as well as speed. He was able to hit with incredible force or jump across great distances with a single leap. According to Gran Torino, All Might in particular had a strong body that allowed him to master One For All much faster than previous users. Such was his proficiency with the Quirk that he came to be regarded as the world's most powerful person. Such was his strength that he could not only defeat a villain with a single punch but completely change the weather subsequently. Such punches also had the power to completely destroy several city blocks from the wind pressure it created.

Following a battle with All For One, Toshinori was badly wounded by the villain who left a great wound in his stomach. The effects of this injury meant that he was no longer able to maintain his form as All-Might permanently. In fact, he could only maintain his strong All-Might form for a short period of time with this typically being around 3 hours a day. Otherwise, he reverted to his more scrawny lanky civilian guise. Similar to his predecessor, he was able to pass the Quirk onto another person which required them to eat portions of his hair that was specially prepared for consumption. It could not be taken by force but could be transferred by force. After this was done, then One For All had left his body with only the faint embers of it remaining in him which meant that it had a limited supply that was ultimately capable of being exhausted until it was completely gone from him.

Using his Quirk, he came to develop a number of techniques that included:

  • California Smash (カリフォルニア スマッシュ Kariforunia Sumasshu?) : a move where he performed frontal somersaults to build his moment with an air pressure attack released on the mash.
  • Carolina Smash (カロライナスマッシュ Karoraina Sumasshu?) : a move whereby All Might ran towards an enemy while keeping his hands in a cross position then proceeded with a downwards cross chop to the enemy's head.
  • Texas Smash (テキサススマッシュ Tekisasu Sumasshu?) : this consisted of a straight and powerful punch which was strong enough to create large amounts of wind pressure. It had the ability to level a city with this capable of being done with a single punch. Texas Smash was able to be used to send a powerful burst of wind that could scatter the body of a liquid based foe.
  • Detroit Smash (デトロイトスマッシュ Detoroito Sumasshu?) : this was a super-move whereby he threw a punch that produced a massive amount of wind pressure that created powerful updrafts of wind and could alter localised weather to lead it to start raining afterwards.
  • Oklahoma Smash (オクラホマスマッシュ Okurahoma Sumasshu?) : allowed him to whirl around whilst his enemies latched onto him whereby he span with enough force that it forced them to release him and sent them flying through
  • United States of Smash (ユナイテッド ステーテス オヴ スマッシュ Yunaiteddo Sutētesu Ovu Sumasshu?) : All Might's ultimate attack whereby he used all his power to deliver an incredibly powerful punch that was strong enough to reverberate across the surrounding area. It was used to incapacitate only the most dangerous and most powerful of enemies.

Originally, All-Might wore ordinary clothing which regularly got destroyed in the field. However, upon encounter David Shield, he was provided specially made costumes that were made of material able to withstand damage and his Quirk’s abilities. Shield was noted to had crafted the various costumes of All-Might including his Bronze, Silver and Golden age designs.
