History

Quirks (個性 Kosei?, lit. "Individuality") were a unique genetic phenomena that suddenly manifested in the world in the modern age. Its origin was unknown except that it began with a child developing a superhuman ability to emanate light with numerous more births around the world developing other powers. The ability to gain powers led to the emergence of superheroes and supervillains among the population as 80% of people developing a Quirk.

In Japan, a mysterious crime lord emerged to be a powerful supervillain who operated under the name of All For One. He came to dominate the criminal underworld and was responsible for killing Nana Shimura. Unknown to him though, a young hero named Toshinori Yagi travelled to America where he trained to become the hero called All-Might. Upon his return to Japan, he made his way to becoming the Number 1 hero in the country and began defeating the Quirk wielding supervillains that had terrorised society. Ultimately, this culminated in a battle against All For One with both the villain and All-Might suffering from severe injuries from the encounter.

To better study Quirks, a community of scientists established I-Island that was a mobile city that moved across waters and was effectively its own country. This provided an enclave where Quirks could be studied and equipment for heroes could be designed. Scientists were required to stay on the mobile city along with their families to protect them from being targets of villains.

All for One with his ally the doctor Kyudai Garaki looked to combine Quirks to create supersoldiers that served them. This led to the creation of Nomus that were humans genetically modified to possess multiple Quirks with most lacking intelligence.

The world of Pro Heroes led to organised crime diminishing with this including the Shie Hassaikai Yakuza losing its power. In desperation, Kai Chisaki sought a means of restoring their power and intended to use the unique Quirk of his Boss's granddaughter Eri. After taking control of the gang, he conducted inhumane experiments on Eri in order to create a Quirk destroying drug with the intention of selling it to villains whilst selling the cure to the heroes. This was with the goal of profiting immensely from the monopoly he had created thus changing the face of society.

Overview

In appearance, Quirks was a genetic trait that mysteriously began to emerge among humanity around the world.

Mutations were known to occur among Quirks whereby a child gained a new ability that was completely different from either of their parents. In some cases, certain children were known to lack a Quirk entirely and thus were ordinary humans.

During the initial years of Quirks, a practice that came to people was the use of Quirk Marriages. This was based on the fact that children of two Quirk holders were able to inherit the abilities of both parents. It was initially common as certain bearers forcibly married another in a type of arranged marries though these were unethical. These were done to forcibly breed a child with stronger Quirks.

Special schools were established in countries to help train the next generation of heroes. A requirement for entry into these schools was the person possessing a Quirk.
