Biography

Amiko Kobayashi

She and her mother came to be caught in-between a battle between the X-Men and a dragon. This saw Amiko's mother being mortally wounded with Wolverine coming to promise to look after her young daughter as if she were his own child. Since the dragon had arrived in Tokyo from the fabricated planet Battleworld and had somehow grown to its monstrous size, Wolverine felt partly responsible and accepted his burden of honor. Thus, Amiko came to fall into the care of Logan who looked to raise the young girl. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #181) As a full-time X-Man, Wolverine was unable to care for Amiko personally, but he did foster her with his fiancée Mariko Yashida. Amiko lived with Mariko for a few years, enjoying the plush life that the head of Clan Yashida was able to provide where she saw Logan on rare occasions. (Kitty Pryde and Wolverine v1 #5) Amiko also got to meet Kitty Pryde. Shadowcat was brainwashed by Ogun when she came to Japan. After Kitty broke her conditioning, she hid Amiko and Mariko from Ogun, who had come to kill them. Yukio was then able to get Amiko and her mother to a safe house. Following Ogun's defeat, Amiko went for ice cream with Kitty, Logan and Mariko. (Kitty Pryde and Wolverine v1 #6)

Ultimately, he decided to leave Amiko in the care of his fiancé Mariko Yashida until her death. (Wolverine v2 #80) When Mariko was assassinated by the Hand, however, no legal plans existed to care for Amiko, and she was placed in the Japanese foster care system. Logan assumed all was well, but the truth was that Amiko was living with abusive people. Furthermore, she clung to the memory of her savior "The Good Samurai" which resulted in her being bullied at school and distancing herself from her peers. After losing his healing factor, Logan thought he was dying and he decided to take care of his unfinished business but he also wanted to say a final goodbye to Amiko. After he arrived in Japan, he discovered that the money he had been sending to his daughter was being stolen by her foster parents and he decided to fix this situation. One night, Logan got Amiko out, with Amiko believing he was a ninja sent by her protector "The Good Samurai", he then avenged his daughter by making her abusive foster parents run away in shame. He then asked Yukio to take over guardianship, with financial support from the Silver Samurai, now the head of Clan Yashida. In return, Logan gave back the Honor Sword of Clan Yashida and then said his goodbyes to his daughter.(Wolverine v2 #82)

The Hand kept her for an exchange when both Wolverine and Shingen in his Silver Samurai arrived to rescue her. During this time, Logan managed to free Amiko but Shingen was captured. Afterwards, Amiko was taken to safety in order to decide on their next course of action as Kobayashi wanted to free her boyfriend. To prevent Amiko from leaving, Yukio had her room filled with sleeping gas to prevent her from following her and Logan as they went to save Harada. However, Kobayashi had a gas mask and snuck out to follow the pair as she was determined to save Shingen. (Wolverine v2 #301)

Alternate Versions

  • In Wolverine Days of Future Past v1 #1 (1997), an alternate version of Amiko Kobyashi was shown in a variant future timeline. This Amiko was sent by Wolverine to the care of the Silver Samurai in order for her to be safe. However, the Samurai was made the new emperor of Japan. Thus, the newly christened Emperor Harada feared for Amiko being the target of both Wolverine's enemies and his own. As such, he faked Kobyashi's death and sent her away to live in secret where she was trained under a number of martial arts masters so that she could protect herself in the future. By adulthood, she became a ninja master who responded only to the name Midnight after abandoning her birth name. Her uncle Emperor Harada later dispatched her to infiltrate the ranks of the Hellfire Club in order to bring them down from the inside.
