Biography

Anaconda in Captain America v1 #310.

Blanche Sitznski

Roxxon outfitted and trained Sidewinder, Anaconda, Black Mamba, and Death Adder as the Serpent Squad where they were sent them to find as well as bring the Serpent Crown to them. To this end, Roxxon placed an oil derrick in the Pacific and used it as a base. Once the Society found the Crown they set off underwater explosions to bring it to the surface; this had the unintended side effect of damaging the derrick. When the hero Stingray investigated underwater, Anaconda threw him back onto the derrick. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #65) At that Pacific Roxxon Oil derrick, the Serpent Squad revealed themselves to an investigating the Thing Ben Grimm, demanding that he surrender. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #64) After forcing Grimm's surrender and confining him, the Squad returned underwater, where Anaconda found the crown and gave it to Sidewinder. The Thing and Stingray soon escaped and returned with the Inhuman Triton; Anaconda, with Mamba's help, nearly defeated Grimm before a blast from Stingray knocked her out. A depth charge dropped by the fleeing Sidewinder accidentally buried Black Mamba and the other two serpents in an underwater landslide. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #65) Anaconda managed to unbury the other two serpents and they escaped together. Anaconda, Black Mamba, and Death Adder broke into the Long Island Zoo, with Black Mamba killing a guard, Harry. Their employer wanted them to steal a Stark microscanner which could be used to power a weapon, but their information on the location of the control room proved wrong. They released several zoo animals to create a diversion and cover their search; finding the control room, Mamba grabbed the scanner and inserted it into the weapon. She tested it on a zoo executive, apparently killing him as well, but Iron Man intervened. Death Adder grabbed a hostage while Anaconda grabbed Iron Man, but he sent an electrical pulse through her arms and knocked her out. Iron Man soon put the others down and reclaimed the sensor. (Iron Man v1 #160)

Geoffrey Wilder hired Sidewinder and hist first attempt at an Serpent Society including Anaconda, Cobra, Diamondback, Puff Adder and Rattler to kill Tony Stark in Los Angeles. They attacked him at a scrapyard, but Stark escaped their first attack and quickly put together some weapons. (Iron Man Legacy v1 #7) The Serpent Society surrounded the hut Stark was hiding in and were surprised when Stark blew it up, knocking out all but Anaconda and Sidewinder. The latter threatened Stark while the former tried to crush him only to get knocked out by an electrical charge released from Stark's chestplate. (Iron Man Legacy v1 #8) Later on, Anaconda, Black Mamba, and Death Adder broke into Sidewinder's apartment. Their target was not home, so they decided to sit and wait for him. (Captain America v1 #307) While rifling through Sidewinder's belongings, Black Mamba found and showed the other two a series of files on them and several other snake themed criminals, including Princess Python, Asp, Cobra, and Constrictor. Sidewinder returned home and interrupted them, he teleported away, donned his costume, and returned. Anaconda demanded the money he owed them from their first job together ($10,000 each), and Sidewinder retrieved it from his safe with about 20% added interest from investments he'd made with the money. He then asked the trio to stay and listen to his proposal for an original criminal operation, which would make the money they just got seem like subway fare. (Captain America v1 #308) Anaconda visited the Shamrock Bar in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and told the Constrictor that an associate of hers had a work offer for him; he accompanied her out. (Captain America v1 #309)

At a posh midtown Manhattan hotel, Sidewinder had invited several serpent-themed mercenaries to attend the organizational meeting for the Serpent Society. Those present were Sidewinder, Black Mamba, Death Adder, Princess Python, Cottonmouth, Diamondback, Constrictor, Bushmaster, Cobra, Asp, Rattler, and Anaconda. Sidewinder's pitch was to mimic the heroes and to band together as a united group. He had spent the previous nine months laying the groundwork for his new group, and promised a guaranteed pay scale, insurance, medical plans, pensions, greater access to tools and data, and, thanks to Sidewinder's teleportational abilities, no fear of long-term imprisonment. All but one attendee agreed to join; Constrictor refused and left. To test their ability to be team players, Sidewinder split the group into three sections, and set each group out in a van to complete a different project. Anaconda, Rattler, and Cobra went to the abandoned Brand Long Island complex where Brand's mutagenics department had created Sidewinder and his original Serpent Squad. Captain America interrupted and Anaconda told the others to finish loading and take off; Rattler and Cobra escaped with the equipment. Anaconda nearly choked Captain America unconscious, but he used his shield to knock her out. Sidewinder quickly freed Anaconda from jail, and that evening she beat Constrictor into unconsciousness while Cobra watched. (Captain America v1 #310) Following the successful completion of all three tasks, the group reconvened in their new headquarters, the Serpent Citadel. Seeking to advertise the group, Sidewinder broke them into teams of two and sent them to contact all the major criminal and subversive organizations in America. Among the potential contactees were the Maggia, Zodiac, Secret Empire, Kingpin, AIM, and Hydra. Asp and Cottonmouth made contact with the Kingpin in Manhattan, while Diamondback and Bushmaster made contact with AIM's inner council (and were hired to assassinate MODOK). The make-up of the other groups and who each contacted is unrevealed. (Captain America v1 #311) Teamed to investigate likely hiding spots of M.O.D.O.K's, Anaconda and Cobra were ordered to New Jersey after another team located M.O.D.O.K. Diamondback took charge of the Society members and they headed in to mall he was hiding in, though Anaconda took offense at Diamondback's take-charge attitude. After a 'gas leak' announcement arranged by Captain America emptied the mall, the team cornered M.O.D.O.K. but Anaconda was quickly knocked out by him. (Captain America v1 #313)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Powers and abilities

As a result of bioengineering at the hands of the Roxxon Oil Company, Anaconda possesses a variety of superhuman attributes.

Anaconda possesses gills gained through surgical placement that allow her to extract oxygen from the water to breathe. She is able to survive and breathe while underwater indefinitely, as well as on land.

Anaconda's arms are normally two feet in length from wrist to armpit and her legs are normally 35 inches in length from ankle to hipbone. However, the bioengineering process she underwent grants her the ability to elongate her limbs to one and a half times their normal length. When doing so, the muscle tissue of her limbs gorge with blood and swell to many times their normal size, thereby giving them the appearance of large snakes. Her limbs are capable of generating up to 125 pounds of pressure per square inch, which is enough force to deform a steel tube two feet in diameter and one inch thick.

The entire skeletal structure of Anaconda's arms and legs has been replaced by artificial Adamantium alloy-based bones in the basic configuration of a snake's bodily skeleton.

Notes

  • Anaconda was created by Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio where she made her first appearance in Marvel Two-in-One v1 #64 (June, 1980).
