Biography

Anna Kyoyama.

Anna Kyoyama (Japanese: 恐山 アンナ, Hepburn: Kyōyama Anna) was a Japanese female who was born in Aomori, Japan on July 22, 1985 where she was abandoned as a little girl as she had the power to unwillingly see into the minds of other people. She came to be taken in by Kino Asakura (麻倉木乃 Asakura Kino) who raised the girl as she had the ability to master the arts of being an Itako. Her talents led to the Asakura family later deciding to set up Yoh Asakura in an arranged marriage with Anna Kyoyama in order to keep the family bloodline strong. However, Anna's inability to control her Reishi meant she could not help pick up the negative emotions from people around her. Hearing their thoughts, she began to hate humans and involuntarily began to manifest Oni as a result. To avoid this, she restricted her movements by confining herself to her room and avoided going out as much as possible. In 1995, she was 10 years old when she was to meet her fiancée who was travelling via train to Mt. Osore. Yoh was accompanied by the spirit Matamune (マタムネ) who was also going to visit Kino Asakura when he came to encounter Anna by a store. She came to warn him to leave as she had no intention of marrying him and left the scene. It was then that an Oni manifested that attacked Yoh who was only saved by the timely intervention of Matamune. At first, Yoh came to mistakenly believe that Anna had deliberately set the Oni on him but came to learn that she had done so unintentionally as they emerged against her will due to the negative emotions she experienced from others. The creatures would not return unless they destroyed something and made Anna experience further despair. Later on, a second such creature that was a Naka-Oni emerged to attack Yoh who tried to fight it to protect people from being killed where upon seeing his determination Anna came to subconsciously call the Oni back to her. They arrived home after the oni ordeal and Yoh made a promise to her that they would go to the temple shrine and that he would free Anna from the oni. Anna agreed reluctantly, fearing the worst possible outcome. When they were at the temple, other people's loud thoughts and emotions overwhelmed Anna and she resummoned the Naka-Oni. Matamune knocked it down and went to Yoh who was supporting Anna who seemed to have a hard time breathing because of the oni using a lot of spiritual power. By absorbing the power of the other onis nearby, the Naka-Oni grew into an Oh-Oni, which was more powerful and could talk. The Oh-Oni kidnapped Anna and took her to Mount Osore to help it absorb the power of the lurking spirits. Meanwhile, Anna slipped into a trance after her power was forcefully drawn out of her. absorb power. Fearing that she could die of exhaustion or loss of Furyoku, Yoh decided that this had to end once and for all, so using Matamune's necklace as a medium, Matamune was sacrificed and he became a sword similar to the final form of the merged Harusame and Futunomitama. During the fight, Anna was finally able to overcome the oni's control, and Yoh was able to beat it. They were able to beat the oni and Anna was free from the curse; unfortunately, Matamune was gone and the only thing remaining was a necklace with three black claws. Anna then grew to love Yoh because he was able to free her from the darkness that haunted her every day. From there on, she constantly trained him to become a better and stronger shaman as gratitude, and almost never gave him any reprieve.

Sometime later, Yoh came to injured from a recent shaman battle leading to Anna travelling to Tokyo to help administer his training. Carrying a bag with her, she entered into his hospital room where she revealed herself to be Yoh's fiancée and her intention to train Yoh so that he will be strong enough for the upcoming Shaman Fight. When Yoh refused, she forced him to see things her way when she notes how difficult it was for him to defeat Tao Ren and cited his recent injuries as proof. Yoh leaves to go to the bathroom and explains to Manta why he is so scared of Anna. Anna reveals that the Shaman Fight will be in Tokyo this time and proceeds to torture Yoh all summer. She also begins attending Shinra Private Academy, where Yoh also must endure her training regimen and remains scared of his wits at her constant presence. During Yoh's battle with Tao Jun and Lee Pyron, Anna demonstrated her skills as an itako when she decides the battle has gone on long enough and summons Pyron's master, Shamon. When a rickety old man was summoned, she came to worry about Yoh, but the master quickly surprises everyone by easily defeating Pyron. The gang watches Pyron and Jun leave as friends. When Tokageroh possesses Yoh, Anna was seen crying for the first time when she worried that Tokageroh may actually kill Yoh. However, when the ghost thanked Yoh, Anna returned to her former composure where she increased Yoh's training. When Umemiya Ryunosuke got up the next morning, Anna announced that Ryu was a shaman. She also summons Mosuke, into Ryu's body to reforge Harusame, and said that Ryu's debt was now settled.

At the age of 21, Anna has let her hair grow long, almost knee length, and keeps it in place with a white band instead of her red bandana. Instead of her black dress, she now wears a long dress with white, red and purple rippled heart shapes. After marrying Yoh, she came to take on his name and went by Anna Asakura (麻倉アンナ, Asakura Anna).

On the surface, Anna was shown to be a pragmatic person who seemed cold and harsh. She tended to be aggressive and decisive in her actions making her a strict instructor.

She was single-minded in her goal of becoming the wife of Yoh and ensuring his rise to Shaman King which would make herself the 'the Ultimate Shaman Queen'. Anna can be extremely possessive of Yoh, beating him up once when she thought that the Oracle Bell he brought home was another woman's pager.

Anna was raised by Yoh's grandmother Kino Asakura (麻倉木乃, Asakura Kino) who trained her to be an Itako to fully realise her innate potential.

From a young age, she came to have an arranged marriage set up between her and Yoh Asakura (麻倉 葉, Asakura Yō). After meeting him, she came to unquestionably love Yoh and explicitly admitted to it. This saw her being devoted to him and seeking to ensure that he became the Shaman King. As such, she had long considered herself to be his fiancé and wife where she was always by his side. On the night before Yoh left to America for the Shaman Fight, she asked Yoh if she could sleep with him, and Yoh said yes. Eventually, the two came to be formally be married with Anna becoming his wife. She and Yoh later came to have a child together who was a son that they named Hana Asakura (麻倉花, Asakura Hana).

Powers and abilities

Anna Kyoyama was a born a human who possessed tremendous spiritual ability and mastery of shamanic techniques with her holding an impressive level of strength. As a shaman, she was born with the natural ability to see into the minds of others and also meant that she could see spirits. In reality, she was a second generation Itako (イタコ) who were women that could summon spirits from heaven back to earth with this being a skill not even regular shamans were capable of accomplishing. She received her training from Yoh's grandmother who was also an Itako. Anna had with her 1080 beads that served as her medium to channel spirits which she did when entering into a trance-like state.

Among the spells known to her included:

  • Kuchiyose (口寄せ-, Invocation) : the ability to summon a spirit anytime and anywhere so long as she knew something about the person she was summoning.
  • Gouma Choubuku (降魔調伏) : a demon subjugation technique that Anna learnt from the Chō-Senjiryakketsu. By wrapping her rosary beads around her target, she was able to force demons back into their paper talisman forms.
  • Reishi (霊視) : an ability she was born with that enabled her to read the hearts and minds of others.
  • Okyō (御経, Okei) :
  • Juso-gaeshi (呪詛返し) : a curse reversal technique that allowed Anna to send the effects of a Furyoku attack back at the caster. Such was her skill that she was able to even reflect a spell from Asakura Hao back at him.

Kyoyama had the high level ability to nullify Furyoku that prevented Over Souls and other Furyoku-based techniques from making contact with the user rendering them useless.

Her own spirits that she could summon were a pair of shinigami named Zenki and Goki (前鬼 & 後鬼; Literally meaning Front and Rear) who were a type of familiars that served shamans.

She came to live at the Funbari Onsen (ふんばり温泉) where she later turned the inn into a public business that was run by the Asakura family.
