History

The Aragami were a race whose origins were deeply rooted within Japanese myth which was said to have started eons ago in a time when the lands of Japan were still young. In that age, the earth god Ashi-na-zuki along with his wife Te-na-zuki faced a dark time when the eight headed dragon known as Yamata-no-orochi began to devour each one of their many daughters leaving only one left who was the princess Kushinada. Their plea to save their last child was heard by Susano-O who agreed to help them slay the monster in exchange for their daughter's hand in marriage to which they agreed. With the parents aid, Susano-O prepared a great amount of sake (rice wine) and got Yamata-no-orochi drunk with it after which he battled the creature. In the conflict, Susano-O slew the beast with his sword and whereupon he married the princess Kushinada. These actions led to the demonic Aragami being kept in a sleep-like state for centuries where they were ultimately forgotton by humanity and the legend of Susano-O became simple myth. For thousands of years, the Aragami slept due to the legendary power of princess Kushinada and Susano-O's female descendants. A mysterious power was within this line of women whose death was capable of containing the Aragami. This continued until fifteen years ago when the latest line of descendants were born. However, these children were twins and the power was split between the two of them. To ensure their plans, the Aragami known as Orochi sought to eliminate the Kusanagi family who were part of a group that attempted to sacrifice the Kushinada in order to make the monsters fall into their slumber once again. The only survivor was a young baby boy named Mamoru Kusanagi who was spared by the Aragami to enact their plans. They implanted seven mitama into the child and turned him into an Aragami hybrid who was tasked with protecting the Kushinada. In Japan, the Terrestrial Administration Center had formed after they became aware of the existence of the Aragami and sought to battle the creatures to stop them from taking over the world.

This led to the Aragami awakening once more and began to invade Tokyo as a prelude to conquering the world itself. The only thing standing in their way was the hapless schoolgirl Momiji Fujimiya who was a descendant of the Princess Kushinada. Together with the National Land Management Bureau government agency as well as her protector Mamoru, the group battled against the ancient menace from the past once more.

Overview

In appearance, the Aragami were notable for having plant like properties which included magical blue seeds called mitama's that were capable of taking control of any living creature whereupon it was transformed into a monster that served the Aragami's cause. They were also capable of changing their shape and picking up the characteristics of creatures or plants they infected to serve their needs.

According to the TAC, the Aragami were a type of parasitic creature that was capable of infecting other lifeforms ranging from plants to animals. Once infection took place, the Aragami distorted the hosts cellular structure thus transforming it into a form more suiting for the parasite. It was believed that the Aragami forms that were seen in battle were actually a mutation of a hosts genetic structure. As such, it was possible to infect host organism with a form of plasmid which greatly weakened the Aragami itself. (Ep 2)

Aragami were ultimately weaker in the daylight when compared to darkness and thus struck more openly in the cover of the night. Despite their powers, they ultimately feared the blood of the Kushinada clan for if sacrificed, it meant that their entire race would be banished and enter an eternal sleep. (Ep 1)
