History
The Ark of Truth was created by the ancient Alterrans in their distant home galaxy during the time when the schism first erupted between their kind and the Ori on the matter of Ascension. It was created by the scientist Amelius who had hoped to use it against the assembled army of the Ori and thus end the bloodshed that would erupt. However, the Alterran council voted against this action as they believed in free will and did not entertain the brainwashing of others; even their enemies. It was decided that the device would never be used and it was abandoned on the world that the Alterrans had departed which would become known as Celestis.
Daniel Jackson became aware of the device through dreams that he had been experiencing and learnt that it was located in the Ori home galaxy. After taking the Odyssey into the Ori galaxy, they journeyed to Celestis where they excavated the device but they were captured by the Ori soldiers. The device was inactive and they learnt that a special password was necessary to unleash its power. Vala Mal Doran bore witness to Morage Le Fay's hints on what the password was which was "Origin" and managed to unleash it on the Doci. After being subjected to the power of the Ark, the Doci became aware of the deception of Adria and the Ori with the knowledge being transmitted to the other Priors via a subspace link they all shared. This diminished Adria's power and contributed to her defeat.
The Ark was transported back to the Milky Way galaxy where it was used on a Prior at the SGC who transmitted its content to the other Priors in the galaxy. Once this was accomplished, the device was shipped to Area 51 for study despite the objections from Daniel Jackson who felt it was too dangerous to be kept.
Overview
In appearance, the Ark itself appeared as a large box shaped device similar to the Ark of the Covenant. It contained a single dial shaped device on the top with numerous buttons circling a larger red circular button. Once a code word was typed into the device would it be active after which all that was required was hitting the central button. The box could be opened without entering the code but nothing would happen as a result.
Once activated, the Ark of Truth would need to be opened and it lets loose a brilliant bright white ray of light that can reach towards the sky itself. Those exposed to the device are subject to the "truth" that was encoded into it thus making it a manner through which forced indoctrination was possible.
