Biography

Pre-Crisis

Athena was a female goddess of the Olympian Gods. (All-Star Comics v1 #8)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Athena was present at a meeting with her fellow Gods in to talk about the dwindling worshipping from the mortals. After Zeus deemed this issue beneath him and left, Athena led Aphrodite, Ares, Demeter, Hestia, and Hermes to the Underworld where the Cavern of Souls is. The Cavern of Souls is where Gaia has housed the souls of women who have been unjustly killed by men. They harvest the souls where they reincarnate them into Amazons and given a home on Themyscira except for one that Athena had saved for the day when Hippolyta sculpted a baby out of shoreline clay and Athena infused the baby sculpture with that spirit enabling Princess Diana to be born. (Wonder Woman v2 #1)

For millennia, the goddess Athena waited patiently for the chance to prove herself worthy of the crown of Olympus. As Earth society developed, the goddess of knowledge grew in power and cunning, and ultimately challenged her father Zeus for the throne. To win this challenge, Athena sent for her champion, Wonder Woman, to face that of Zeus — Briareos of the Hecatoncheires. Though she was still blind, Diana was aided by the winged Pegasus but seemingly fell to Briareos. Unknown to Zeus, this was a trick played by Athena and Diana to prove to the latter that Zeus had no compassion and was not a worthy ruler. Athena agreed to forfeit if Zeus would spare Diana's life, but he denied her, proving his unworthiness. This prompted the other goddesses to deliver the head of Medusa unto Diana, which she used to turn Briareos to stone. Athena took the throne at last, but Zeus immediately began plotting a coup with his brothers in Tartarus. (Wonder Woman v2 #13) Athena immediately set Diana on a quest into Hades' realm to free the god Hermes. She descended beneath Doom's Doorway with Wonder Girl Cassandra Sandsmark and Ferdinant the Minotaur and was confronted by Zeus' alliance. Ironically, she might not have succeeded but for the machinations of her constant nemesis, Ares. (Wonder Woman v2 #15)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Athena

She was depicted as humanoid owl where she appeared before Diana telling her that she supported her struggles. (Secret Origins v3 #6)
