Azmodan is a video game character who features in Diablo.

Biography

Azmodan was a member of the race of Demons that spawned in the Burning Hells where he was one of the Lesser Evils that formed from the death of Tathamet.

He came to rise to the position of a prominent battlefield commander where he helped orchestrate a number of victories against the Angels during the Eternal Conflict.

The Lesser Evils then conspired to take over the Burning Hells and rose up against the Prime Evils with their essences being banished to the mortal plane in a time known as the Dark Exile. In the aftermath, Azmodan and Belial came to take control over the Burning Hells with them falling into in-fighting to rule it completely. Thus, the demons became divided amongst these two factions as their masters sought ultimate power.

He appeared in a vision experienced by Leah where he knew her true nature and that the trap that was made for him. However, Azmodan came to be prepared and launched his Army of Sin from the site of the Arreat Crater as part of an invasion into the mortal world. The Lord of Sin desired to acquire the Black Soulstone and consume its power in order to become the Prime Evil.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Azmodan was a corpulent demon who walked on six insect-like legs where his torso was decorated with treasures and trophies. His face featured a large glowing mouth filled with dagger-like teeth and a forged tongue whilst he had four glowing eyes. On his back, he had two large-horned shaped appendages that extended from his shoulders. Among the hierarchy of Hell, Azmodan was known as the Lord of Sin and was noted as being one of a Lord of the Burning Hells.

It was noted that his cunning was beyond imagining.

He was shown as being ambitious and with a desire for greater power that led to him wanting to become the Prime Evil.

Azmodan was noted to had despised the Nephalem where he considering them to be creation's greatest sin.

It was known that he had a consort amongst his servants with this being Cydaea the Mistress of Lust.

Powers and abilities

Azmodan was one of the Lesser Evils which made him a powerful demon and a lord of the Burning Hells.

According to the Valrous manuscript, Azmodan was noted for being the best battlefield commander of all demons. Under his command, the Burning Hells had defeated the angels many times in the Eternal Conflict across Pandemonium and against the Prime Evils during the demonic civil war.

He was able to summon a Demon Gate allowing him to bring forth his servants to attack his enemies. Azmodan was capable of unleashing a giant fireball called the Globe of Annihilation that was able to track his enemies and exploded on contact.

Amongst his closest followers were his Sin Lieutenants who were each demons that represented one of the seven vices and included:

  • Cydaea : Maiden of Lust
  • Ghom : Lord of Gluttony
  • Vidian : Lord of Envy

It was noted that he ruled the ravening hordes of the Burning Hells for over three centuries. Within the Burning Hells, he came to rule over his own domain that was known as the Realm of Sin. According to the Scrolls of Malzakam, it was the most densely populated region of all the realms of the Burning Hells. It was a warped area of myriad sins of both great joy and despair where garnish perversions were said to be indulged to the extreme. In his realm, there existed large beating hearts known as the Sin Hearts that were filled with vile power and could be used to empower entire demonic hosts thus enhancing their effectiveness. Azmodan was able to have these dredged from his realm and brought into the mortal world to increase the strength of his armies.

  • On BlizzCon 2018, senior designer Matthew Berger during the Diablo Immortal World and Q&A Panel Transcript wrote, "Azmodan. Belial. Never content with their place in Hell. Always reaching for more, always wanting more power."
