Beast People

The Beast People (also called the Beast Men and the Beast Folk) were the creations of Dr. Moreau, the results of his experiments to turn animals into human beings through vivisection. Physically, most of them more or less resembled primitive humans but with subtle physical traits of their former, bestial forms. Intellectually, they were capable of sentient thought, speech and problem-solving skills, some moreso than others. They lived in a primitive society on the island, with the "Sayer of the Law" as their unofficial leader.

To keep them docile, none of them, not even the ones who had originally been carnivorous animals, were allowed to eat meat, and they were made to adhere to a strict set of rules.

Their evolved forms were only temporary. After a time, what Moreau referred to as "the stubborn beast flesh" would begin to "creep back." They would slowly regress back into animals both mentally and physically. As a result, Moreau would have to take them back into his laboratory and re-perform his surgical procedures on them to maintain their human shape. Being experimented on was also a form of punishment for Beast Men who broke the Law. As a result, Moreau's lab became known to them as "the House of Pain."

When Moreau was killed, and Montgomery shortly afterward, the Beast Men fully regressed into bestial creatures governed only by instinct. Some were killed by Edward Prendick in his fight for survival, but there were still many living on the island at the time of his escape in 1888. What became of them is not known.

When the Scorpion visited the island in 1891, to investigate Prendick's story, they found no Beast Mean. Either they died out, killed one another, or, more likely, fully regressed into ordinary animals with no physical traces of Moreau's experiments upon them.
