History

Biotics was a term given to those people who as a result of exposure to Element zero gained the ability to manipulate Mass Effect fields.

During the 2150's, a series of starship accidents led to element zero being dispersed over populated areas. A consequence of this was the birth of the first human biotics though their abilities were not recognized right away. The first known human biotic was a female designated Subject White who had a subsequently violent history. By the time these children were teenagers, the Alliance had made contact with the Citadel and learned of the effects of in-utero eezo exposure. A company called Conatix Industries was founded to track down exposed individuals and develop implants for humans. There are rumours that, after the link between eezo and biotics was discovered, some human colonies were deliberately exposed to dust-form element zero to create more biotic children. In 2160, Conatix established the BAaT (Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training) programme on Jump Zero to train its first generation of biotics. Since the Alliance knew very little about this process, it covertly hired turian mercenaries as instructors, but when one of these instructors, Commander Vyrnnus, was killed in an altercation with a student leading to the BAaT being shut down as a result. Records pertaining to the program would remain classified. The Alliance has had considerably greater success with later training projects. Human biotics would have some oversight from the Alliance Parliamentary Subcommittee for Transhuman Studies.

Overview

In appearance, Biotics was an ability of rare few individuals to manipulate dark energy and create mass effect fields through the use of electrical impulses from the brain. Powerful mass effect fields for practical use could be achieved through intense training and surgically-implanted amplifiers. The strength of a biotic user's abilities was relative with it varying greatly between species and individuals. It was the result of in-utero exposure of an organic being to element zero though there were risks involved as this could result in fatal cancers and in rarer cases could coalesce into nodules within the fetus's developing nervous system.

It was noted that there were three different branches of biotics including; Telekinesis that allowed mass-lowering fields to levitate or impel objects, Kinetic Fields that rose mass that could be used to block or pin objects and Distortion whereby rapidly shifting mass fields caused an object to be shred to pieces.

All asari are naturally biotic to some degree, though not all choose to develop their abilities. Those who do pursue training usually display formidable ability. They do not require implants to use biotics effectively, nor do they need to undergo special training to acquire conscious neural control; their reproductive physiology grants them this ability from birth. Biotic ability is mandatory for asari who want to go into military service. The most powerful train as asari commandos.

Some unstable human biotics have turned their back on the galactic community for their own reasons. Many L2s, frustrated by extreme abuse endured during their training, chronic and severe health problems caused by their implants, social ostracism, and political indifference, have become alienated from the Alliance and human society in general. This has motivated some radical human biotics to band together and take militant action. Others are drawn to prominent figures who champion their cause or join communes, some of which have devolved into cults. A few of the most extreme fanatics believe biotics were the 'evolution of humanity' and that their talents make them innately superior to other humans.
