History

Black Air was an intelligence agency established in Britain that had replaced the former Weird Happenings Organization which had been disbanded. (Excalibur v1 #86)

The British government experienced overtures from Genosha who had experienced a societal upheaval when the Mutate slave class had been freed after a civil war. However, it was discovered from the diplomatic channels that it caused the Genoshan economy to collapse where hostilities had risen between the human and Mutate classes with each blaming the other for events. Thus, Black Air approached the European branch of X-Men that was known as Excalibur about journeying to Genosha to help defuse the situation. (Excalibur v1 #86)

Following that mission, Wisdom takes Excalibur member Kitty Pryde with him to investigate the death of an old friend, ultimately leading him to "Dream Nails", a codenamed Black Air facility which had dealt with xenobiological specimens, such as a race known as the Uncreated. These creatures had been experimented on within the facility to create Blood Eagle, a psychoactive virus that would consume the flesh of the host if they experienced any stressful emotion. Ultimately, Wisdom and Pryde destroy the Dream Nails facility. (Excalibur v1 #90)

Soon after this, several Black Air agents showed up in County Mayo, Ireland, to investigate the disappearance of Cassidy Keep and encountered members of Generation X. (Generation X v1 #8)

Black Air survive this loss of political and actual power, albeit in a much-reduced manner, operating only through a handful of splinter cells. One of these cells sends Sari St. Hubbins, a contract killer, to kill her former lover Peter Wisdom; simultaneously, they are responsible for the kidnapping and sale to extraterrestrials of Nightcrawler. (Excalibur v1 #114)

Though seemingly disbanded, Project Black Air came to be reformed and be a part of MI-13. Pete Wisdom came to be a secret agent working as part of Black Air where he was deployed under orders from the Queen to locate the new Captain Britain who was Betsy Braddock. This was during the crisis that formed following the formation of the Mutant nation of Krakoa and the conflict it found itself against Morgan le Fay's Otherworld. (Excalibur v4 #3)
