Biography
Black Zetsu (Japanese: 黒ゼツ, Hepburn: Kuro Zetsu) was born during the desperate final moments of the prehistoric battle between Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and her twin sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, just as the brothers prepared to seal their mother away forever using the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei. In an ultimate act of defiance and foresight, Kaguya concentrated a portion of her immense will and chakra, physically manifesting it as a sentient, ink-like shadow that she cast out into the world seconds before her imprisonment. This dark entity was created with the singular, absolute purpose of facilitating Kaguya's eventual resurrection, serving as a living fail-safe that could operate independently of her sealed body. Emerging as a formless, parasitic extension of the Rabbit Goddess's consciousness, Black Zetsu slunk into the darkness of the primitive elemental nations, possessing no true biological heart or soul but carrying the entirety of Kaguya’s memories and her cold, manipulative essence. He spent his earliest days as a ghost-like observer, hidden from the eyes of the Sage of Six Paths, as he calculated how to exploit the burgeoning conflict between the Sage’s two sons, Indra and Asura, to begin the long, centuries-spanning process of unravelling the seal that held his creator captive.
Following his emergence from the shadows of his mother’s seal, Black Zetsu turned his attention toward the burgeoning rift between the Sage of Six Paths’ two sons, Indra and Asura Ōtsutsuki. Recognizing that the eldest brother, Indra, possessed a volatile combination of genius and latent resentment after being passed over for the leadership of Ninshū, the dark entity began to whisper in the young man's ear, stoking his arrogance and his growing hatred for his younger brother. By manipulating Indra’s descent into darkness, Black Zetsu successfully instigated the first great conflict of the shinobi era, setting in motion a transmigratory cycle of violence that would plague their descendants for centuries. During this era, the entity committed his most critical act of sabotage by physically altering the Uchiha Stone Tablet, a sacred relic left behind by Hagoromo to guide his children. Using his unique abilities to rewrite the ancient script, Black Zetsu deceptively framed the Infinite Tsukuyomi—the very ritual Kaguya had used to harvest chakra—as the ultimate path to world peace and the salvation of the Uchiha clan. This calculated lie ensured that any Uchiha powerful enough to awaken the Rinnegan would unknowingly work toward the revival of the Rabbit Goddess, effectively turning the clan's greatest warriors into his unwitting pawns.
Sometime between Madara's death in his battle with Hashirama and the time delayed Izanagi Madara used to resurrect himself, Black Zetsu found out where Madara's body was hidden and hid itself inside Madara's body. When Madara had seemingly created White Zetsu and its clone siblings, it was actually Black Zetsu pulling the transformed humans from Kaguya's Infinite Tsukuyomi out of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, merging them with the essence of the Hashirama plant clone Madara created to give them a diluted Wood Release. When Madara was on the verge of death, he believed he had created Black Zetsu by imbuing his will into half of White Zetsu, and that the complete Zetsu was partially his clone. In reality, it was Black Zetsu coming out of Madara's body after hiding inside of his body during his death. Zetsu later accompanied Obito Uchiha to Amegakure to locate Nagato, who had unknowingly been given Madara's Rinnegan as a child, and watched as Obito introduced himself as Madara Uchiha.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Black Zetsu was a shapeshifting, completely pitch-black humanoid figure that lacked hair, skin texture, or any visible bodily orifices. His features were defined solely by two glowing, pupil-less yellow eyes and an occasional mouth lined with sharp, jagged teeth. Because he required a host to function comfortably, he spent most of his criminal operational history fused with White Zetsu, acting as the left half of a single, dual-personality entity. In this merged state, his half of the body was encased inside a massive, green flytrap-like extension that emerged from his hips and could close completely over his head. When combat or infiltration required it, Black Zetsu could detach entirely from his plant-like counterpart, stretching out his form into an organic, liquid-like black puddle that could flow across surfaces or coat the bodies of others like a living shadow.
Powers and abilities
Black Zetsu possessed a unique array of stealth, sensory, and parasitic capabilities that allowed him to manipulate history without ever engaging in direct warfare. His signature technique was Mayfly, a sensory-nullifying ability that allowed him to merge seamlessly with the earth, tree roots, and rock formations to travel globally at high speeds while remaining completely undetectable.
His primary offensive trait was his parasitic body-coating ability, which allowed his liquid form to forcefully attach to and control powerful shinobi—such as Obito Uchiha—by overriding their motor functions, absorbing their chakra, and hijacking their unique visual dōjutsu.
Furthermore, he possessed an innate mastery of Yin–Yang Release, which granted him total immunity to conventional sensory techniques, absolute biological immortality, and the power to rewrite historical inscriptions like Hagoromo's stone tablet to deceive generations of ninja.
