Biography
Kaguya Ōtsutsuki (Japanese: 大筒木カグヤ, Hepburn: Ōtsutsuki Kaguya) was an ancient female being who was a member of the Ōtsutsuki Clan (大筒木一族, Ōtsutsuki Ichizoku). A millennia ago, she came to Earth alongside Isshiki Ōtsutsuki in search for the fruit of the God Tree (神樹, Shinju, English TV: Divine Tree) where she was supposed to return its chakra to the clan's main family on another world. On Earth, she was found by the people that resided in the Land of Ancestors (祖の国, So no Kuni) with her being brought before the nation's emperor Tenji (テンジ, Tenji). Kaguya identified herself as the God Tree's guardian and wiped the memories of the encounter with her from the emperor's mind. Afterwards, she decided to settle among the people of this land and she came to be regarded as the concubine of the emperor. During this time, she grew closer to the emperor where she came to fall pregnant. However, the Land of Ancestors was threatened with war from the rival kingdom of the Land of That (彼の国, Ka no Kuni) that erupted over a border dispute. Emperor Tenji attempted to prevent an outbreak of conflict and declared that anyone that attacked their enemy's represented was to be considered a criminal and punished with execution. Despite this proclamation, Kaguya came to threaten the Land of That's representatives and thus she broke the emperor's edict leading to the order to execute her. As a result, she along with her assistant Aino (アイノ, Aino) had to go on the run from the Land of Ancestors with them being hunted down. This led to her losing faith in humanity though she still had a desire for peace. Kaguya came to decide to claim god-like power in an effort to end conflict among humanity. Thus, she defied her clan’s taboo against harvesting the fruit from the God Tree for herself and consumed it. This awakened her Rinne Sharingan and became endowed with the power of chakra. The awakening of these powers allowed her to single-handedly end the wars and eventually control the nations. This caused her to be worshipped as the Rabbit Goddess and received the blessing from the people. However, she came to fear the rest of her clan and thus she decided to use the Infinite Tsukuyomi in order to transform humans into an army of White Zetsu. This force was to be used to protect her chakra from being stolen by her clansmen. According to one account, Kaguya did not want mankind to perish and thus freed some of the victims of the genjutsu with their memories being erased.
She later came to give birth to twin sons named Hagoromo Otsutsuki and Hamura Otsutsuki with the pair being the first people that were born with chakra. During this time, Kaguya found herself ruling the lands by herself and often resorted to cruelty with her acts being regarded with fear, awe and reverence among mankind. The Rabbit Goddess then came to be regarded as a demon with Kaguya's own desire being driven entirely by her need to possess all chakra. Thus, she turned against her own children as she devised a plan to absorb their innate chakra and to accomplish this she merged herself with the God Tree to become the Ten-Tails with her sons being forced to challenge her in battle. Her sons were unaware that the giant beast was their mother and instead assumed the Ten-Tails to be an incarnation of the God Tree that was attempting to recover its stolen fruit. Thus, Hagoromo and Hamura battled the creature where they used the Chibaku Tensei to turn the beast's husk into the core of Six Paths thus creating the Moon. In the aftermath, Hamura took over leadership of the Ōtsutsuki clan and departed for the Moon in order to guard the remains of the Ten-Tails. Meanwhile, Hagoromo remained behind on Earth to spread chakra among humanity and teach them the arts of ninshu. Unknown to the twin sons, Kaguya's will came to manifest into an artificial being known as Black Zetsu who looked to revive his 'mother'. Working under this agenda, Black Zetsu manipulated Hagoromo's eldest son Indra and his descendants within the Uchiha clan along with his brother's descendants within the Senju clan in an attempt to get one of them to awaken the Rinnegan and break the seal. Many years later, Madara Uchiha came to succeed in obtaining the Rinnegan, and Black Zetsu began secretly manipulating world events to have Kaguya revived. Manipulating Madara, he secretly was responsible for using the Akatsuki in order to accomplish his own goals.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Infinite Tsukuyomi was cast by Madara Uchiha where he proclaimed himself as the Saviour of the World. It was then that Black Zetsu impaled the elder Uchiha in the chest with the left hand of Obito Uchiha whose body Black Zetsu had taken control of following an earlier battle. Madara was left shocked and horrified, remarking that Black Zetsu was his will with Black Zetsu berating Madara before Black Zetsu also revealed that his will was that of Kaguya's much to Madara's horror. Black Zetsu then began covering Madara's body with his own malleable mass. As Sasuke Uchiha and Naruto Uzumaki attempted to intervene to stop the revival from going ahead, they were captured by hair-like appendages while Madara's body continued to expand, growing off of enormous reserves of chakra from the victims of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. His body grew until Black Zetsu's mass completely engulfed him, thereby completing Kaguya's revival who now stood in Madara's place and resulted in Kaguya having been successfully brought back into the modern ninja world. She looked on at the surroundings and, upon noticing Naruto and Sasuke and, more important, the marks on their hands before the hair-like appendages, now made up of her actual hair, threw them back to the ground. She activated her Byakugan, noticing that the two youths had similar chakra to her sons and Hagoromo's children, before coming to the conclusion that Hagoromo had bestowed his powers to them. Kakashi asked her about her motives, which led her to state that the world was her nursery and as such, she wanted no more fighting to damage it any further. She then teleported Team 7 and Obito Uchiha into an active volcano, telling them that she would have them disappear.
However, all five of them managed to avoid death. Seeing this, Kaguya struck them once again with her hair, this time aiming with her Byakugan and firing needle-like strands at Sasuke, who was saved by Naruto whom had just discovered his ability to fly. Noticing this, and Naruto's power resembling that of her son, Kaguya grew enraged and clashed with Naruto while declaring all the chakra in the world should once again be hers. As she knocked Naruto back, Sasuke appeared above her and attempted to strike her with his Susanoo's sword. The assault left Kaguya unscathed and she was able to rebuff Sasuke sending him reeling to where he almost fell into the lava, before teleporting behind Naruto and using one of his Truth-Seeking Balls as a platform for safety. Kaguya immediately entered a dimensional void and transported herself behind the duo, noticeably crying due to the resemblance they held to her own children, before forcing Black Zetsu over their bodies. Black Zetsu then began to tell the two youths the truth about past events, things that even Hagoromo was unaware of. He told them that Hagoromo and Hamura once sealed Kaguya using the same powers that Sasuke and Naruto inherited and that he had been manipulating the descendants of Indra and Asura for presumably all of time, attempting to get an Uchiha to awaken the Rinnegan and activate the Infinite Tsukuyomi so that the Ten-Tails — and subsequently, his mother, Kaguya — would be revived.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Kaguya Otsutsuki was a pale-skinned humanoid woman with delicate facial features who had extremely long, sweeping white, possessed white clear eyes and her eyebrows were cut very short and round which were a symbol of nobility with her also wearing a red shape of lipstick. She came to be revered as the Rabbit Goddess (卯の女神, Usagi no Megami) and feared as a Demon (鬼, Oni). Her actions led to her being regarded as the Progenitor of Chakra (チャクラの祖, Chakura no So) and her power led to humans referring to her as God Almighty (全能の神, Zennō no Kami).
Typically, it was shown that she did not openly display any emotion. She had a degree of affection as she cared very deeply about the Earth viewing it as a nursery that she does not want humanity itself to damage any further.
It was said by her son Hagoromo that Kaguya was once truly a good and caring person. Black Zetsu had said that she had tried to love humans in an attempt to foster peace. However, her distrust in them proved far too great as she came to believe all they did was fight and destroy the world. After losing faith in humanity, Kaguya opted to use her great and terrible power to submit everyone to her will. As Hagoromo noted, humanity around that time began to fear her as a demon.
After eating the chakra fruit, Kaguya was shown to had grown into being despot that developed both a god-complex and messiah-complex. She came to believe that all chakra rightfully belonged to her alone and that only she could protect and unite the world.
She would fall in love with a human upon arriving to the world though he would be killed after the enacting of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. However, she was pregnant with children by this point where she gave birth to two sons who she named Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki (大筒木ハゴロモ, Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo) and Hamura Ōtsutsuki (大筒木ハムラ, Ōtsutsuki Hamura). She deeply loved her sons but in an effort to protect them she hid many secrets from them.
Her will came to be manifested in a black shadowy entity called Black Zetsu (黒ゼツ, Kuro Zetsu) who referred to Kaguya as his 'mother'.
Powers and abilities
As a member of the Otsutsuki Clan, Kaguya Otsutsuki possessed a range of superhuman abilities that were far beyond that of an ordinary human being. These included travelling through space, causing people to fall asleep, hypnotise others, erase memories and even unleash powerful shockwaves from eyes capable of blowing away or maiming people.
Both her eyes were the Byakugan (白眼, literally meaning: White Eye, meaning (Viz): All Seeing White Eye) that granted her a near 360° field of x-ray vision and the ability to see the chakra pathway system. She also possessed a Rinne Sharingan (輪廻写輪眼, literally meaning: Saṃsāra Copy Wheel Eye) as a third eye on her forehead that was red in colour and contained several concentric circles along with nine tomoe. This third eye granted her the powers of the Sharingan's such as seeing the flow of chakra, casting and easily recognising genjutsu, heightened powers of perception, among the other abilities it held. It also allowed Kaguya to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi (無限月読, Mugen Tsukuyomi) that she could place on specific individuals.
After eating the God Tree's fruit, she gained unparalleled chakra reserves and strength. In this state, she could absorb any jutsu she encountered and used against her. Her bloodline meant that she was knowledgeable of an advanced branch of jutsu called Kekkei Mōra (血継網羅, literally meaning: Bloodline Encompassing).
As an Otsutsuki, she was capable of casting various jutsu and did not need to use hand signs to cast them. Kaguya was able to harden her bones through the All-Killing Ash Bones (共殺の灰骨, Tomogoroshi no Haikotsu) technique. She was then able to weaponise these projectiles from her back and hands. When striking a victim, it caused a body to disintegrate into a pile of ash thus killing her foe.
Among the techniques known to her included:
- Rabbit Hair Needle 兎毛針, Togebari) :
- All-Killing Ash Bones (共殺の灰骨, Tomogoroshi no Haikotsu) :
- Yomotsu Hirasaka (黄泉比良坂, Yomotsu Hirasaka) :
- Amenominaka (天之御中, Amenominaka) :
- God: Nativity of a World of Trees (神・樹界降誕, Shin: Jukai Kōtan) :
- Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack (八十神空撃, Yasogami Kūgeki) : using her mastery of chakra, Kaguya gathers it in her palms and can then manifest it around her arms to enhance her attacks[2] or into a sequence of countless fists in the air. This technique can be used both offensively and defensively. Combined with her Byakugan, this ability has the potential to wreak havoc on the battlefield and is considered the strongest offensive ability. Not only was it strong enough to cause massive shock-waves upon impact, but even destroy a Six Paths Chakra Complete Body — Susanoo easily. The speed of this attack leaves no room for her target to escape.
- Expansive Truth-Seeking Ball (膨張求道玉, Bōchō Gudōdama) :
- Infinite Tsukuyomi (無限月読, Mugen Tsukuyomi) :
By combining with the God Tree, she could trigger a transformation into the Ten-Tails (十尾, Jūbi). At some points, she could suffer mutating into an unstable, rabbit-esque version of the Ten-Tails. Black Zetsu noted that the transformation was not humanoid and did not happen intentionally. During such mutations, she needed to absorb chakra from victims.
She was noted for being a member of the Ōtsutsuki Clan (大筒木一族, Ōtsutsuki Ichizoku).
