Biography

Origin

Donald Blake on the right in Journey into Mystery v1 #84.

Donald Blake was a blonde haired male human who in reality was a creation of the All-Father Odin. He was created when the Asgardian had grown angry at his son Thor Odinson's reckless actions in the realms of Asgard. Thus, as punishment, he decided to scatter the essence of Thor and place it within a human host that was Donald Blake in an effort to teach him humility. As such, Blake was formed by Odin's power where he manifested at the State College of Medicine where enchantments made it seem that he was always human and that he never knew his true nature. In that time, he was directed to the registrar's office in order to begin a career as a surgeon. (Thor v1 #159)

Dr. Blake was exploring a coastal area where fishermen described the arrival of a strange race that were the Stone Men of Saturn. He came to find the alien invaders who saw his arrival and chased after him with Donald escaping into nearby caves. Trapped inside, he came to find a secret chamber where he found a gnarled wooden stick which he initially attempted to use for leverage to move a boulder that blocked the exit. Striking the hammer on the rock then caused a startling transforming as Donald Blake was transformed into the mighty Thor with the cane taking the form of the hammer Mjolnir. (Journey into Mystery v1 #83)

He eventually decided to reveal his other identity of Thor to Jane but failed to do so. Instead, he decided to do so as Thor who petitioned the All-Father to marry Foster but Odin refused. After the battle with the Lava Man, Donald returned to his office only to find that Jane was leaving the practice to work with Dr. Bruce Andrews as she had long desired to hear Blake claim his love for her. However, he did not do so and she became more distraught that Dr. Blake did not check on her safety during Thor's fight with the Lava Man. As a result, she concluded that Donald Blake did not care for her and left to work with Dr. Andrews. (Journey into Mystery v1 #97)

Thor came to have no memory of his past life as an Asgardian god though over the months more of his memories came to return to him. Several years later, Odin revealed to him the false nature of the Blake identity and the reason for it. (Thor v1 #159)

Later on, Thor gave up on the identity of Donald Blake where with the aid of Nick Fury the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. he came to adopt a new secret identity as a construction worker named Sigurd Jarlson. (Thor v1 #341)

Thor

Dr. Blake in Thor v1 #153.

After Ragnarok, Thor Odinson was adrift in the Void where he prepared himself for his own demise when he encountered Blake who claimed to hold some experience about the void and urged Thor to live on. Following that, Donald Blake was shown to be in the town of Oklahoma where once more he became host to the power of Thor by striking his wooden stick to the ground. (Thor v3 #1)

He awoke in a bed in Midgard with Amora the Enchantress by his side where she offered him a Golden Apple which Blake took after learning that Thor took them. This began the process of dei-forming as it began to transform his body as per her wishes. The process was incredibly painful for him with Donald begging Amora to spare him the pain but she said it was the price paid to become a god. She then chopped off his head as his body was reforming to create a new god that would serve the Enchantress. (Mighty Thor v1 #14) The still living Blake's head could watch helplessly as his body was reformed into Amora's servant who she called the Keep with the mortal stating that this was no dream but a nightmare. (Mighty Thor v1 #15) The Keep was later armed as the Enchantress decided to make her way to Asgardia with the head of Donald Blake being forced to accompany them. This saw them journey to Hel where they freed Hela from the grips of one of the Mares that had placed her in a nightmare. She then allowed them to travel through the portal from Hel to Asgardia where they found all the Asgardians in the Marefolk-induced slumber but were confronted by Thor in the royal spire after he had been freed by the All-Mother. (Mighty Thor v1 #16) The two battled with Thor being shocked at seeing Donald Blake's return where the two had an argument over their shared existence. Ultimately, the All-Mother came to awaken with Thor then removing the Enchantress and the Keep from Asgardia. Meanwhile, Thor feeling responsible for Blake saw a means of giving him a peaceful life along with a solution to the problem with the Mares. Thus, he gave the Mares the head of Blake whose dreams came to fuel their existence and sustain them where he dreamed an idyllic life that was a paradise to him. (Mighty Thor v1 #17)

Shadow of Thunder

Eventually, this realm was visited by the Midgard Serpent after Thor came to be King of Asgard thus leading to a weakening in the Odin-Force. The great serpentine dragon had long sought entry into this kingdom and revealed to Blake the true origins of his existence and that he had simply been a pawn of Odin. The revelation broke Donald Blake's mind and the Midgard Serpent sought to turn the human to his cause by offering some of his power where together they could destroy Asgard. The dragon's power merged with some of the Odin-power within himself and he became mad as a result where he turned on the Midgard Serpent by slitting his throat as well as using his hide to fashion an armour. (Thor v6 #10) He then set forth to murder all the inhabitants of the realm that had been created for him. (Thor v6 #9)

Later on, Thor came to experience a weakening in the enchantment around his hammer and was reminded of the time when he shared a body with Donald Blake. He believed that perhaps switching with Blake once again would allow him to enter into the elder-sleep where he could consult the spirits of the old kings of Asgard and seek their advice. To accomplish this, he asked his brother Loki to perform the ritual allowing for Blake to switch with Thor after so many years. Upon arriving, the crazed Blake then immediately attacked Loki and wounded him whereupon he snapped his walking stick as he had no intention of returning to the other world again thus trapping Thor in that land. (Thor v6 #9) Making his way into Asgard, he ripped the pages of the Book of Kings and inspected the armoury when he was confronted by the Asgardians. With his newfound power, Blake was easily capable of besting them and use his skills as a surgeon to leave them all critically injured. He then took the sword of the Bifrost guardian Sif and opened a doorway to Dimension Blood where he banished the Asgardians to that far off realm. Donald Blake then decided to shave and appear as he once used to be where he sought out Jane Foster. (Thor v6 #10) He then proceeded to have dinner with her as the two caught up where he hid the nature of his recent return. In this time, he inquired about the whereabouts of Odin as he could not find him with Jane revealing that she was on bad terms with the All-Father during her time as Thor. This surprised Blake who was unaware of this development and left their meal as he decided to end the lineage of Thor. He began by targeting Red Norvell and killing him leaving his body mutilated where it was sent to the morgue with Jane finding the remains. Blake then proceeded for another person empowered by the magic of Thor which was Throg the frog of thunder where the two were engaged in battle. (Thor v6 #11) At first, Blake was defeated by the frog of thunder who alongside Lockjaw decided to take their captive to Doctor Strange. However, this proved to be a trick as Blake awoke in the Sanctum Sanctorum and overpowered the heroes present. Knocking aside Throg and Lockjaw, he turned his attention to Doctor Strange where he sensed that traces Odin-Magic were present within him which stemmed from his attaining some of the power of the World Tree. This caused Blake to decide to target the source of this magic which was Yggdrasil itself where he began cutting down the World Tree in an attempt to destroy it. (Thor v6 #12) Cutting into the tree, he was stopped by the arrival of Throg who was joined by the freed Asgardians after a portal was created for them back to Midgard by Doctor Strange and Loki. Blake was ready to battle them when he was blindsided by the recently returned Odin looking to rectify his mistake. At first, Donald was ready for his battle and attempt at revenge against his creator with Odin looking to use his magic to un-make Blake. However, they were interrupted by the Destroyer who was animated by Thor through his ravens carving his sigil on the mighty war armour allowing his soul to operate it even whilst his body was trapped within the World of Blake dimension. (Thor v6 #13) He then fought against Thor who despite Blake's' new power was unable to defeat him with the Odinson later being able to return to Midgard. Donald then looked to end his painful existence and die but Thor refused to kill him as he saw Blake as a brother. Despite that, he could not overlook his crimes and decided that he needed to be punished with Loki accomplishing this by putting Donald Blake on the Isle of Silence to experience a serpent's venom constantly stinging his eyes as he was named the new god of lies. (Thor v6 #14)

Overview

Personality and attributes

As a result of his origins, he came to be known as the Shadow of Thunder. After killing the Midgard Serpent, he came to be referred to as the Slayer of the Great Serpent. (Thor v6 #13) This led to him assuming the mantle of the Midgard Serpent resulting in him being known as the Dragon. Following his defeat, he came to be crowned as the new God of Lies by Thor. (Thor v6 #14)

It was said that he had been driven mad by the revelations of his origins and the power he attained leading to him becoming the dragon that replaced the Midgard Serpent. (Thor v6 #10)

Powers and abilities

Though seemingly human, Blake was actually a creation of the All-Father Odin's magic with enchantments weaving him into existence with memories of his life. (Thor v1 #159) He possessed an element of the Odin-power within him that was a result of the mystical means of his creation. (Thor v6 #10) Ordinarily, he had the abilities of an ordinary human being though one with a lame leg that restricted his mobility. However, he could trigger a transformation with a gnarled cane striking the ground which turned him into the Asgardian Thor Odinson. (Journey into Mystery v1 #83) Meanwhile, as a human, Blake came to be considered one of the best doctors and surgeons in the country. (Thor v1 #159)

At one point, his body was transformed by the Enchantress to create a new god-like being called the Keep. He was said to be a golem that had been created by Amora using sorcery who in addition to his great strength could also regenerate from any wounds to his body. (Mighty Thor v1 #17)

It was shown that he had the power of to absorb Odin-magic from Asgardian sources. (Thor v6 #9) Blake came to be offered the power of the Midgard Serpent and gained an element of the dragon's power. However, he forcibly came to take the rest of it and slit the creature's throat whereupon he used its hide to fashion armour for himself. (Thor v6 #10)

When switching with Thor, Blake was transported to an eternal unchanging un-place created by Odin. This was known as the kingdom of Donald Blake where it resembled a small town of peace and tranquillity where it was always sunny with the people always being friendly. Everyone greeted him in the endless summerland and when Thor switched places with him he had no memory of the time that had passed. This world was buried deep within the bowels of the World Tree itself where it was guarded and hidden by deep as well as unbreakable magics forged in the fire of Odin's own will. (Thor v6 #9)
