Biography

Boromir was a native of Gondor, and the eldest son and heir of Denethor, the Steward of Minas Tirith. He was likely named after an ancestor, also named Boromir, who was the eleventh steward of Gondor and personally battled the first Uruk-Hai. When Sauron's forces began moving again, Boromir journeyed to Rivendell to take part in the Council of Elrond. At the Council it was debated what would be done with the One Ring. Boromir felt that the Ring was a gift, and that it should be used as a weapon against Sauron. His counsel was dismissed, as the One Ring was Sauron's Ring, and could not be used as an instrument of good for long.

Boromir joined the Fellowship on a journey to take the Ring into Mordor, and destroy it at Mount Doom. Throughout the journey, he was constantly at odds with both Gandalf and Aragorn on plans of action, and all the while, he was being tempted by the Ring.

After leaving Lothlorien, it was debated what their next destination should be- Gondor, which was under siege from Sauron's forces, or Mordor itself. While Frodo Baggins was pondering his next move, Boromir tried to convince him to come to Gondor with him, so that the Ring could be used to defeat the armies of Mordor. Then, Boromir suggested, he could use the Ring to destroy Sauron. When Frodo declined, Boromir tried to take the Ring from him by force in a fit of madness. Frodo donned the Ring and disappeared. The Fellowship went looking for him, and Aragorn ordered Boromir to protect Merry and Pippen from the attacking Uruk-Hai in the service of Saruman. The two hobbits were ambushed by orcs, and Boromir tried to protect them, but he was killed. Before he died, he confessed to Aragorn that he tried to take the Ring from Frodo. His body was placed in a boat and eventually found its way to Gondor.
